Then I feel sorry for you when the vote goes against what you want to play, because... you know... there is no "I" in "TEAM". Be selfless, not selfish.
Well, if we're resorting to corny coach sayings, "it doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's about having fun."

My argument is that the majority of people, regardless of team, should be playing something they like, even if it doesn't necessarily maximize total team points.

I don't expect everybody (anybody?) to agree.

If I vote for a game and it loses because it's unpopular, that's fine. But if it's actually the game most people want to play, and it loses because of vote engineering, that doesn't seem quite right. So that's why I think people should just vote for what they want, and let the chips fall as they may.

Actually, I think I like Rob's method the best.

And like I said before, it's probably different if you're on a team with a fighting chance. We started off dead last and have had limited team participation due to technincal issues, so that killed off a lot of competitive spirit.

I understand your point, but even if I was on a team that had little to no chance of winning, I'd still be voting with my team's interests in mind. Just because your team isn't in the top half of the Team Rankings doesn't mean you all can't work together to maximise your Individual Rankings, does it?

It's the end of the tournament now, so it doesn't really matter anyway, .

It does if the guy carrying your team hates the game you like the most, and the rest of your team doesn't have MAME capabilities. ;)

We actually broke into the top half, but there's no way we could move up more than one slot at this point.

you probably haven't played it enough then. it's a really amazingly fun scoring system when you get used to it.

What's wrong with you Rando? You're doing it wrong.
When you used to post comments like this in the past, it was filled with more bile, vitriol and hate.
I think metrosexuality has made you soft. ^_-

Never mind. Be happy with the team performance, and perhaps think about improvements if you guys decide to join for the next one if and when it happens.

Injured and full of painkillers for real. Writing more articulate insults is difficult, at the moment. Now, i'm very tempted to denounce all of the Progear voters for psychological abuse on my persona. Think of it: "Oh, judge, the pain is unbearable, playing a vertical bullet-curtain shmup with an hori orientation is even worse than watching tv! The horror, the horror!" Damn, i'd win in the US!

Easy for you to say! My doctor stated it clearly: "No fat food, no drinks, no trashy tv, no pr0n, no swearing while watching beetle races, no xeno-socialist meetings, no badly designed games for the rest of the cure!"

I hope i'll make it through the cure

I believe we share a similar mindset. Maybe not identical, but similar.

Icarus wrote:I understand your point, but even if I was on a team that had little to no chance of winning, I'd still be voting with my team's interests in mind.

Imagine for a moment (and I know this'll be tough given your record ;)), if you kept coming in last on your team because the games you wanted to play and were good at, were also the ones no one else on your team had any love for. You know what you want to play and where you could do well, but others on the team keep telling you that what's best for the team is what should be chosen. It's not that big of a stretch to envision that you'd start feeling like your opinion doesn't count for anything, when what's best for everyone else, is repeatedly kicking you in groin results-wise. So now you have a choice... do you still vote for what the rest of the team wants? Or, do you take the chance that others in the competition want to play the same game you do, and cast your vote in hopes of having enough people from the other teams vote similarly and make your game win?

See, I don't feel it's selfish to want to play a particular game and vote for it. What does come off as a bit selfish to me (and this isn't a bash on you personally), is to expect someone to vote for what anyone other than themselves wants to play in a competition like this... regardless of reason. As I said to Rob earlier, I'd rather pick the game I want and have it lose, than pick a game I hate and help it win. I feel that being able to cast your own vote and have it be outvoted when everything's tallied, is a better "team spirit" maker than having to cast a vote you really didn't agree with.

I know this is something you and I will likely not agree on anytime soon. I mean, both sides of this "team voting" discussion can be seen as selfish... depending on where your personal preferences lie of course. You and Rob made your side pretty clear, and I get where you're coming from, even if I don't see eye to eye with it. Hopefully I described mine well enough to be understood too :)

I get your point as well. But that is why namakoteam have always discussed our options prior to casting the team votes, so we can identify what we'd like to play, what the team will do well in, and to resolve any conflicts of opinion before they happen. I can imagine that there might be one or two in the team that have reservations about the selection, but again, with involved discussion prior to the vote, we can try to work on those issues and keep the team functioning at a high level.

The thing with the way namakoteam have voted in the past five weeks is that we've always gone off what the current vote counts are - for example, several of our members preferred Cyvern for Hidden Gems Week (myself included) but since Vasara and Air Gallet were leading the vote counts, it would be unlikely and wasteful of our votes if we had casted them for Cyvern, hoping that there is a slim chance that it would win. So we discussed both options and settled on Air Gallet based on personal preference and team competence with the games. Our votes have always been cast to avoid the game that we would all prefer not to play.

Like I said before, even if you have reservations about a particular game option, it would be best to think with the interests of the team, regardless of where your team stands in the table. At least that way, if you select a game from the vote leaders that your team would do well in, you indirectly give yourself a chance to improve your own standings in the Individual Rankings as well.

And in a tournament of this nature, you should expect to play a few games you hate. I have personally had my issues with the likes of Star Force, Dragon Blaze and Blazing Star, but I put my prejudices for these games aside and still played them with the goal of furthering my team's position.

And now for something completely different...

Glad you cared to post that. :)
I just found out that the changing from (to?) daylight saving time (and apparently GMT changing back to standard) has gotten us European shmuppers 1 hour less time to post scores next Monday a week from now.

Not that it'll matter much, but I have posted some scores in the last hour before closing before. And since closing of the week comes earlier for me, and probably many other Europeans being on GMT+ time, I thought I'd mention it.
