Official: Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits for the DS

Post by Xexyz »

Aside from Nanostray 2, it looks like there are some more shmups to look forward to on the DS. IGN reported that Konami is going to release a 12+ arcade game compilation for the DS, including titles like Time Pilot, Gradius, and Contra. A cool feature that I'm glad they're implimenting is TATE for all the 3:4 arcade games.

The final list of titles is still unknown at this time. I'll be praying for some Salamander, Gradius II, Xexex, and Jackal.

I wouldn't mind seeing a home port of Mr. Goemon. Hyper Sports would be nice too since Track and Field is in and they go together like peanut butter and jelly.

I'm really glad this isn't the same set of games that appeared on the GBA release. Konami is finally doing something fresh, in terms of compilations, and IMO, that's definately a step in the right direction. If this sells well, hopefully it won't be much longer before before they release another compilation that does include games like Ajax, G.I. Joe, etc.

Yea, this looks real good. Features are:

Wireless Multiplayer (via Nintendo Wi-Fi)
DS Remixed Modes (Arranged Versions?)
And of course, Screen Options for vertical or horizontal monitor options.

We're supposedly supposed to get it in March 2007 (U.S.), and I'll be looking out for it.

Meanwhile, it seems that in Japan, the fifteen games have been disclosed (http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos ... J1p3_1.jpg). For those of you not interested in checking the link...

Circus Charlie
Contra
Gradius
Pooyan
Road Fighter
Roc 'n' Rope
Rush 'n' Attack
Scramble
Shao-Lin's Road
Super Basketball
Time Pilot
Track & Field
Tutankham
Twin Bee
Yie-Ar Kung Fu

({sigh} No Ajax after all. But I guess Konami wanted to keep to the particularly early games...Should we pester them for a vol. 2?)

Alright, the list is finally here :)

The inclusion of Twinbee is a definite plus. Never heard of Tutankham, any idea what it is?

Hopefully this compilation sells well enough to get Konami to release a follow up. A shame there are no beat em ups on this one...

Glad to see it's still coming out, I was wondering if it was still a go.

Good lineup + possible arranged modes + online multiplayer = instant purchase.

Hopefully most of the 2P games will be wifi especially Gradius and Twinbee. drools Great addition yet it also makes it all the more strange that they deliberately left out any wireless for the PSP comps.
And of course, Screen Options for vertical or horizontal monitor options.
TATE on DS should make for major wrist cramps. At the moment I cannot think of a system that would be more painful to play in TATE than my DS lite.

Bah, Konami's still giving out early releases...
Besides Contra and Gradius there's nothing else on there that interests me.

You know, as much as I adore my DS I have to agree with this. I can't think of a way to TATE the handheld that would be comfortable for more than 3.78 seconds.

Yeah, at least with the PSP it is doable. Bearing in mind I have yet to play Star Soldier PSP. All the shmups I play in TATE on PSP so far are on Capcom Classics Remixed (which FYI lets you assign shoot/bomb/special to different directions on the analog nub which works very well, a slick option not available in Star Soldier)

That is a cool avatar, btw. Have always wondered what it's from. Looks like an R-9 and a tank.

The lack of Gyruss is unfortunate. I do have the GBA release with it, though, so it's not a huge deal.

Portable Contra and Gradius is enough for me, and Pooyan is a very nice surprise. The rest is gravy.

Thank you! Accutron made it and several others in this thread:

Mine is the Kiwi Berry ship from R-Type Final. It actually IS a cross between the R-9 and a Tank. While it's not the best ship to use if you're playing for score or 1cc, it serves as a cool little diversion from the usual selection of ships.

OK, new preview on the U.S. comp is up on IGN. Twinbee is in (renamed as Rainbow Bell) It sports single cart multiplayer including the option to send scores and replays to your friend's system. Unfortunately as of this time, the NA release has no net play so I will probably import.

Two really cool options include changing game settings by rubbing a picture of the motherboard's dipswitches with the stylus and ability to turn filtering on or off. And of course tons of promo art, flyers, ect.

Anyways, here is the link to the preview, with new screens:

The only comfortable way I can think of playing the DS tate'd is to turn it clockwise, with the d-pad on top, then hold the back of the DS (ignoring face buttons for the most part), and using the R-button to fire with your right thumb. Do you get what I mean? Then you could use the L-button with your left index finger, but that'd be a bit awkward =/ Still, it's the only thing I could think of that didn't have me cringing.

Does the JP version have confirmed net play?

Hmmm. Good question, I just now realized that Spazicon did not post a source for that when he mentioned wifi in his reply above. :?

I'm guessing that the Japanese version doesn't have internet either. The picture of the box at Play-Asia doesn't have the wifi logo. I think some confusion may have been caused by Gamespot's article. They use the word "wifi" liberally to describe the offline wireless features like game sharing and wireless multiplayer.

I'll probably be buying, but to be cautious, I'll probably wait for the reviews or impressions of it first. Then again, the previews sound very promising and pretty much have me wanting it.

Yeah, I have read news stories and reviews before where the writer used "wifi" to mean lan. Annoying. There goes my dream of a meet up thread for Gradius and Twinbee online matches. :(

Oh well, no need to import now.
