Does Tate make you play better?

Post by WarCheese »

Hello all:

I have always wonder whether playing Tate allows me to progress further in DOJ. I have tried it out once, got green colours all over, and gave up. After seeing the "How to Vertical" site, I am keen to try again.

That said, the wondering still remains. Has Tate made you play better?

Cheers.

yes, no doubt.

I just have to put the TV in a decent height, or else I may find myself looking down when the ship is on the bottom of the screen, and this is not much good.

Otherwise, yes, I usually play better on tate

It sorta depends on the game, for me...some verts play pretty well in yoko, all things considered, while others all but require it.

Like Bullet said it depends on the game, I think for me it's just easier to see everything coming at you (but that could be the VGA in addition to the tate).

Games that are designed to be played in a vertical format screen play better in a vertical format screen. Simple.

As for rotating your screen, make sure you do it properly. Degauss the screen by powering it off and allowing it to cool down first (necessary for most tube-based screens), flip it, leave it for a few more minutes to settle, then power back on.

Most modern TVs and monitors have auto-degaussing however (my flatpanel TFT does), which allows you to poweroff, flip, and power back on in one go. ^_-

tate doesnt necessarily make you better.it still depends on your playing time and whatever but if you switch from yoko to tate ONCE you absolutely cant go back because that would definitely make you play worse :P
so if you cant tate your tv then never try it or youre addicted.you can get pretty decent scores on yoko

I voted 'yes' though I would replace 'play better' with 'ENJOY it better'.

Yeah, the experience is simply much more enjoyable. That alone justifies the shift to tate.

Like Plasmo said, it's not gonna give you a huge, instant performance boost, but playing in tate is just more enjoable, especially because some PS2 games only run in true low res in tate (Daioujou, Esprade, Contra).

Since the games are more enjoyable that way, I consequently want to spend more time playing them, so I consequently get better at them. ^^

Also, I think a bigger screen often makes it easier to spot spaces between bullets faster.

Some games will play easier in tate than others. For me, Shiki2 is one of them due to the size of the bullets when in non-tate. It's really hard for me to see them.

I have played almost nothing in Tate, but seeing my mediocre performance and the fact that most Verts are designed initially for Tate, it's highly likely.

On larger displays, TATE hurts more than it helps for me as my eyes have to dart larger distances across the screen and one of my eyes is about 30% slower than the other.

Any display 15inch or less is optimal.

The bigger the play-area is the better. But not over 28" or something ;)

i think TFT's don't need degaussing, you don't even have to turn them off :) well i never turn mine off when rotating it :?

but yeah, sound advice for crt's i leave mine unplugged for 5 mins before rotation and 5 mins after, because i wasn't sure if it should be done before or after

i prefer tate just because my tv is so small 14"

TATE definitely is welcome.
More screen visible and it's true form. Accurate reaction time is the real benefit for me, otherwise in YOKO for most games I'm way too slow on the draw.

Yup. No doubt in my mind about that. You know what else? It makes the game you're playing look even better too. :P

yeah the biggest plus is that tate games mostly look better than in yoko mode.
and its easier to dodge bullets in tate because you have more pixels to choose from :D
however i know one game that even in tate mode still feels like it needs a bigger screen: psyvariar 2, silly tiny bullet distances even on tate mode, i bet no one ever manged to 1cc the game in yoko.

Makes you play better?
I can assume that if you're going to clear a game in yoko, it would be best to practice in yoko.
Vice versa with Tate.

Enjoyment is subjective.

It can be a major improvement in tate mode in terms of gfx. I always thought Radilgy and Galuda looked good enough in yoko but, esp Radilgy, looks super clear in tate. One major niggle I have is that having played these games in yoko, where I get the full width of the play area, sometimes in tate it is impossible to adjust the screen to fit everything in. Even using in-game screen adjust or changing the aspect ratio via the tv, it doesn't always work out and I feel like I'm missing out on hidden ships/bullets lurking at the sides of the screen. One other thing, all my highest scores are in yoko mode, although that's likely because I play 80% of the time in yoko?

Does it make me play better? I'd say yes, simply due to the fact that everything's bigger. Less distraction that way.

Unplugged 5 min. before flipping is all you need to do. Then plug back in after flipping. I've been doing this with my CRT TV for 3 years and it always works. I actually leave the TV on its side most of the time since most of my games are vertical shmups.

Hello all:

I just tried it out last night. The flipping itself worked. DOJ, however, still owns me left right and center...

That said, Shikigami no Shiro is so much easier with Tate. I can actually see the gaps between patterns now. First try, 4-1 boss with Kotaro when before, it was matter of luck.

Cheers.

Sorry to bump an old topic guys, I'm just really enthusiastic about my newfound skill with TATE in Shikigami No Shiro 2 :)

Seriously, I've been playing the game for 3+ months now, and I haven't gotten past 4-1 without losing a credit. After buying a cheap 13" TV at my local Blockbuster for $10 and deciding to flip it, I got to 4-2 but got killed by the boss. Still, quite an improvement! I can really see the holes/safe zones in the patterns now.

I just have to stop staring at the screen up close to play better.

Otherwise I get totally pwned by everything outside my viewing area.

Bigger screen helps of course.
