Edit: I messed that up hard. Thanks Kiken.

Hmm, I should try it sometime? But how to keep the fire button held down? Not set to L for each hand is it?

That'd be a godsend if I could find somebody to handcraft a doubleplay vid with.
DoublePlay or TandemPlay refers to a single individual playing 2 ships/characters simultaneously (the left hand controlling player 1 and the right hand controlling player 2).

Co-opPlay or TeamPlay refers to a pair (or more) of individuals working as a team, each controlling a single craft/character.

I've heard a lot of players that do doubleplays use two joysticks. It looks awkward to control, though. Raiden 3 on the PS2 had a good idea of allowing players to set 1P to the left side of a controller, and 2P to the right side, but that worked because Raiden 3 only used two main fire buttons.

In any rate, good luck on your ULTRA Doubleplay. ^_^

He would be using a pair of joysticks.

Left hand:

Pinky and Ring finger grasp joystick.
Middle finger usually supports the hand.
Index finger and thumb are used to press buttons.

Right hand:
Index finger and thumb grasp joystick.
Middle finger usually supports the hand (although can possibly be used to press buttons if they are close enough to the stick).
Pinky and Ring finger are used to press buttons.

At least one of the Ikaruga DP videos shows INO's hands - level 5, I think. When I was playing around with double playing Donpachi, I used the keyboard and a linked fire button. It's kind of restrictive, but it works well enough.

I remember a Ikaruga dual play video being posted here at some point.

found it on video google
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... &q=ikaruga

dont think this is all of it as I recall having a PiP of the players hands on the controls while playing

I think he remade all of the videos later with his hands shown after some people doubted the authenticity of the videos. I think this because I remember seeing chapter 3 or 4 with his hands shown too.

I've tried playing both ships at once. I had to use two GC controllers. Heh. It was really awkward, although the hardest part was keeping track of both ships and not confusing one for the other, not actually controlling them.

Btw, what's the real name of the true last boss? "Shin Aki" or "Aki & Aka"? I guess this one makes sense if the bug is actually called Aka...

Oh I'm glad to see some interest in this. My game for the shmup dev compo is using this mechanic. (Attack Force Duo) Can anyone offer some tips for making a game like this?I thought this was a semi original concept but if it has been done I would like to know how to make it the most balanced to play.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Someone want to fill them in on the whole concept of Double-Play?

Then again, it was also funny to see them post that the God-like players on the Ibara DVD were able to navigate the entire game without a single death.

I've been trying out doubleplay on Viper Phase 1 (damn this game is fun!), and wonder if it would be considered cheating to use foot pedals for the buttons, so that way I don't cramp my hands trying to move the joystick and hit buttons at the same time?

Of course its much cooler to see someone walk into an arcade and pull of a doubleplay with standard 2 player control panel.
