Purchasing advice.

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Ok I'm looking for a good published shmup game for PC. I know there are may in Japan and not so much in the US. I'm just looking for some game ideas to buy off ebay. I can't ready any Japanese. Are there any good commercial shmups out there with english menues? I just got Raiden III and am looking for another professional quality shmup for PC. I just got Taito Legends 2, I'm looking for a non arcade game something that gives me a challange, and is not intended to be a quarter eater difficulty-wise. I like verticle scrollers best.

Can you help me please?

How about the excellent Imperishable Night?

It's a doujin (fan made) game, but really high quality and not too difficult. There's some Japanese, but nothing that's important really (just story bits between stages). The menus are all in English.

Oh yeah, and it's really cheap too. :)

Imperishable Night is a good choice. Bloodflowers review for more info:

Shikigami No Shiro III is just out as well and is said to be awesome.

Thanks guys! Are there any good compilation games? I wouldn't mind having some classics on pc too. I'm surprised that there are so few shmups with english menus for PC.

Both volumes of Taito Legends are available for PC. That's a great way to enjoy Raystorm, Raycrisis and G Darius in VGA. :)

There's also a ton of other classics like Rayforce, Gun Frontier, Darius Gaiden, etc.

Why not try DoveZ.

You can download the demo to try out and even the full OST is available for free. It is a pretty nice hori shooter that was indeed officially released (can also be bought through amazon.de)
Soundtrack is very nice and there's some nice graphics too. Just try it out to see if you like it. I think it's worth the 10 Euro it sells for!

I owned the original but sold it off later when I needed some quick cash. :(

If you can find it used, you might wish to look into Raiden II. It had an excellent PC port. An oldie but a goodie!

They're arcade ports, but the PC recieved the EX version of Shiki 1 and a great port of Shiki 2. Hell, you can get them both in one pack for cheap.

If you are looking for shmups and are willing to buy shareware then the shrine maiden series is your best bet. They are all excellent, although the must buy's if you're gonna get any of em' should be Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night.

to be fair, i just want to say that the first one (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) is quite good as well. it's just not nearly as refined as the following two games.

and i think after everything, the best option you have is to try everything. shootthecore.moonpod.com is a great resource for lots of the trials for the japanese doujin games. just go to the "pc database" section. free trials, find out what you like, buy. and win.

Never said it was bad. I love it. It just, like you said, lacks the polish that PCB and IN have. If you're gonna pay the same for them, I'd take PCB over Embodiment. Although, I have aquired all of them various means *Ahem*
