Question about the 1st Z-Gundam game on the Saturn
Question about the 1st Z-Gundam game on the Saturn
I finally decided to try this game out and the cinemas aren't showing up for me (they're just black screens albeit with the appropriate sound). Everything else looks fine except the movies (the anime sequences and even the Bandai logo animation). There's no scratches at all on the disc. Therefore, I'm just wondering from anybody else who's played the game if this is a 4-in-1 converter cart issue or if it is indeed a defective game disc. And for some reason, the cinemas in the 2nd Z-Gundam game work perfectly for me.
And if anybody disagrees that this game and its sequel are shmups (since they aren't listed on the Xenocide Files), I'd like to note that it's not that much different from SDF Macross, with all the requisite "no gravity," auto-scrolling features a shooter has. But meh, it's up to the mods' discretion.
And speaking of Macross, I don't remember if it was brought up before in earlier "the Xenocide Files are messed up" topics but in case it hasn't, there's only one Macross game for the Saturn. SDF Macross and Macross DYRL are one and the same.

Agree
all those games rfom the 90 and 80 which bases on "Universal century" sucked ,it doesn't matter on what system it is on.
Btw.
(of topic)
I wanted to play the game version of Stardust memory.
The Gundam with that awesom back thruster with the oversize cannon
or
that Gigantic Zaku with detachable lasers.\

You have misread my post Redknight.
I am a UC fan, the reason why all Gundam games are bad(except the ones from the 80s) because of the post-UC series like God and Wing(the most recognized Gundam series in the western world) on Super Famicom and PSOne, the Gundam Seed games on PS2 and the whole Capcom/Banpresto crap in the XX vs XX series.
The Saturn Zeta games were Famicom Zeta remakes, and they didn't even tried to redraw the animations for the game unlike their PSOne counterpart. Are they really SHMUPS anyway?

it doesnt work period, it just loads and loads but nothing happens.Ganelon wrote:Hey, thanks. Does it just not work on your roommate's Saturn or is it the same "black screen with sound" problem I have (that can be skipped by pressing the Start button a few times)?
strange that, as magical drop 3 doesnt load on my saturn but works perfectly on his

also id have to say the z-gundam games are more run'n'gun games than shmups.. (not that it matters, just to clarify)
Thanks, sven. Sounds logical. I figured the same guy who sold me both games in pristine condition didn't have one defective (the cheaper one at that) and the other working.
As for them being shmups, can anyone say why they wouldn't be? I mean, they play like shooters albeit with a bit more options to use. A run-n-gun I'd classify for a game like SD Gundam Psyco Salamander where although there's forced scrolling, you jump and are affected by gravity much like Adventure Island. And for that matter, why isn't SD Gundam Neo Battling mentioned in the Files when it's impossible to differentiate it from any other shmup? I'll admit though that the Saturn Z-Gundam games do feel "different" in some way from normal shmups, maybe because of the life meter and very short stages. If they added a jump button, the controls would feel equally at home with a sidescroller.
And yes, Gundam games tend to suck ass. Aside from the GGeneration games and the trio of SD Gundam X games (in other words, besides the strategy games), the other Gundam games were some of the worst ever. Notable standouts from the crap IMO include Endless Duel, the Battle Masters/Assaults, and Capcom Vs. games.

PS1 CCA and Zeta were decent, but only because the fully remake animations. The gameplay was sub-par at best.Soldato J wrote:What about Char's Counterattack and the PS1 3d Zeta game? Encounters in Space is cool too.......I know what you guys mean (typically Bandai + any anime license = crap), but it got a little better in recent years....
Encounters in Space = ANOTHER 0079 3D shooters. PLEASE...
Guess what? Namco and Bandai is going for another one soon.
IMO, Char's Counterattack (and its prequel Z-Gundam) for the PS was mediocre. The movement was incredibly sluggish (even worse in Z-Gundam where you'd be facing the opposite direction for seconds no matter what direction you faced if your opponent got around you). Plus, there was little playability (wow, you just move around while holding block, maybe get a lock-on, shoot or beam slash) and the suits were heavily unbalanced. The ReGZ sucked while the Jagd Doga rocked. At least it was better than Z-Gundam where the GP02A was in every way inferior to The-O.
Only the 2D-3D cinemas were nice and there weren't much of them either.
Encounters in Space...is a fair game for hardcore Gundam fans. I actually won the game from Bandai and still have an extra sealed copy I bought. Still, it offers space movement that feels unnatural in the same way as the PS1 Gundam "arcade" games (maybe that's why so many Gundam action games avoid space battle). The game is great if you want replayability in your games since it has way too many secrets. For people like me who don't want to spend 20 hours on an action game, it got boring fast.
Yeah, Bandai is getting better from the absolute garbage they put out in the past like Z-Gundam: Away to the Newtype (can you imagine a game released in 1996 that looks much worse than SFC launch games?). Still, V-Gundam was arguably more fun than the Saturn Z-Gundam duo.
