Manic shooters

Post by metsfan »

does anyone know of any good manic shooter games. For those that dont know a manic shooter is a game in which most of the screen is taken up by enemy bullets at any given time. Some good examples are Samidare and Ikaruga. If anyone knows of any GOOD ones that i can download/demo/buy and provide links that would be most apreciated

thank you

Too brief of a question.

Which systems do you own? Can you play Japanese games?

LMFAO! I was going to say something like that but thought it was harsh for 2 count poster.

Giga Wing is the essence of the manic shooting genre.

DoDonpachi is the essence of the manic shooter genre.

If there is ONE manic shooter that has to be played, its Dodonpachi. No way around that game. Even if there are many people that have different favourite games, Dodonpachi pretty much defined many of the genres conventions. If you have the MAME emulator and access to the rom (links to roms are forbidden here, sorry) you should try it.

I am looking for games which run on windows or any of the current-gen systems (X-box, PS2, Gamecube).

and yes japanese games are certainly an option as long as they are for PC, unfortunaly my consoles are all NTSC-US

Well that basically puts my knowledge to shame.

The only Manics I know of that you didn't list are on Jap ps2.

If you have MAME, try Dodonpachi, ESP ra.de, progear no arashi.

Japanese DC might be an option since you have psyvariar 2 (use boot disc).

I'm sure other people have more knowledge than me.

You'll have to get a mod chip for your PS2 (or a Japanese PS2) to play the best current manic shoot 'em ups. Also, if you modded your dreX-box you could play some older shmups using Mame.

Imperishable Night is the way to go for Windows shmups. This isn`t just a manic shmup, this is an extreme barrage shooter - I can`t remember another shmup that has this many bullets on screen at once. Check out any of those videos to see for yourself.

If you have US systems, get Castle Shikigami 2 for PS2, Mars Matrix for DC and Chaos Field for GCN.

For PC get all the Tohou games, most notably Imperishable Night. http://www16.big.or.jp/~zun/top.html

You should consider getting your PS2 modded though to play Cave shooters like Espgaluda and Mushihimesama.

IMO your best bet would be to mod your xbox, it's easy, not even a chip needed. If you did you would have access to the CPS stuff (Mars Matrix, GigaWing, Progear), and Esp.Ra.De/Guwange via Final BUrn emulator. Mame(d)ox lets you play more or less any shooter up to the late 90's as far as Vasara 1/2, (with the exception of the PSX-based Taito shmups), also including DonPachi, DDP, Dangun Feveron and tons more.

I do not think Ikaruga is a manic shmup. The quantity of bullets in it is quite modest in comparison to Batsugun (probably the first of this subgenre). Besides, you don't have to avoid the bullets, you have to absorb them... thus some define it as a "gimmick shmup" or even a "disguised puzzle". :P

You can get the US version of Shikigami for PS2 for around 10-15 bucks so pick that up. Gigawing for DC and Ikaruga for GC.

As far as U.S. releases go, you best console of choice is the Dreamcast. It got three manics, GigaWing, GigaWing 2, Mars Matrix, and one borderliner, Gunbird 2.

Like others have stated, I highly suggest spending some money to make your PS2 import capable, especially for Caves offerings. As of now, the only manic shmup offering on the system in the U.S. is Castle Shikigami 2.

Right because it's first shooter that defined manic shmup patterns(Example:Plauteau boss he's crazy as hell if he shoots bullet pattern at start)

If you`re just getting into the manic shmup genre, choosing a game that has a huge list of things that you should NOT do might not be the best idea. Battle Garegga is a classic game and I am not saying that DDP is better (or Cave vs Raizing), but DDP is a prime example of a manic shmup, with the well known bullet spam and tiny hitboxes.

So Garegga introduced small hitboxes and bullet spam earlier, but DDP is a way more accessible manic shmup while being very over-the-top, and a example that shows characteristics of manic shooters more clearly.

That said, Garegga would certainly be on the "must-try" list for manic shmups, along with Shiki2, Imperishable Night, Espgaluda and so forth. Maybe we should make such a list some time in the future and make it sticky, for arriving new members.

Shikigami 2 and Psyvariar Complete are ones to get for the US PS2. There are others, but make those two priority, you won't be disappointed.

You won't find much on the X or the Cube, however. As for PC, you can either buy the latest commercial stuff fresh from Japan (which will be compatible with your system, hardware depending) or you can buy doujin. Official stuff includes Shikigami 3 and Raiden 3, doujin stuff includes all of ZUN's works (the Touhou collection, ask around), Airrade Air, Hitogata Happa and so on. Again, ask around here for more info on purchaseable doujin stuff, as I tend not to stray into that area outside of recommendations. ^_-

I'm not sure when/who/why/etc. manic shooter was coined, but the word "manic" conjures up more than "lots of junk floating around," like intensity and speed. Here, I'll pick on a game I like! GW2, while it has plenty of bullets (to reflect), doesn't really require much intense dodging. It's methodical and sedate compared to Gunbird 2. "Bullet hell" I guess, but manic :?

When I think of the term "bullet hell", Chaos Field immediately comes to mind but then again most people don't like that game.
