Gradius Galaxies for the GBA. Easily the best shooter for the Nintendo Handhelds.

Speaking of Nanostray, did you know that the Japanese release (renamed "Danshaku") actually improves the control scheme? You can now change weapons with buttons, as opposed to the touchscreen.

Yserbius?? (you serious?). That's really cool. I really enjoyed Iridion 2, and maybe when I get Nanostray I'll import it now =)

Centipede on Atari Retro has beautiful control and looks great. The control is so good, in fact, that the game has become too easy imo, and I haven't found a way to up the difficulty level.

Hi there,

Nanostry is currently the only DS shmup. The GBA though has some more shoot em ups like Kiki Kaikai or Phalanx. A half-decent list can be found here:

Game Boy Advance:

Game Boy:

Game Boy Color:

Kind regards,

Carsten

I have Devilish DS. I like the stylish designs and the Castlevania-esque music, the gameplay is decent but pretty chaotic though. The double screens don't really help things in that respect either. Played it through and had fun, but haven't touched it since. I guess the Megadrive version is still better in the end? Haven't played it in years actually.

Definitely not a shooter though, but a real paddle game.

Funny that you bring up this older thread right now, because I got a Nintendo DS lite last week as a surprise present from someone who bought it pretty cheap abroad.

So these last days I kinda snatched at my old few GBA games still around and played some Gradius, Metroid and Castlevania when being en route. I'd stopped playing while I'm on my way but I figured if I owned a new portable again I could get some new stuff. Would have preferred a PSP thoo...shsst.

So speaking about shmups it seems Nanostray is the only one so far exclusive for the Nintendo DS. I bought it cheaply on the Net and I'm awaiting the parcel now. Although I read that the use of the touchscreen in this game is more of a handicap than an innovation in gameplay.

Yesterday I read excerpts from the developers diary about the stages of Nanostray 2. Apparently Nanostray was a commercial success to them so they decided to do a sequel. The interviewer asked him about the touchscreen feature and he said that they were contracted to do this game and therefore forced to implement it in Nanostray. Now, doing part 2 on their own, they abandoned the touchscreen and you do everything with the buttons. Still the screenshots didn't look that different or great to me.

I guess I'll buy 1 or 2 nice japanese import games. All you find around here in shops is the hole Mario family stuff, pokemon shit and all these "braintraining" games.

Let me know if you know about some cool japanese shooter for the DS.
