Raiden III official thread.
Not exactly, it's actually based on how fast you take down enemies. If i have understand it right, you have one second before normal enemies are worth just a x1 (instead of a x2, so if you take down an heli after half a second, x2-0,5=x1,5, sorry for the screwy algebra). Of course bigger enemies will have the multiplier to go down slowlier. The basic idea is to to keep the pace pretty high.Stormowl wrote:
thanks for the heads up. nice little movies that are pretty selective in showing the heavy action.
there is obviously a score multiplier whose value seems to depend on how close you are to the ship you destroy, ala ketsui. the multiplier seems to be extended then by destroying other ships quickly, like DDP. i'm no expert, that's just what i get from the vids.
the only potential problem i see is the speed of the raiden ship, however the original raiden ships have always been sluggish. perhaps there is an unlockable hot rod from raiden fighters jet or something...

Good stuff.
I'm starting to be a little concerned about any forthcoming PS2 port however.
Reading comments in the Gigawing Generations thread like "some of the bullets flicker so much that they are difficult to see" about that very first Type X to PS2 conversion...
If the PS2 hardware can't handle these Type X ports then they should wait a year and give us a perfect release on PS3. The new console is almost here for google's sake. It would also give the arcade Raiden III more breathing room to keep making money.
Imagine a Raiden III launch title for PS3, at perfect 60fps tate with extras (can you say Raiden Fighters?
). PS2 had a genuine shmup near-launch title in Japan - Gradius III+IV - so why not... it would sell. Maybe even better than releasing a potentially imperfect port a few months earlier onto PS2.
Also, does anyone else think that Raiden III with its simple polygon graphics, traditional gameplay and synth music, looks like it might feel a bit like Trizeal?

wow..thanks paradious! stage 3 looks so sick especially when the green beam appears..then later you shoot the things on top of the poles and the poles start dropping from the sky..really cool stuff...damn this game already got me stoked for a port
The cave whore count in this thread is unbelievable!!!
Nice side-by-side comparison.Thunder Force wrote:Also, does anyone else think that Raiden III with its simple polygon graphics, traditional gameplay and synth music, looks like it might feel a bit like Trizeal?

Actually, one of the first things that I said to Super Laydock was how since I don't recall playing any of the previous titles in the series, watching the Raiden III movies on the official site did remind me a bit of Trizeal.
That said, I do think that they'll play very differently, and currently, I'm quite looking forward to Trizeal -- It looks like it's going to feel very adventurous, like a journey! But, well, this is a thread for Raiden III. It does look pretty good to me as well, but we've only just been introduced.

As for a home console port; I get the feeling that GWG simply had some issues to begin with. There's one part where the game seems to slow down, just as the level 3 official movie fades out, but everything else seems to flow quite smoothly! (Note that I've seen only the level[1|2|3].zip movies from the official site.)
Of course, being that I don't have a PS2 to play a potential home port, I'll step out in the open and remark that I wonder if a Type X-to-Dreamcast port would ever be possible (in any practical fashion, from a technological standpoint, hypothetically and theoretically-speaking). That, or PS3 all the way.

(Or Revolution! We can control the ship on the touch-screen, featuring a mini-representation of the game screen! Ha ha, aha.)

"I know it will be awesome, but it won't be on any US-Friendly console probably. Crying or Very sad"
I see no reason to assume that SCEA won't approve this game for US release. Raiden is a major shmup franchise that even non-shmuppers are familiar with-just as much so as Gradius and R-Type, and we got the last games in those series. And don't forget that SCEA allowed in Castle Shikigami 2, which is a series hardly any gamers outside this forum probably know about.

As long as the localizer doesn't mind packing the game in a bundle or releasing it for $10, SCEA won't refuse them. Many localizers can't accept that though.
Also, I doubt most gamers nowadays know what Raiden is. Yeah, it was the pre-eminent everywhere shmup of its day but remember that the franchise has been dead for about 10 years now.

The PSX port of Raiden DX didn't even make it over, remember. Maybe if there was an X-Box port, U.S. distribution would be more likely. Of course, then I'd have to buy a goddamn X-Box.
Still, as soon as a Japanese PS2 port is even announced, I'll be pre-ordering. If it comes to the states, I'll buy it again!

I agree (with the four or so above posts). I was talking with someone new in my neighborhood a... er.. while ago (maybe last fall?) and I we got to talking about video games, and at first it was the "Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance" and all that, the mainstream games and consoles, and then I had mentioned that I'm into the DC, but surprised him with mention that games were still being released for it. I tried to describe the types of games that they are, and I think that I cited Galaga and maybe Gradius, and he jumped in and said, "Oh, like Raiden?"
I myself knew less about Raiden then, but recognized the name, and was like... "er... yea!" So, this guy is about twenty-six, and he's into artistry and mainstream US games and Mexican food, so I'm inclined to believe that Raiden is a fairly common household name. Well, maybe not that common, but still. I'm glad that you guys brought this up, though, because now I feel that I could try the game sometime! I only hope that the porting goes well (if they do port it, I mean)...

I just watched the video this morning, and I think the detail in this game looks great. The enemies still explode into pieces ala Raiden II when you destroy them-OK, so maybe not as MANY pieces; big deal. The explosions are still rockin' as well.
As I've said before, given Gradius V, and R-Type Final, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Raiden III sees a US PS2 or PS3 release.
And OT, I'm pretty skeptical about the PS3 being released in the Spring of 2006-handhelds notwithstanding, the vast majority of consoles get Holiday season releases, so I don't think we'll see the PS3 until late 2006-which would leave plenty of time for a PS2 Raiden III release.

Yea, you know that it's "ray" and "gay." It's way too easy to fall into English pronunciation of these words, so, I can't quite blame them. Even I made myself practice saying "ninja ga-i-de-n" after the release last year, and of course "ra-i-de-n" when this game popped up, after I realized that they were in fact Japanese words, and thus were subject to the Japanese pronunciation that I had familiarized myself with over the past year.
I don't say "knee-n-ja" instead of "nin-ja" though. I feel like some old guy poking fun at Japanese peoples' accents when I do (although maybe I should stick with it until I'm no longer reminded... ?).
So, if the game sees a console release, and an international one at that, hopefully the game will reiterate its own name vocally at the title screen or something... That'll make sure that everyone's on the same page!
(By the way; Some of the most fun that I've had relating to these boards, was practicing saying "So-u-kyu-gu-re-n-ta-i" after reading you guys talk about it in a thread. I was saying it over and over one day, "spelling" it out, speeding it up every time so that I'd be able to say it quickly without blurring any syllables together... fun fun!)

Good point. At some point, exact Japanese just sounds weird and the English word sounds more fluid. For example, for DonPachi I don't ever say 'doh-n pah-chi.' I Americanize it into just 'don pa-chi.'icepick wrote: I don't say "knee-n-ja" instead of "nin-ja" though. Quick note
The official name for the green laser is "Proton Laser".
Also, I've cooked up some unofficial names for the bosses posted on Moss's website so far. This time, I culled from the demons listed in the Lesser Key of Solomon. It's over at http://www.deliriumsrealm.com/ if you want to check to see why I chose the names I did.
1: Belial
2: Camio
3: Forneus
4: Astaroth
5: Volac
6: Crocell

OK, I thought I posted a reply in this thread last night but it seems to be gone.
Anyways, watched the DVD video rip last night (thanks Parodius!) and I don't see what the beef is some folks have with the 3D rendering. I think it looks great and emulates the visual style of the old games very well.
Old school vanilla bullet patterns, just a lot more and much faster. Great explosions with lots of debris, fighters, tanks and turrets leave craters after they explode. Another nice touch I noticed is the spread shot makes the same raspy "zap zap za-a-a-p" noise when hitting enemies. My only very small gripe so far is debris doesn't make contact with the ground and make the nice little dust clouds of the old games. But oh well, can't have it all.

Here's a cool ad from the back cover of Arcadia #60.
