Mastodon - Blood Mountain -- Its spell is finally wearing off a bit. One problem, the final track. I think they should've ended it with a little more energy to break from the usual formula, and the "hidden track" is unacceptable in 06.

Yeah, the hidden track is stupid, though I don't mind the last song-- it adds to the overall variety, one of the strengths of the album.

Sadly, no. Most of their contemporaries were pretty 'tarded. Case in point: Vio-lence, Forbidden, etc. etc... I don't think I could suggest anybody you wouldn't have heard of already (Voivod, early Prong, etc.). Sorry, man.

That Nachtmystium album is good though. I'm not familiar enough with the newer metal stuff to really describe it. Post Metal? Regardless, I like, along with most of Southern Lord's other stuff.

Yeah I was a bit miffed after all that waiting just to be treated to an unfunny skit at the end of the CD. The final proper "song" on the took some getting used to but its not bad.

On a related note I got to see Mastodon play live last Thursday along with Converge

and the Bronx

Mastodon flat out ruled as expected. Troy stomped and jumped around the stage like a madman and the sound wasn't too bad either despite the shitty venue. The best was thier playing "Hearts Alive" as thier encore. They couldn't have gone out on a better note.

Rob, if you haven't already heard them, you might like Holy Terror. They only had one album and I believe it was from about '88. At the time, I considered them Slayer's equal.
