All the Good PS2 Shmups
Since I can play imports now, I'd like to know everything that's worth getting for the PS2. Say why you think so if you can.

Everything? Dunno if I can do that, but I'll name a few...
DDP DOJ: Been discussed to death, very nice port, tough as nails.
ESPGaluda: See previous, although this one's much more accessible.
Mushihimesama: Not as good a port as the previous two, but if you're not gonna get the PCB then snag this, the important stuff seems intact.
Ibara: If Garegga was too easy for you, try this one.
TSS: La Petite Princesse: If you don't own TSS in any of its previous forms, snag this, especially since it's got a budget version coming out soon.
Psyvariar 2: Apparently the port with the most extras and whatnot.
Psyvariar Complete: Both games worth playing, snag this or else grab the Superlite versions separately.
Those, IMO, are the highlights...
Otherwise, I honestly think Gigawing Generations is a very good game, but the low port quality hampers it (IIRC that one got/is getting a budget release too though, so it might be better acquired at that price). Shienryu Explosion's not bad for the price either, especially if you don't have the original Shienryu already. Star Soldier's much the same story. I'm not a huge fan of XII Stag, but a few others like it, so who knows. Same story for the Psikyo packs, though IIRC the Sengoku and Sol Divide/DB packs are overall better than the Gunbird and Strikers ones.
Gradius V, Gradius III and IV, the Taito Memories packs, R-Type Final, and Shiki I and II are available in US/Europe versions already, so not sure if those apply to your case...
Haven't played Homura, Trizeal, or Raiden III. I have Radirgy on my DC and like it, but supposedly the PS2 port is inferior...
Did I forget any?

I have a copy of Giga Wing up for grabs... XII Stag to if you're interested.I honestly think Gigawing Generations is a very good game
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Although, if the US domestic port of Raiden III ever comes out, it will be likely be around $10. That wouldn't be a bad price if you are just looking for a mindless excuse to blow things up.Kaiser wrote:Eveything that bulletmagnet recommended but don't buy raiden III it's not good for a today's shmup quality

I'd recommend Homura. Nice patterns, interesting gameplay with the sword slash/reflect mechanic going on. Graphics aren't so hot but it's solid and definitely worth it when the budget release comes out.
Feedback will set you free.

Both Taito collections have a couple of shmups on them (some that you didn't mention are Akkanvader, Gekirindan, Grind Stormer, Raystorm, and probably one or two others I've forgotten). They're pretty much emulations of the original arcade versions, and generally pretty good as such...the only "major" issues that some have with them is a) I don't think the games run in their original resolution, and b) the vertical shooters can't be played in tate.
I'm speaking from the perspective of the JP versions, not sure how the other releases compare, though I'd assume they're pretty close.

It's one of my favorite shooters. It's quite different from the average shmup. Instead of brainless enemies, you find yourself constantly fighting bosses. I found it quite refreshing. Next to that, you really need strategies to come further in the game. I would really recommend it.Never_Scurred wrote:http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-r-7 ... 0-xaz.html

About Choaniki: Sei Naru Protein Densetsu.... Well, it's pretty gay. If you ain't afraid of gayness all over the place, this could be a hole in one for you. It has to be your cup of thea though.

Mushihimesama is also a nice one to pick up, it's pretty cheap now. Could be a nice step into the world of Cave.
