Oh yes. I have been insulted for not doing drugs. Just not here.sffan wrote:

Likewise, there are also a significant number of people who believe in God on here, yet it's always a given that plenty of people on here (including yourself) immediately start voicing opinions about how stupid and ignorant Christians are whenever anyone makes a comment about God or religion. Yet I don't remember anyone on this topic saying that people who do drugs are losers. Spec made the point that getting into harmful substances, whether they be drugs or alcohol, is not good. The only time I was rude was when I made a comment/joke about poli-sci majors and how often they are unemployed (I can think of a good example of someone on here we're all aware of).sffan wrote:In a forum about shmups there must be a significant number of us who like to get high while playing, so it is kind of offensive when someone comes along and says drugs are for losers. heh yeah I've noticed that some people here seem to wet their pants when ever the "J" word is mentioned. Now I'm atheist and I'm comfortable with my beliefs but I've noticed some guys like to call themselves atheists and then totally embarress themselves by taking ignorant attitudes towards christians. It doesn't matter that Christianity is one of many religions that include fundamentalists, these hate filled idiots(I won't call them atheists) just pour on the idiocy and hatred.
If you are comfortable with your beliefs and open minded you shouldn't have to become the atheist equivalent of a religious fundamentalist.
Oh yeah and Greg lay off the liberal arts majors. Not everyone can be happy or successful being a science major. You don't even have to go to college to be successful. College graduates are a small proportion of the population and science graduates are an even smaller minority. Just open your eyes for a little bit and you will see that the world is not filled with nothing but pan handling English majors and homeless guys who never went to college.

FRO said, "Winners don't do drugs" and said he agreed 100% with that statement. This implies that if you do drugs then you're a loser. Nothing wrong with that opinion, but others have a right to express alternate opinions.greg wrote: Yet I don't remember anyone on this topic saying that people who do drugs are losers.
Sorry I shouldn't have said, "lay off" because it sounds hostile. I didn't mean that.

Thanks Noob, I'm glad you see things that way. It's funny to see atheists constantly trying to prosyltize everone into becoming athiests.
However,
However,
Gosh, I really think you were reading too far into what I was saying. My ribbing of poli sci majors was nothing more than you'd experience from watching MST3K or reading a Dilbert comic strip, both of which have had plenty of fun with such majors. I'm certainly not a science guy... I dropped out of computer science and majored in business. I took the easier way out, I guess you'd say. This is not to say that the knowledge gained from liberal arts isn't valuable; it just tends not to be very beneficial when looking for a job. And that's not to say that people with such degrees can't get a job.. Please, don't read too far into what I said. The n00b wrote:Oh yeah and Greg lay off the liberal arts majors. While we're busy generalizing, let's not forget our christian friends who constantly try to convince me, even knocking on my door trying to convert me. I already know I'm a devil worshipper who will burn in hell along with the homo-sexuals...Even my own parents force me to go to church every week (or they did when I was at home, I stopped immediately once I moved out). It's funny to see atheists constantly trying to prosyltize everone into becoming athiests.
Personally I've had quite enough

Just adding some fuel to the fire

Well Greg it all depends on the job you're trying to get. If a liberal arts major tries to compete in the computer science field with computer science majors, he'll of course get burned. However, you seem to concentrate on what liberal arts majors don't have instead of what they do have.
1. You have presentation skills. You've probably done more presentations than any one science major except perhaps some Electrical Engineers.
2. Research skills. You've spent a long time researching boring subjects for long hours and can be depended on not to do a half assed research attempt. Now obviously some people are worse at this than other's.
3. People skills. Those cultural classes make you one of the first choices for the PR field. You've been taught to see the other side of stuff. It also makes you pretty good choice for a manager position.
4. Writing skills. This is one area where science majors can't even compete in nor should they try. By the time of graduation, even the worst liberal arts major is at least a decent writer. This makes for reports that can be easily understood.
5. You can also teach high school. Sure any science major can do the same but have you tried managing a bunch of kids without adequate people skills? It's not easy.
Now the purpose of this post is not to say liberal arts>>sciences. I'm just saying that each has its place. Beneficial job skills is purely in the eye of the beholder or the employer. As for the ribbing, I think it comes from the fact that a lot of science majors hate their managers and vice versa. One refuses to see the other side of the coin and the other is forced into the boss position and must look out for the company as a whole.

Unless he has computer science experience outside of the class room. Actually, I knew a guy who was a total computer genius... he just couldn't do calculus as required for his desired major. So he got his degree in history. Immediately after graduation he was snatched up by a computer business who was waiting for him to graduate all along. So once again, please don't read too deeply into my ribbings. I went to a small university where the bulk of the students were either business majors or education majors. I had education major friends, and we'd always engage in good natured ribbing. I don't see it as any different as PC vs Mac user debates. What comes to mind to me now is one series of Dilbert comics where in order to cut costs, the boss has power saving lights that are hooked up to motion detectors. So he hires a temp to walk around the building, waving his arms around to make sure the lights go off. Dilbert and Wally make some comment like, "And so another poli-sci major enters the workforce." See? Funny. Marketing types are equally made fun of in the comic, and international strategic marketing is what my major focused on. It's all fun. So please, relax.
And Neon, I'd certainly agree with you about how annoying Christians can be. Undamned and Specineff here are the only two Christian friends I have. Most people at church irritate me and I have nothing to do with most of them. I go to a pretty cool, laid back church, yet still I don't have much of a desire to interact with people. I guess that's also due to the fact that my wife is a bigger recluse than I am.
And I don't like door knockers whatsoever, be they door-to-door electric donkey bottom wiper salesman or missionaries. A few months back I had some guys from this one place... Church of Christ, I believe... they came and knocked on my door. I live in a gated apartment complex, so technically nobody's allowed in, but they do so anyway. So I told them, "Hey, I'm a Christian too." Instead of just saying, "Oh, that's cool, man," and move on to pester someone else, NO, they had to stand there and argue with me. "Does your church tell you that you need to accept Jesus into your heart?" "Um, yeah, sure. Whatever." "Well, where does that say that in the bible? It doesn't! The only way to salvation is through water baptism! Only our church knows the true way! Come to our Wednesday meeting and discover the truth. blah blah blah." Sheesh. I thought a heartfelt "Fuck you" was in order, but instead I just politely closed the door on their face.
While I was living in Japan, I saw lots of Mormon missionaries with their black nametags and white shirts and ties riding around on their bicycles (always with a helmet, of course), bugging Japanese people. I was approached once, and that motivated me to do some research on Mormonism and learned just how goofy the cult is. It made me want to confront them and argue with them and point out how stupid I think their religion is. But you know what? I realized that at that point, I was becoming bigoted and intolerant. Yeah, I still think their religion is silly, but they aren't harming me so I leave them alone and don't think about them. My point is that these ardent atheists act just as zealous as missionaries. So you don't like Christians because they don't agree with your beliefs and are always trying to change your mind. Fine. So why do so many atheists act the same way? It's just as obnoxious. It's hypocritical. Two wrongs don't make a right. Three rights make a left. Whatever, you get my point.
I've been on here long enough for a lot of users to know I'm a Christian, yet I don't "wear my religion on my sleeve," so to speak. I only speak out when my beliefs are chastized and ridiculed. Let's just all relax. Let's all act like pot smokers and just relax and forget, since those two are what pot smokers are good at. See? Another joke. Hur-huhr.
EDIT: BTW Neon... you live on the East Coast somewhere, right? I've heard that Christians are far more irritating over there than out here.

Yeah, I would agree...I don't dislike Christians as a whole though, don't get me wrong. I also know several people who are christian and a hell of a lot smarter than I am too (one about to get his PhD in psychology). So you don't like Christians because they don't agree with your beliefs and are always trying to change your mind. Maybe if I had been forced to go to a Protestant church every week instead I'd not be making such a fuss...Catholic church is really ritualistic, the same thing every week for the most part. I went to my friend's Presbytirian (sp?) church a few times and that was fun. Just fucking around in bible class with friends from school the whole time.
I can't say for sure there's no God either...but I agree with Stephen Hawking on Him I think. edit: And I should have said And here since this isn't what he thinks

I had a girlfriend who was a christian (i am an atheist). in talking about religion, she asked me "How can you be 'okay' with christianity or any religion? If you really believe you are right in your beliefs, shouldn't you try to convince others?"So why do so many atheists act the same way? It's just as obnoxious. It's hypocritical. She failed to see the humor.

It depends. If you know enough physics, then it's definitely possible. Diplomas are just gateways in to certain industries. you're not going to be a cardiologist without going to school for it. For the most part though, work experience is arguably as important, if not more important than what your diploma says. The n00b wrote:Unless you try to get a job teaching physics without a diploma...
