EBGames puts the PS2 release at 5/1/05, and the Xbox release at 8/15/05. Of course, we all know where these places tend to get a lot of their release dates...

Even though it's possible to get through each of the games in under 45 minutes the real point of buying a compilation is to keep on practicing to get a higher score and to play it again with some friends.
God, it's nice to know someone knows what the hell they're talking about.

Looking forward to this...I've heard bad things about 4 and 5, but what the hell.

I have the MVS carts for both 4 and 5 and there is no doubt that 5 is the better game. Still, regardless, it is great to see Sony allowing SNK to publish something.

i'd disagree, 5 is the worst imo. The levels dont seem to have any thought put into them and enemies seem like they were just placed anywhere without any real care. It's still decent though, its a slug game after all.

I haven't played MS5, but my favorites are MSX and MS3. It's a great series. Also, Shock Troopers is worth a look if you liked Metal Slug.

MS5 had the best bosses(stage 1, 2, and 4). They are very well designed, and challenging.
MS4 is better than many think. Stage 5 was incredible.
MS3 gets annoying. Stage 5's shooter levels were amazing, unfortunately the game goes WAY downhill after that. Most annoying level design I've seen in a metal slug game.

People complained about the credit situation in MS3 for the Xbox, so they changed it.

If you don't want to use infinite credits, just don't press start. ;)

Yeah, I think the limited credits in MS3 would have been difficult for me as well (haven't played Xbox ver yet). Like other shooters, there should be something like the more hours you play, the more credits you get.

As for not pressing start...it's damned hard for me not to :( Everytime I start up Strider 2 I get into this mindset thinking I'll use 2-3 credits, but end up using a bit more.

Couldn't they just use the old "play an hour, gain a continue" gimmick? Or at least let you set the continues in the options, for those of us unable to restrain ourselves?

But hey, if infinite continues gets more folks into Metal Slug, I guess that's OK. Too bad I can't stand the series...

It's interesting to see that Sony allows Metal Slug 4&5 to be released on US PS2s yet that wouldn't allow MS3.

Regardless, I'm thinking about getting this combo. Metal Slug is fun no matter what number in the series. I love watching those Nazi-looking guys scream their heads off when I torch them with a flamethrower.

What has happened with Metal Slug 3D?

That was looking to be amazing!

Amazingly crap! :)

Seriously, is this game still under development? Was it already released? Did they do the smart thing and canned it?

Actually, SCEA didn't stop Metal Slug 3 from release. It was accepted (as was SVC Chaos) under the condition that it be packed into something (probably also OK'ed as a budget $10-$15 release). SNK didn't have anything to pack it with at the time and it looks like they aren't going to pack it into the 4&5 set either.

Yeah, I think I heard something like SNKUSA being fed up with giving into Sony's demands, for awhile I think they were just going to stop releasing titles on the PS2.

But since there's such a large SNK fanbase on the PS2, I guess they chose to continue on releasing games on it.

IGN has seriously improved with their shooter and 2D reviews since the long lamented days of Anoop Gantayat's crappy Giga Wing DC review (where I clearly remember he compared the CPS2 visuals to SNES graphics in one of the screenshot text captions which is now gone from the archived review)

Another review that was very nicely done was Craig Harris's (probably my fave IGN editor, very balanced) review of Yoshi's Touch and Go where he emphasized the fact that you will enjoy the game IF you realize it's a game where you need to play for a refined high score. The review of Chaos Field for GC on IGNCube was very balanced too (although it had the obligatory comparison to Radiant) In a recent letter QnA he answered a reader who asked if they should buy the game and he said something tot he effect of "You will enjoy the game if you realize it's NOT a platform game but a very fun arcade game."

EGM has also improved quite a bit in this regard. Check out the very nicely written reviews for Gradius V and Yoshi's TnG as examples. Now it will be interesting to see how the respective EGM'ers review the Metal Slug 4 and 5 packs. It all depends on who is assigned to cover it of course.
