Aside from the loading times, Port >>>>>>> PCB.
This is coming from someone who has owned both.

No one else was going to change their mind (for some reason no one ever does on the internet) and we were going in circles... It was about 5 against one so I figure I will change my mind....

I have never seen sprite tearing using Linux + SVGALib + AdvanceMAME.
What graphics card are you using with this?

I tried both Windows and DOS advancemame. AdvanceCD (linux live CD) had a problem with the card I was using at the time. I haven't tried since then with the Radeon 7500 thats in my current mame setup. Thanks for the clarification, better help then what I got on arcadecontrols a couple years ago when I did this and basically gave up.
Unfortunately the ArcadeControls kids are all Windows/DOS users and 99.9% of them have never played an original PCB in their life.

And worse: you'll be openly flamed for even bothering with Linux. They seem to fear it like some sort of evil.

If you want to try with Linux/AdvanceMAME again, post your attempts in the tech forum and I'll gladly help you along the way. If I ever get around to building a new MAME setup (which I will within the next few months thanks to my new RGB monitor purchase the other week) I'll start a tech forum thread also documenting my progress along the way for anyone who wants to mirror the setup.

Check the SVGALib website for a list of support video card drivers in the 1.9.XX releases:
http://www.arava.co.il/matan/svgalib/

I personally have had success with a Hercules GeForce2MX Prophet and a HIS Radeon VE/7000 card.

Many ATi and Nvidia cards still allow pclocks to be set at 5-9MHz, which is what you want for 15KHz/CGA gaming and the "generate" modelines spat out by AdvanceMAME. General opinion by regular AdvanceMAME users is that older budget ATi cards have a higher success rate. Considering the ArcadeVGA cares are all based on ATi technology, that claim seems to fit well.

Avoid onboard video cards like the plague.

That's soooooooooooooooooooo much more expensive than just buying an RGB monitor and enjoying the game in it's best form (port).

Port port port.

i'd go PCB if I weren't afraid of bootlegs. I'd really hate to find that I paid $200 for a poor(is there any other kind?) bootleg of a game that I could have played on Mame for free.

Good news: A port is coming up :)

Bad news: It's for the Japanese 360.
