STGT 2k6 Week #3 Results
this is the kind of response i try to elicit when i name potential candidates for hidden gems week (very few of which are gems by any sense of the word unless you somehow synonymize gems with fecal matter)The Coop wrote:What in the hell is a Zing Zing Zip?

I'm not gonna deny that that's a good game, but it won't be hidden by Edge's supposedly wacky criteria since you have a replay of it
Omega Fighter (Special, even) is ripe because only five or six people in this forum have mentioned it, and nobody has a replay of it and/or has cleared a loop recently.

Both OF and OFS are pretty good. I'd prefer Special, but only because I used to play it a lot in my local arcade as a kid.
I dunno about the selection criteria, Hidden Gems will definitely be a strange week. Given the kinds of ideas being tossed around in the main discussion thread, it could be anything from OF to Trigon, Xexex to Thunder Cross, Truxton to 19XX. At least it'll keep participants on their toes. Which should make for an interesting playing week rankings-wise leading into the final week, Cave Week.

Val & Rick has the logical conclusion of how non-score-based shooting games should be scored.Rob wrote:It's a score-based competition.

Well, the more stuff you destroy, the more points you get. I fail to see how this doesn't qualify as a score based game? I could understand if there was flat out no score (aka, Mortal Kombat 2). But if it has a score, then it can be played for score.Twiddle wrote:Val & Rick has the logical conclusion of how non-score-based shooting games should be scored.Rob wrote:It's a score-based competition.

Games in the late 80s/early 90s carried on the tradition of including score (as did numerous other types of games that are worthless for score, like Sonic The Hedgehog), but it's like they weren't aware of the reason it was there to begin with. It's like continue timers in console-only games. A game would have to be brutally hard for survival based scoring to work, since it would divide skill levels properly. Like Fuzzy Shooting, except it's crap and I can't remember if it has score.

You strike a very good point. However, as companies may or may not have known why they included a score, I also know of very few competitions that used score as a basis for player comparison. Therefore, it isn't really the question to assess whether a company was moronic for including a score and not know why at the time, the question to continuously ask on each game is after all this time, can we still un-shelve these late 80s/early 90s games and decide if the score can work in competition judgments?
If a game boiled down straight to adjusting your position and shooting angle to hit the most targets to achieve the highest score, I would most definitely call that a scoring system. Personally, I like that system better than a chasing falling medals scoring system anyway.
Also, it would be correct that a survival-based scoring system would have to remain hard enough for all players to be completely unable to score a 100% kill rate for this type of system to work. (Maybe that will indirectly eliminate most late 80s/early 90s suggestions anyway)
Maybe this vote will come straight down to this forum's preferred 'scoring ideals'.
Sounds like if I do the poll again I should make some specific extra notes on what the scoring ideal/system is per nominee.

I can't think of one that is worthwhile. I like Thunder Force games a lot, but would even the hardest (4) work? No, a number of people would 1-life it easily, and there's little else to add aside from the end of game bonus. With less scoring opportunities, the less control a person has over their individual placement.DJ Incompetent wrote:can we still un-shelve these late 80s/early 90s games and decide if the score can work in competition judgments?
Oddly enough, Thunder Force 2 is the best TF for score. I'd play that.

Long game. Hard game. Lots of enemies to kill. Different weapons to get that will affect how many enemie you will kill.
