What're the latest shmup ROMs released for Mame32?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

As for the shmup emulation community, what are the latest developments as far as the latest shmup arcade ROMs to be 100% working (sound & graphics-wise) for use with Mame32 emulation program?

Aren't the Namco System 12 powered "Tenkomori Shooting/Tenkomori Variety Shooting" arcade ROM sets almost 100% decrypted? (I own the original Japanese Bios version of "Tenkomori Shooting" PCB and have already played the ultra-rare USA Bios version of "Tenkomori Variety Shooting" custom arcade cabinet at the California Extreme shows in the past including the CAX 2006 show held in July of 2006.) ^_~

And for the current Cave SH3 type motherboard powered shmups, any success on getting those decrypted to run on Mame32?

I don't follow Mame advancements to closely, but I remember Tenkomori working (not sure its 100%), although there are other System12 games which don't work at all. Don't hold your breath on Cave SH3 emulation, its going to be a long time for that to happen (both technically and politically).

Not likely. Last time I heard, the drivers were removed at request, and each board has its own type of encryption, meaning each game has to be decrypted seperately - no CPS2-style universal decryption routines here.

You can look forward to seeing Daioujou and Ketsui in... oh... 2020 perhaps. If anything, you're better off just buying the SH3-based Cave shmups or ports of them, if you're that desperate to play them.

Dai-Ou-Jou and Ketsui are on PGM hardware, not SH3. Not that it matters, probably the currently largest obstacle to emulation of DOJ is Arika defending their turf.

I'd be extraordinarily surprised if any of the Cave SH3 hardware games (Mushihimesama and on) have even been dumped or looked at in an emulation context.

The Cave SH3 games have a 133 MHz clock speed, so MAME probably might choke on them even on faster PCs. IMO, it's more likely that some anonymous author would pop up out of nowhere a few years down the road with his own emulator for this one using ASM.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

What about Raiden II? Will that game ever work properly? The ROM I downloaded had scrambled graphics, no sound, and was unplayable.

They never bothered to fully decrypt it. The Raiden Fighter series got all the attention, and then they never went back.

To be fair, the entire RF series has never had any faithful ports.

Oh yeah, don't forget that a good number or Toaplan shooters are still not emulated correctly (a good number or them plays fine without no sound).

I had a look on the Xenofiles Arcade list, but there are
way too many shmups to get them all, anyone have
a list of the must have shmups to try on MAME?

All of them? There isn't an arcade within 100 miles of where I live. And I live in one of the bigger cities in eastern washington. The only arcade cabinets are two street fighter II cabinets. Each at two Dominos' across town. Oh, and my friends grandma has a Donkey Kong Junior cabinet.

Just out of curiosity, which console would be best to play MAME on?

I dont find it fun playing on the PC with a keyboard :(

Then get a controller you dolt

There's not a better MAME experience to be had than on a well equipped, well configured PC.

Personal recommendation - those lovely Logitech Wireless Rumblepads, satisfyingly weighty, solid built, great d-pads and thumbsticks (I always play shmups with thumbsticks) - ah yes, you can even set up your own two-player-on-one-joypad mode or whatever wacky config scheme you can think of.

If you think playing a shmup on a PC with a controller is the
same experience as playin on a console then your a bigger dolt than me

Name calling aside, i dont like playing shmups on the PC, hence
my question 8)

Then you're missing out on a ton of awesome shooters, and I'm not talking about emulation.

But for emulation on a console the XBox is probably your best bet.

I kinda see his point... I play some on my PC but I don't enjoy it as half as much as sitting in front of my TV. Sitting at a desk looking at a average size monitor isn't as much fun to me.

Before I get a bunch folks ready to preach why I should play on a PC, keep in mind I do b/c that's my only choice for alot of games. I still wind up spending way more time playing console shooters though....

I've been thinking about getting an Xbox for the same reason.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Give me 10 great shooters for the PC, not ports, or anything
already available on MAME. Just for PC. I have no idea they existed :)

Hmmm, what about Xbox360? Id rather get that because it seems
a few Shmups are being ported over to it ;)

I have 2 DualShock controllers and 2 arcade sticks connected to my PC and a videocard with TV output. If I hadn't to fiddle with controler drivers and videocard configurations, it would be much like a console

Warning Forever, Idinaloq, Creature Jungle 16, Noiz2sa, Torus Trooper, Tumiki Fighters, Gunroar, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Night Raid, Radio Zonde, Tyrian.

I listed 11, could list 11 more if you want :)

This might be a good place to begin...

Off to the side, I play my console games on a monitor, heh heh.

Imperishable Night, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Airrade Air, and pretty much all of Kenta Cho's stuff. I'd highly recommend you to download some of these games, especially the demos of Imperishable Night and Perfect Cherry Blossom (you can find the links in the High Score threads here). I actually prefer them to most arcade/console shooters.

360 won't do since there is no way to mod it as of yet.

EDIT: BM and Shatterhand beat me to it.
