Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (Super Famicom)

Post by The Bullet Dodger »

Just wondering if anyone's played this one before. I have seen screenshots and it looks pretty damn good for an old Super Famicom shmup. I believe the original japanese title is "Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie", which I've seen on some info sites; gamefaqs.com being one of them. Could someone tell me about this one?

I tried it on emu and it rocks, from what I played. Not to be rude, but I don't really care much for the Xenocide files review that says it's one of the best shmups on the SNES and still gives a 7.5 to gameplay. From what I played, it think it deserves an 8 or a 9.

It's by far the best Macross game, definitely worth getting.

Actually, I was referring to the review on the right that said all this great stuff about the gameplay and still rated it a 7 for the gameplay category. Postman didn't do that review. It's not a poorly done review, but I have a problem with reviews that say stuff like "this is the best game for the system" and then later say that that isn't saying much.

BTW, I wasn't saying you wrote the review. I was pointing out that I was referring to a different review than the one you were referring to. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Probably the top SNES shmup, IMHO.

R-Type 3 comes in a close second.

Very good shmup actually, I remember playing it last year. From what I can recall, the effects were crazy...especially for the SNES.

Fun game, but I remember dying a lot when I played it last.

Better than the Robotech GBA game? More like fact to me.

Anyway, Scrambled Valkyrie is definitely hot stuff as any review might tell you.

I've only gotten to the third level, and it's been a while since I've played it, but I do remember not being too impressed. The first level is pretty kick-ass and has some neat effects, but the second and third levels don't even compare. But perhaps the game gets better after that point. I'm not really sure.

Don't just look at the screenshots! You have to see this game in motion to experience it's awesomeness!
Some Very novel ideas (like capturing you enemies and enslave them to work and blast for you) and fantastic effects are in this game.
It IS on the though side but when playing it for a longer time it's easy to perfect strategies to get furter in the game (which requires quite some memorisation).
If you have a SNES with a converter or a Super Famicom
get this game ASAP. It's a must for shmup fans owning this system! :D

Well, I do have it on emu for my DC. But it plays like crap. So I don't even bother trying to get that far in it. The graphics do look above average for a SNES shmup, IMO. It kinda reminds me of Super Nova. Anyway, I was never into the Macross series, and from what I've heard in the past, almost every Macross ever made pretty much sucks, with the exception of this one.

Didn't like it at all. The grafix are naff. Especially level 2 which is horrible.

One time this game was going for a fortune but you can get it really cheap now. (Probably because it's not very good).

I got this one yesterday - and I do get the impression that the ships are not evenly balanced. I wanted to use Maximilian but somehow I find he's lacking firepower against bosses. Plus, he seems to get more damage than the others.

I ended up using Milia - all least all three forms are useful- pretty tough game, still have to reach stage 4.

This game rules, the 7 for playability might be due to the transformation process, which i.m.h.o. is never a good thing, it is an extra strategical element however, but I'd rate this game about a 9,2. The levels get better as you progress I remember from the mindnote I made more than a decade ago.
This and UN squadron which everybody is probably sick of by now, but for newcommers a recommended piece of soft. Thanks Capcom

The game's great, but, IMO, Super Aleste will always be tops with me. I don't find it as entertaining as the Arcade Macross shmups, either.

I liked the game, but could never exactly figure out when the next hit would kill me. I'd expect to be in the clear, then find out that i was apparently down to my last bit of health. Annoying. Yah yah, go ahead, just say "You're not supposed to get hit."

I've been meaning to find time to try this game...maybe after my huge session with ESPGaluda

This is one of the first games I bought for my Super Famicom. I bought it for $25 complete. I wonder how much it sells for now. It was an excellent shmup for it's time. I still play it on rare ocassions.

Well...I bought the game back in '96 at a game convention. That was like what....10 years ago? :P I'm sure the value has increased over the years, as it is one of the better shmups in the SFC's library.

Almost. I almost, almost completed it with Hikaru. But then ...

Being a huge, really huge fan of the Macross [MOVIE], (the series isn't that nice compared to the movie) I immediately bought the game the day it hit the shelves and played it thoroughly for years just to hear the sample of the BGM in the last stage (which I knew it was going to be the last song in the movie, the same song that shows up in the last stage of Macross Ai Oboeteimasuka on Saturn).
The game isn't that difficult once you master the three Valkyrie forms by the way, and is indeed one of the finest SHMUPS on the SNES, and one of the most balanced too (unlike the widely overrated Axelay, for example). And it follows quite nicely the movie plot.
The same can be said of the wonderful Saturn game (which is not a conversion from the SNES, in case some of you was wondering, but a different game taken from the same movie) which is pretty much easier than the SNES Scrambled Valkyrie.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

How many stages has this game? Stage 6 boss is kicking my ass right now - luckily I basically get infinite continues to train at it.

So, any capture better than FEE-5400 in that stage? Thanks!

P.S. I like Axelay better, bite me :P
