There's also the hidden items which are uncovered by shooting at specific spots for a while. Plus there's the boss bonuses based on how quickly you destroy them, but they're pretty negligible.
-it's heavily a memorizer towards the end in the worst way possible
I'd have to disagree here. The first time I cleared Section O (or Stage 3 if you count by bosses) I also managed to twitch myself all the way to Section X, nearly clearing the game. You can free-form dodge a lot in this game, especially with the bosses.

Yeah, when there are a few small enemies flailing around an open room or, as you said, a boss. This game is way too clunky otherwise. Did you get lucky through W? Sometimes you can rush through the laser walls, other times not!

We're talking about the arcade version, right?

I'd say you can free-form dodge a lot more often than that. Most of the time, really. There are few places where knowing what's ahead definately helps (as with any shmup), like the pinball-section, but I never got the feeling I need to know this to have any chance of survival, as opposed to memorises in general.

That particular run was a mixture of luck and sitting on the edge of my seat being a nervewreck. I got through the laser walls but lost my last life immediately after.

Yes, of course.

I haven't. I've been meaning to get back to it ever since that run, but other games keep distracting me.

starforce has an unlimited number of levels, 24 named after the letters of the greek alphabet, then each level has an inifinity symbol boss but the level number keeps incremementing normally.

BTW - BAN REQUEST for anyone who is part of this tournament but hasn't played so far (apart from professor ganson and Turrican, who seem to have good reason for not taking part yet) and most importantly INCINERATION REQUEST for anyone who only plays in the last week. I notice several of the players on zero points are known cave fans and sitting out all the other weeks is just too ghey.

Damn, I Had no internet connection for this weekend, so I missed the voting poll. Though it wouldn't make much of a difference, I guess, as my pick would be Exerion. :D

Star Force is a good choice...

Seconded.

Also, RIDICULE REQUEST for players who only participate in Cave Week AND GET OWNED.
Seriously, lack of participation for good, understandable reasons is fair enough... but if you're holding out for the last week of the competition, well, you get no respect. Or are you scared of damaging your reputation as l33t shmuppers? ^_-

 you think that's really the case? Maybe we should wait until post week 5 ends to "cleanse the weak." It'd make for some pretty glorious spite anyways. Gotta love spiting things..

Or we could just point and laugh at the people who show proof of actually doing it when Cave week is over.

Can't say I'd wig-out at seeing randomly different guys near the week 6 top spots though.

People have plenty of time to compete in their "favourite games". This tournament isn't about that, its about displaying skills in a range of games you wouldn't otherwise play.

Now, I respect and admire good players. Lately, I have a growing respect for players who are able to pick up any kind of game style and produce good results; players who compete irrespective of game style preference; and players who compete without fear of how well they will do or where they will place on the table. If I wanted to cherry-pick my games, or only compete in "games that I find fun" or in games that I'd have a good shot at placing high on, I would have just played in Raizing Week. However, that's not good for me as a player, or for my team.

Honestly, I suspect most of the zero-points players have a good reason for not even competing (real life, work, study etc), and my previous post was a little joke to stir the pot. But if you're just sitting out and hanging on for Cave Week... well, a little thought - at least the bottom half of the league table has bothered to give it their best.

"Known Cave Fans?" Did the courts hand down that verdict? Did they evade some lesser charges due to their tiny hitboxes? Was a multiplier taken into account when deciding the length of their sentence? :P

Granted, I'll join you in wagging a finger at anyone who's not playing certain weeks simply because they don't like the games selected and not for legitimate reasons (c'mon, you signed up for the thing, why waste it?), but the mindset of some around here that "if you prefer games a, b, and c then you're automatically x, y, and z as a person" is really silly...

Personally the thing I have taken away so far is an appreciation for games I have not played so much in preference of Cave game. Although I have both Blazing Star and Batrider I never really gave them a good play through or tried to learn them.

Playing games I would not normally is certainly the best bit so far... That said I probably won't bother putting much time (if any) this week. This batch of games does not float my boat much but if I have a spare hour I might have a go.

Either way, there's good points thrown around on all ends. But the fact remains, we've only run through 1/3 of the tourney. Still plenty of room for individual redemption. 5-7 player teams were decided on so not everybody has to go back-to-back-to-back-to-back every 2 weeks.

At the end of it all, I feel this is still a Team Tourney first, an individual tourney distant second. What else everybody gets out of it after the 12 weeks are done is for their experience to share for whatever fun it was worth, however many weeks they chose to involve themselves being 12, 10, 6, or even 2.

Sure this is worth talking about, but let's hold this talk till at least after Hidden Gem Week...when participation facts start shaping into something more solid.

Actually Cave are by far my favourite shmup developer so i'm not slinging Fanboy accusations, but i'm sure you know what i'm getting at - there are a few folks who registered for this contest who are very vocal about their love for Cave, and some of them haven't bothered to play in the contest yet.

I'm not being at all serious here and i mean no disrespect to anyone, i just feel that videogame contests, like many things in life, are better if people embrace them fully and so far not too many of the contestants are doing that.

In neon blue and/or pink, of course. :P

I agree, I just don't think that which game style someone prefers has anything to do with it, while...

Even if you're not, a sizeable number of members here do seem to believe that with all their hearts, and aren't afraid to say so at every available opportunity. I won't harp on this, but I figured I ought to point it out.

Back to the tournament at hand. :)

Asking for teh r0mz here is a no-no, regardless of the occasion. I believe it was established fairly early when the competiton was given form that everybody would be on their own when it came to acquiring the games to play, no links would be given and no requests would be fulfilled.

---

I know Shocky (a fellow Team Skandinavian) has been extremely busy with school, work and travelling around the globe, so he's got a solid reason for not to be posting scores.

Damn, that sucks. Good luck with that problem. Does this mean that my terrible score will actually count against us? Crap. I better find some time to practice.

How is it that typing "Star Force rom" into Google wasn't your first step?

Apologies to my teammates, but I better drop out of the comp. I didn't submit scores to the last two games due to a friend from the states visiting me for a month, and now that I have proper time to devote to the challenge you guys chose some crusty old game. Every second I play it I ask myself "but J, isn't life short and sweet? shouldn't we make every moment count? and yet you're spending valuable hours on...this...?" If I must waste a good portion of my better days on video games, it sure as fuck isn't gonna be that one.

So yea, good luck to the West Coast players, I'm sure my absence will not be missed.

Hilariously enough, Star Force is the game I take the most pleasure on since the beginning of the contest... That is to say I'm a bit disapointed with the choice of the games...

Star Force isn't so bad. Blazing Star was definitely a worse pick. That'll be hard to top.
