I vote for Starforce

It's ancient but it's still extremely playable and hugely challenging.

I just tried this out today. I don't know any of you anymore. Juno First at least has a scoring system (and lots of olde time twitch dodging. and flashing colors).
Yeah, this has a lot to do with availability. Section Z and Star Force both have home ports. Then again, Sexy Parodius has nice ports readily available, and it lost against Blazing Star, which is not so readily available.

Star Force +1

Not thrilled at the prospect of playing any of the choices though.

request for Edge/DJI:

should Star Force win, could you please NOT allow autofire?

Why am I asking here. Well because I think it would ruin this game in particular for a large part.
The ONLY power up in this game is there to give you just that what autofire does: increase the shot rate! It would be like allowing a cheat to almost fully power up at the start (though getting the powerup would increase shot rate even further). Not to mention it takes away a lot from the strategic need to trigger the powerups and capture them, taking away from the experience as meant.
Also it makes this game REALLY considerably easier!

People should not complain about sore thumbs and stuff here as just pressing the shot key allows automatic (though slower shot rate) fire. If people want to have highter shot rate they should get the powerup or mash the button a bit faster!

Then the game was poorly designed. Disqualify.

Then we'd have to skip Retro Week. Autofire gives considerable advantages in all old-school games.

No that's why power ups are called powerUPs!

Or just disallow autofire and play like it was meant.

XBOX's Tecmo collection does NOT allow one to disable auto-fire. Super Laydock's suggestion, while otherwise well motivated, does not seem ideal, since it will disqualify some people's scores (including mine).

Yes, most people here have an aversion to MAME, but I don't think the votes are going the way they are based solely on port availability (or lack thereof). On the one hand, it's more fair to select a game which the most number of people can play, but is it really worth it if we'd all rather be playing something else?

Besides, just because a game is ported, it doesn't mean that many people on the board actually own a copy (or have sufficient time to get a copy before the competition starts). It will be ironic if the vast majority of scores come in from MAME players (mine will be).

On a side note, I played Juno First a little bit more today (I played each of the games for about 5 minutes each yesterday before voting). I might actually play this one more in the future, even if it's not the winner (which it won't be).

JF's scoring system is pretty cool. If you just passively dodge for about 20 seconds you can get the pod. Shoot it open, collect the human figure and blast everything for increasing bonuses during its given ~10 seconds of invincibility. Gets pretty hard quickly, since there will get to be a surprising amount of bullets and enemies.

In Star Force it looks like you just "blast shit." Neat! :P

Now there's a point.
Are the other arcade ports similar in nature?

The X68000 port of Star Force, which is what I'll be playing, appears to have built-in autofire. I don't see a way to turn it off.

Tecmo probably realized that the game sucked, and hard-coded autofire into future ports to make it suck a little bit less.

Or people could have just been more lenient with what "old-school" means. 16-bit shooters should have been allowed because it's pretty evident almost everything before then is redundant, boring fodder (no offense to those who like these games).

With all the ports around, are there any differences? Is one easier than the other? Does one have more scoring opportunities, etc?

Well, that depends!

I have never played this Xbox Tecmo collection so I can't be certain, but...

Being a none MAME enabled player the Professor might confuse the built in "auto fire" of the game itself (i.e. just push shot button and don't let go so the game fires automatically. This of course is a slower (less shots per minute) and intended autofire!) and the Mame autofire option (which emulates tapping the shot button at very high rate. This results in a much faster fireing rate than the "intended" autofire!).

As for the x68000 port, I REALLY don't believe any more than 1 person at most here having access to it, so you (being that 1 person) can have the advantage as far as I am concerned. ;)

And @Nemo: it's all been part of the evolution of the shmup genre. Since we play retro now we SHOULD be going back in the path of evolution and just play these redundant, boring (simple and slow) games.
It's part of the deal in this tournament. Retro fans play new stuff and lovers of modern stuff play retro stuff!

I chose Star Force.

My old shooting partner KAC used to get to Infinity Stage and hold out until 6mil. Its a difficult game.

Guilty as charged. I thought you meant by "auto-fire" just that there is a continuous shot. The shot rate when holding down at the start is pretty slow, but it increases when you dock Purser.

My kitchen sink is clogged, so I'm going to get a late start at practicing this one.
