PCE Non SHMUP must-haves

Post by SheSaidDutch »

Ok since I've had the PCE SHMUPS topic, I've been thinking also of non Smups for this wonderful little system (I was looking at the genesis must haves)

River City Ransom (anyone got any screens to this, I haven't seen a single screenshot
RIOT ZONE *beat em up*
Double Dragon 2 *beat em up*
Kaze Kiri *supposed to be similar to Shinobi* and hailed as one of the best PCE games apparently*
Dacula X *Supposed to be the best classic Castlevania*
Blood Gear *Fighter*
Algunos *Fighter*
ASUKA 120% BURNING FEST *Fighter*
Flash Hiders *Fighter*
Galaxy Deka Detective Gayvan
IGA NINDEN GAIOU (NICHIBUTSU) I dont think I have the full name etc
KABUKI ITOURYOUDAN *Fighter*
Shubibinman 1-3 (Shockman) PCE answer to megaman
Red Alert*like Ikari Warriors,rambo3 etc*

Shubibinman 1-3
I played 3. Hated it.

PCE non shmup must haves:

Bomberman 93
Be Ball

edit: forgot boxyboy

Do not not NOT not not not buy the Outrun conversion. This could be from crappy emulation but there's this irritating out-of-key whine in the background the entire time as well as off-beat drums.

Valis 1-3!! Awesome story and artwork! Gameplay is cool too, feels kinda like a Castlevania/Ninja Gaiden hybrid at times.

edit: Added some stuff I forgot to mention last night.

- Battle Lode Runner
- Bomberman '94 (AKA Mega Bomberman on MD/Genesis, but supports 5 player)
- Buster Brothers (demo for a different version here -- I forget if the PCE version is two-player simultaneous, however)
- Gain Ground
- Tricky Kick
- Ninja Gaiden (better-colored version of the NES port)
- Ninja Spirit

And a couple games still on my to-play list but I've heard good things about:
- Splash Lake
- Travel Epule

(I didn't realize Double Dragon 2 was released on PCE...but I enjoyed it immensely on the NES.)

^^Kicle Cubicle was released for NES, but I don't believe it was every out for PCE/TG16.

Similar games to Kickle Cubicle are:
Tricky Kick
Be Ball

both are good action/puzzle games.

Well some of those I've mentioned are CDROM based,

Double Dragon 2 PCE level wise It's supposed to be very simliar to the Nes game 8)

btw Neon Isn't the outrun conversion based onthe Master System version?

DD2 is ok, but still not as good as the nes one. Pick it up only if you can get it cheep. Neutopia 2 is a decent zelda clone, I would also recomend the dungeon explorer games.

If I read correctly nobody mentioned the Bonk/ PC Genjin games!
True masterpieces and still worth playing in their first incarnation (as opposed to the Cube/PS2 remakes).

And I second the Parasol Stars vote from Bloodflowers, another great game in the series.

How is Bravoman?

I've never played a TG-16/PC Engine game in my entire life, don't intend to either. Maybe if all of it was super cheap and I had time on my side, tho.

Yes. Adventure Island/Dragon's Curse is a must have. Oh. You were talking about the other Adventure Island.

Seriously, I love the Adventure Island games, though. However, the Adventure Island series is called Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Shima in Japanese while Dragon's Curse is called "Adventure Island" in English romanji. The New Adventure Island game for the TG-16 is called Takahashi Meijin no Shin Bouken Shima in Japan.

Also, almost all of the Wonder Boy series is on the PC Engine/TG-16 in some form, even Wonder Boy in Monster Land. All of them except Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (the real Wonder Boy III, though this one is just called Monster Lair for the US version) have changed names, plot, and graphics, though.

Another game I recommend is Splatterhouse. That game is a simple walk forward and beat up enemies platformer, but it's just so much fun, especially when you pick up a weapon.

TG-16 is also a great place for Pinball fans with the Alien and Devil's Crush pinball games.

How is the TG-16 Shinobi? I tried it out and it seemed good, but I don't like to get too far in games when playing on roms.

I definatly third the recommendation of Parasol Stars, especially if you like Bubble Bobble style games.

RCR - is the same as the Nes version, don't waste your money.
Riot Zone - a decent Beump, nothing special.
Double Dragon 2 - worse than the Nes version, music is horrid, but it does have cinemas and bigger sprites.
Kaze Kiri - has an amazing package, but its essentially a really cool Kung Fu, personally I really dig it, but a lot of people find it too empty.
Rondo of Blood - Best game on the platform.
Blood Gear - an Action/Rpg, not a fighter. Good game.
Algunos - lame.
Asuka 120% - mediocre.
Flash Hiders - Okay if you really like fighters.
Galaxy Deka Detective Gayvan - ?
IGA NINDEN GAIOU - Cool ninja platformer weighed down by excessive dialogue scenes.
Shubibinman 1-3 - 1 sucks, 2 is the best in the series, and 3 is fun but a bit unfocused. None are on the same level as Mega Man.
Red Alert - Same as Last Alert (the US version), fun overheard shooter with hilarious dilaogue that makes it a necessity to play the US version.

Add (off the top of my head):
Gradius II
Fausette Amour
Ys 1-4
Xak I&II
Dragon Slayer
Nexzr
Beyond Shadowgate
Spriggan
Dungeon Explorer 2
Download 2

Blood Gear *Fighter*
Algunos *Fighter*
Blood Gear is a an action game... decent, but not a musthave. Algunos AFAIK is an RPG.
IGA NINDEN GAIOU (NICHIBUTSU) I dont think I have the full name etc
Iga Ninden Gaou (no i). I've actually got one for sale if you want.
Shubibinman 1-3 (Shockman) PCE answer to megaman
1 is crap, 2 is okay, 3 is great. Just my opinions. I see some people think differently here.

My additions:
Pop 'n' Magic
Fray CD

PCE Shinobi is way better than the SMS version. Though the collision detection is a bit odd.

I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend Space Harrier. It's not as close to the arcade as the DC, 32X or Saturn versions, but it is a fine port and, if you plan of getting Turbo Express, this game will probably come in handy.

I'll stick with the DC version on Shenmue really

from pcengine.com

Algunos is a less-known game, even among radical PC-ENGINE fans, who usually think this is an RPG or a platform game.

the screens are of a fighting game

Ok, but you'll miss running on the ground and shooting things like you could in the arcade. While it's minor since you can still shoot stuff on the ground when slightly above it, the 32X, Saturn, and DC versions (even Shenmue II) have a glitch where the hit detection doesn't work properly when running on the ground.

Fray was released on PC-Engine?

It's a big classic on the MSX... yes, it deserved a PC-Engine release, more than in any other system (Except the MSX :D).

I fourth the Parasol Stars recommendation. Awesome game, you can't go wrong with it.

Valis 1 isn't all that hot IMO. But Valis 2 is very good. Never played Valis 3.

Bravoman is kind of boring..... I didn't play it too much, exactly because I got bored to quickly :)

Valis 1 PCE is probably a lot better than the NES and MSX ones, though. The NES one was way too non linear and confusing and the MSX one suffers from having a weapon that's too short and seemingly poor hit detection. Valis 4 is on PCE too, but I'm not sure how good it is. It has a different main heroine than the others.

Valis 4 is so boring, I found the level design to be putrid. IMO, I'd rank the Valis games from best to worst: 3,2,1,4. If you only get one Valis game, get 3, it even has a bit of Castlevania influence. As far as the best music though, that goes to part 2.

too bad the sprites in the nec versions of every wonder boy are changed for the worse, the worst offender being monster land (forgot the PCE name). the master system versions are better if you ask me.
i also have problems with shinobi:
-missing mission 2
-no bonus stages
-and worst of all: no close attack, which means you can't get the 20000 bonus except by not attacking at all.

as i said in the other thread, try spash lake, it's plenty of fun in 2P coop. nectaris/militay madness too, very simple but very deep. my favourite strat game, i must have logged like 200 hours adding all versions (why did the rumoured gba version never come out..)

I've played Valis 1 on PCE.

You are too kind with Valis 1 on MSX. It doesn't "suffer" from anything, it's just plain bad... it's horrible, everything on screen is flasing, you most of the time can't see a thing. The frame rate is pathetic. It's also MORE confusing than the NES one IMO :D

Strange... I literally popped this in a few hours ago to play through it again, as I've not touched it since I first played it the day it came out.

Indeed, they are right. Guess I should've looked at the back of that flyer.
Fray was released on PC-Engine?
Indeed it was. Damn good game... better than the other Xak's IMHO.
