Movies that could be made into shmups
Some of my favorite movies features planes or ships dogfighting, and sometimes I go in my head, "Man that movie would make an awesome shmup!" Anyway, here's my picks:
Star Wars:
Pretty obvious one here, as there's tons of space battles going on and there's enough ships for player and enemy ship varity. Imagine that final scene in A New Hope where Luke shoots those torpedoes into the vent, as a final boss attack! You have to guide Luke's ship (or whoever you choose) through the spam the vent throws at you. The player would defintely have access to a nice set of ships. I'd imagine the X-Wing being well balanced, the A-Wing being quick but lacking firepower, the Y-Wing having the best bomb, and the Millenum Falcon having the best firepower but it's slow and big. TIE Fighters make perfect popcorn enemies, and those Imperial Shuttles would make good powerup carriers.
Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow:
Okay, so we have something like this already, it's called Strikers 1945. It'd still be fun to blast those big robots with a suped up Mustang, right?
Back to the Future:
The Deloran can already fly, so why not give it guns and have Marty and Doc travel through time and chase after their nemises Biff. I like time travel shmups because of the tour of time you get to experience.

As much as I'd love to see some sort of Star Wars shmup (based on the original trilogy, of course) I think it was probably already better represented by X-Wing and TIE Fighter. Which need modern remakes that reliably work under Windows XP, use my joystick, and include some of the less retarded features from the newer games like X-Wing Alliance while hopefully retaining some of the classic missions.

True that. And Rouge Squadron for N64 wasn't too bad, except the mission objectives got on my nerves sometimes.nZero wrote:As much as I'd love to see some sort of Star Wars shmup (based on the original trilogy, of course) I think it was probably already better represented by X-Wing and TIE Fighter. A shmup would still be nice.

That one was sort of already done, though not very well. The NES Last Starfighter was just a port of Uridium with a different name.Kiken wrote:C'mon, folks... THE LAST STARFIGHTER!
Not shmups, but Star Raiders II for the Atari XL/XE computers and Solaris for the 2600 were both planned to be Last Starfighter games at some point. They had fairly complete prototypes in their Last Starfighter form. The XL/XE game bared more of a resembalance to Last Starfighter, though.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

A Cave shmup would probably do it more justice than that NES one. They need the classic "It'll be a slaughter! That's the spirit! No...my slaughter!" dialogue in there. Some really amazing special effects would have to be done for the bomber attack, which would be the "Death Blossom".BrianC wrote:That one was sort of already done, though not very well. The first loop could end similarly to the movie, with a 2nd loop possible if you meet certain conditions. Xur could return later as the true final boss- after you fight the Ko-Dan flagship once more, it would transform into something more badass or shoot out Xur's escape pod resulting in a Battle Garegga style fight. One of the later stages could be the Zandozan assassins' homeworld, with Zandozan infantry and jetpack troops keeping guard. The assassin who tried to kill Alex in the movie could return as a boss.
edit: I just realized this was my 573rd post. KO-NA-MI.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Debbie does Dallas -- a fine idea for a shmup game... ^_~
One just can see Debbie firing her huge "milky" guns and the enemies sighing in ecstasy as they die & wither away (made even more dramatic with the pacing presented in slow motion)...what kind of milk is in them "big guns" anyways? Could it be scientifically and genetically enhanced milk with secret properties added to kill her enemies? And does Debbie have other hidden WMDs ("weapons of mass destruction") that we should know about? ^_~GaijinPunch wrote:Debbie Does Dallas (use your imagination)

Lord Kril: Damage report!
Kodan Officer: Guidance system out. Auxiliary steering out.
Lord Kril: Divert! Divert!
Kodan Officer: She won't answer the helm! We're locked into the moon's gravitational pull. What do we do?
[sound of Lord Kril's eyepiece swinging over left eye]
Lord Kril: We die.
Also:
I don't know if it uses the license or just happens to have the same title. Shooters have gone through pretty much every permutation of adding prefixes and suffixes to the word "gun"

If I'm not mistaking this movie was actually made after a game called Crimson Skies High Road To Revenge.J-Manic wrote:Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Not really a 2D shmup though.
I did watch it and it made me think of the game quite a bit.Super Laydock wrote:seeing this thread just made me remember that Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was on tv tonight...
I thought it was a bit cheesy at times but overall not a bad movie.
Liking the game does help liking the movie I think.
