Gradius in Yu-Gi-Oh?

Forgive me if someone else mentioned this sometime before I got here (not to mention that I introduced a Yu-Gi-Oh reference to this forum), but I found this kind of interesting...while flipping through the channels some time back I happened upon an episode of the "Yu-Gi-Oh" cartoon: I didn't plan to stay more than a few moments, but I stopped myself as I heard one of the characters announce that he was using a card/creature thingy that he called "Gradius Fighter." Aside from the fact that he pronounced it "Gray-dee-us," I wondered if it could be what I thought it was...sure enough, when he played the card a familiar-looking two-pronged spaceship appeared on the playing field. A minute later he used another card called "Gradius Option," which allowed him to create another ship just like the first one, with all its weapons.

I Googled around looking for an episode screenshot, but was even more surprised to find that apparently both cards are actually available in the real-life Yu-Gi-Oh game:

Apparently there's also a "cyclone laser" enhancement that can be added to the Gradius ship (this card's apparently in German though):

I guess that since Konami makes a bunch of the Yu-Gi-Oh video games they're free to inject their own stuff into it if they please....I just wondered if anyone else had seen this, since it wasn't mentioned in the "Guest Starring" section of the Gradius Base, or anywhere else I could find offhand.

Yeah, I saw that episode. I thought it was pretty sweet, although it would have been cooler if he had referred to it as the Vic Viper.

About the pronunciation, isn't that correct? That's how I say it, and I've never heard anyone else pronounce it differently.

Grah-dee-us. It's like the Engrish-ified version of Latin for sword, gladius.

Meh, it's pronounced both GRAH-dee-us and GRAY-dee-us depending on the game. I'm more curious how Darius should be pronounced. DA-ree-us like the kana? DAY-ree-us? da-RY-us like the king?

Anyway, the card is called the Vic Viper (maybe with a title) in Japan. Looks like they messed up the translation again.

When I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh, I tried so hard to build a Gradius deck but to no avail. It was way too difficult to put out all the cards necessary to win (and of course if Gradius got destroyed, your options went with it). If would have been nice to see Konami come out with other videogame based cards for the game though.

I haven't kept up with the game in about a year, but all cards are created by Konami for Japan, and then a select few are filtered to outside countries. From what I skimmed at Pojo.com, it looks like all of the related cards are in circulation, enough to build a Gradius themed deck. This is just proof that 5,000 years ago back in ancient Egypt, the Vic Viper was still saving the world from impending doom. :^)

Somehow, I don't like how they drew both Koitsu and Aitsu on the cards...they both look like fatasses.

On another note, I just realized that Gradius can equip FOUR Gradius's Option cards o_O (Hell, I have the cards themselves, but I only keep it because..well...it's Gradius, Koitsu and Aitsu!)

Da-rye-us. At least according to the japanese kana spelling.

There is also 2 more gradius and paradous cards out there.
One is the moai from easter island
Another is one of those bald eagles with a red-white-and blue cap from paradous. Seen both of them but dont have any pics sorry.

I could never understand that goofy show...everybody is so serious about card battling, it's crazy!! They're fighting with pieces of cardboard!

Beyblade is worse though, they're fighting with TOPS!!!

The show, specifically the NA release of it that skips a significant number of episodes from the original anime, is deliberately taking advantage of the card-collecting aspect of the manga... the manga is significantly better because it focuses on a lot of different games and strategy... I find the popularity of Yugi in the US to be an embarrassment, considering how much has been left out/ignored entirely.

Actually, there were two Yugi-Ou anime series, done by different studios (the second series began directly at the events of manga vol.

. 4Kids only got rights to the second series. We shall ignore their lack of wisdom in thinking they had a good chance of viably turning a meant-for-teens series into a targeted-at-7+ series...I don't think they even took lessons from Gargoyles or Batman...

The large focus on the Magic & Wizards motif can be laid (initially) at the feet of the fans, who flat-out adored Takahashi-san's tanget of M:TG. I find it interesting that in the series, one's deck is kind of like one's Stand. As in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure--one of Takahashi's favorite manga...

Of course, the studio that did the second series focussed on Magic & Wizards even further...probably with prodding from Konami. How else to explain the apperance of the Vic Viper card?

If the most recent GBA game is anything to go by (I have no use for the physical game; for that milieu, I favor M:TG), we've also got several other such Gradius referents--Crystal Core, Covered Core, Boss Rush (as long as it's active, a destroyed Big Core or B.E.S.--Bacterion Empire Ship?--is instantly replaced by another), and Stage Select (whatever THAT is).

On the pronunciation, whether or not it's a misspelling of the name of the Roman sword is irrelevant, as the vowel sounds are going to be the same and plenty of people (myself included) still say 'glay-dius'.

Either way, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I've heard some hilarious pronunciations of 'Moai', though!
