What other types of games do shmuppers play?

Post by professor ganson »

Since I don't have a lot of time, I prefer games that can be taken in small doses: puzzle games and pinball are my favorites.

EDIT: References to "hardcore" in the title and in this post have been removed because they were silly. (This thread is pretty old now.)

Maybe this should be a poll?

Outside of shmups, I like classic games like Donkey Kong, Joust, Elevator Action, etc..., back when everything was still unique. I like some puzzle games, fighting games are pretty fun too. Not much into racing games, and I have little experience in RPGs and stuff like that. Maybe I like them, I just don't have much experience in that area. I don't really like sports games much either.

I hardly play anything other than shmups, but before I became a shmup convert, I was big into JRPGs (hardly play those anymore, don't have enough contiguous free time for long gaming sessions).

I guess my second favourite genre of video games would be puzzle games. My favourite puzzle series is Puyo puyo, nobody I know can beat me at it consistently. I'm decently good at Puzzle Fighter and Puzzle Bobble, and I've also taken a liking to Mr. Driller.

After that I'll take 2D platformers such as Megaman and Castlevania.

edit: oh yeah, put 2D run & gun ahead of puzzle games, I kind of lump them in with pure shmups...

I play a little bit of everything. I love puzzlers, music games, shmups, classic arcade games, pinball games, RPGs, action RPGs, SRPGs, strategy games, platformers, beat 'em ups, FPSs, fighters, action games, run 'n guns, other shooters, lightgun games, and even sports games, especially the arcade like ones. I even like the GG Rayearth 2, which is like a beefed up version of the Chao Adventure VMU game.

iatneH, I actually know someone I have been talking to online who may be able to beat you at Puyo Puyo, or at least compete on your skill level. He's wicked good at the game and makes some insane combos. He made some insane scores in Puyo Puyo Tsuu PC too. I tried playing against him in emulation (SNES Super Puyo Puyo Tsu Remix, I have the actual game now) and he beat me in a few seconds. Granted, I'm not very good at the games, though I do love them.

One of my favorite sports games is Nintendo World Cup. It's so much fun ordering your helpers to tackle other players and being able to stun players on the other team with the ball.

I'm hardly hardcore in any sense of the word, but before I began shmupping to any measurable extent I was into 2D fighting games...I wasn't any better at those than I am at shmups, but I guess I'm just drawn to dying genres lately, heh. Before that I played a lot of RPGs, with some platformers and smidgens of other things thrown in all along the way.

I dunno if I'm hardcore enough to comment, but I play everything except RPG's...perhaps it's ignorant to write off an entire genre, but I like action, not storytelling in videogames.

I really only play japanese RPGs, strategy games, and shmups. I'm currently enjoying Dragon Quest VIII (JP PS2), Galaxy Angel: Moonlit Lovers (JP PS2), Blast Wind (JP Saturn), and Soukyugurentai (JP Saturn), to give you some idea of my play roster. :D

Aside from shmups, I play mainly play RPGs, puzzle games, and 2D platformers, including run 'n' gun games. I also have a soft spot for pinball games, both real and video game versions, and I've been developing an interest in fighting games as of late.

I think sports games and FPSs are the only genres I specifically shy away from. But even then there are exceptions, I've been known to enjoy some FPS deathmatches at friends' houses and I like extreme sports games.

Hmm...I play Japanese street racing games (Initial D, Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune), light gun games, and rhythm action games (especially Para Para Paradise and Beatmania IIDX).

That's me! :)

I can't say there's a genre I completely dislike. While I don't like RPGs, I love Shining Force. I don't like Flight Sims, but I love Knights of the Sky. I don't like Strategy Games, but I love Fragille Allegiance. :)
I am no big fan of FPSes either... but I like a DEATHmatch or 2 of Quake 3 sometimes.

But the games I play most are action games for sure.

I am a sucker for puzzle games. All kind of puzzle games, be it the fast ones (Puyo Puyo being the best of all), or the more "think slowly" , like Adventures of Lolo.

And I like platform games, but I prefer the ones with few levels and straight action. Give me the 6 levels of Sonic anyday against the 100+ levels of Super Mario World :D. ( I enjoy the Mario games too :D)

And I like Run'n'Guns , though I usually put them together with Platform games. Gunstar Heroes is awesome!

Those are the genres I play the most. I do like some sports games, I am the KING in Winning Eleven 2002, and I am trying to get good at Winning Eleven 7 (Still haven't played 8 yet). But that's the kind of game I usually play with friends. (At least after I master the CPU :D)

And Fighting games are great with lots of people around. No one can beat me on Bloody Roar 2! :D

Well.. I guess I play a little of everything in the end :D

There are fantastic games from every genre. To go against the standard here, I like RPG's quite a bit. Mostly old ones because I don't really like story as much as exploration and number crunching.

For the most part, during my non-shmup sessions, I usually play a lot of racing games because I like to go fast as hell, RPGs because somehow I have a fetish for leveling up characters, and reading the storyline,

but most of all, I almos always play rhythm games (and Bemani...Bemani should damn well be worthy enough to have its own genre.) or at least ANYTHING along the lines of that...well..because it's simply damn addictive.

did you try Magical Drop 3? I don´t want to argue it´s better than Puyo Puyo, but I´m pretty sure it´s faster. Puyo Puyo is probably more intelligent, though. Mr. Driller is also pretty competitive in that respect. The time attack mode of Bejeweled 2 can also get rather hectic.

I only like fast, intense games, be that shmups, racing, puzzling, bemani or sometimes even fps. I agree about the storytelling, there are much better stories in books and films than there are in videogames.

I like just about all kinds of 2d action games, but sports. I like 3d games but mostly stuff that has similar play styles to older 2d stuff. I'm not real into FPS but I'll still play them if they're my type. Halo's good (to risk sounding like a cliche) my all time favorite is probably Blood. I'm not the biggest RPG fan, but I love the 8-16bit Phantasy Star games as well as most older rpgs and any pre VII Final Fantasies . I like the Lunar games and Xenogears for the ps and while I never really could get into strategy games I recently picked up Disgaea and Phantom Brave, and from what little I've played of them I think I'm going to like them. I'm mostly into action games though. I guess to sum up you could say my gaming tastes run parallel to my musical tastes in the sense that I just like what I like. Here's a short list of games that I really dig above all others hopefully it will give you a better idea of what I mean.

Metal Gear Solid
Chrono Trigger
Zelda ALTTP
Super Mario World
Ninja Gaiden
Act Raiser
Castlevania SOTN
Blaster Master
Ys 1&2
Button masher extrordinaire

While I particularly enjoy racing games along with my shoot'em ups, my gaming library spans a large variety of genres and interesting games.

A small selection of my non-shooting faves:
Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Der Langrisser
Bangai-O (I think it's pretty shooty, but for the sake of argument...)

Really only scratching the surface, there's just so much good stuff out there!

2D fighters, beat em ups, and run-and-guns(Metal Slug etc) mostly, since these are closest to shmups in terms of gameplay style (quick and enjoyable).

But I also enjoy the occasional long strategy/RPGs like the Langrisser series.

No RPGs for me too. I've pretty much written off that genre in the past few years. RPGs are one the most tedious genres in gaming IMHO.

I'm a huge Phantasy Star Online whore though, but that's not a real RPG.

To be honest though, I'd rather take real-time RPGs anyday than turn-based ones..

After shooters, I love Platformers, Beumps, and Action/Rpgs. Basically anything 2D is fun by me, but I can enjoy just about any genre but racing games and FPS.

Platformers, puzzlers, racers mostly.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I play mostly arcade games or arcade-style games, and 2D-style platformers. Sometimes I'll fire up Mr. Driller on the PS1, or play arkanoid-style games on MAME for hours at a time. beatmaniaIIDX, DDR, and pop'n music are always welcome...even 5key beatmania gets it's share of play. I enjoy the little session of Sonic 3, NiGHTS, or Klonoa as well from time to time...I used to play RPGs almost exclusively, but nowadays I don't even play them at all. -_-;

Magical Drop 3 is a puzzle game on the Neo-Geo, developed by Data East.

This was all covered in some other threads, including the "Mainstream Gaming" one...
I like all kinds of stuff. I'am a "hardcore gamer" period. Hardcore in the sense that I take my gaming seriously, and I may spend more money on it than "normal people" do. I also MAKE time to play, rather than simply playing when bored, etc. Kinda pretty much, an addiction if you will?

I enjoy the following:
Sports... (mostly old ones like Madden 93 on the Genesis, as well as World Class Baseball on the TG-16)
Golf! I've enjoyed video golf games since "Golf" on the Atari VCS/2600.(Swing Away Golf,OutLaw Golf2, Neo TurfMasters)
Racing...everything from Pole Position to OutRun to Wipeout.
Run n Guns...Metal Slug,Contra, Gunstar Heroes, etc.
RPG's...now, pretty much action styled and medieval like. (Kings Field,Summoner) I hate Final Fantasy "Soap Opera's"!!!
FPS...y'know the type. Red Faction,Halo,TimeSplitters, 007, etc,etc.
Pinball...Last Gladiators, Necronomicon,Dragons Fury, etc.
Beat m Ups... Streets of Rage, Sengoku3, Final Fight, etc.
I even like some "puzzle" games like Colums, BomberMan, and Ikaruga, etc, etc.

Whatever I feel like I guess...

Define hardcore shmupper ;-)

I tend to play modern games too, online with Xbox Live. The two that have proved to be real timesinks are Midnight Club 2, and Rainbow Six 3 (and sequel) - these games have both gone through periods where I'd throw 4 or 5 hours every day into them for months.

My other vice is pinball - the real ones rather than video. I spend more time restoring them than actually playing, but there's something reassuringly random about them - they'll always surprise you.

I love good RPGs (ie Fallout or Morrowind... games that really force you to play a role and have far, far more gameplay than plot). Linear adventure games with turn-based combat systems (ie 95% of console RPGs) don't do much for me.

As for other genres... I like 'em all. I'm not a huge fan of sports games, but I'll still pick one up on occasion.

2d all the way! and platformers are the shit! if i ever catch myself engrossed in a 3d platformer, i'll kill myself. strangely, i'm on a bit of a UT kick atm :P stemmin' from my doom2 roots, like half my life ago. (word!) a bit of online FPSing always gets the blood pumping. capture the flag with the enhanced shock rifles is fun beyond words... just wish i didn't suck so much, ha. i must say, a FPS deathmatch separates the men from the boys. in my case, it takes a strong stomach to stay in an FPS deathmatch with freaks who likely haven't stopped playing them since doom2 came out. doom2 or maybe quake were the last ones I played. it's humbling and frustrating watching others own me :P

p.s. if you haven't played (2d) worms online, you haven't lived. worms 2 (and onwards with the same 2d engine, "armageddon", "world party") has to be one of if not the greatest multiplayer game ever made. worms 3d is kinda shit, it doesn't have the magic, and it has no precision. the worms2 engine allows for utter pixel-perfect precision.

p.s. I also <3 KUSOGE, hee.

I also used to play alot of PC games FPS, RPG's Fallout etc

Morrowind to me was completly lacking in any form of atmosphere and any form of entertainment. NPC's were boring

I don't consider myself a "hardcore shmupper" or "hardcore videogame player" because i usually just play when im bored. At the moment im playing maybe 3-4 hrs a week if that. I find watching TV/DVD's is a lot less stressfull these days. :)

Other genres i like though are 2D fighters and 2D platformers , i've never really got along with 3D stuff really.
