Fanmade hi-quality Gradius Remake

Post by Edge »

All Gradius and shmup fans should check out the "Nemesis" entry on the Retro Remake 2006 competition.

I just tried it out and it really looks and plays fantastic, also the music is great. :D

Very very very nice remake. And if you put it on "normal" - fucking hard.

Although, the speed-up doesn't take enough effect. I need like 5 of them to be at the right speed.

Great stuff.

Love what they did to the soundtrack. :D

And yeah, the Speed Ups need to be optimised a little.

I don't think my video card is strong enough to run this game (old integrated everything PC, shucks on Intel Celeron, every other necessity is ok) guess I'll just stick with the tried and true original game.

This is fantastic. Looks and sounds brilliant (I love what they've done to the 2nd level's music in particular), and it plays wonderfully. I'm always a bit skeptical of remakes, but this was definitely a worthwhile venture. Major kudos to all involved.

This game has some things very right and very wrong.

- Shooting the cheerios from the Moai heads does NOT give you points.
- Shooting the little dots in level 2 *does* give you points.
- Level 2 has a scoring bug which allows you to play forever and keep accumulating large amounts of point due to the purple dots giving your points. When I passed level 2, I had over 600,000.
- The little circle ambush at the end of level 2 is not right. As they are fading in, they should not be able to collide with you - but they do, and it makes it very frustrating. Though there is a place to sit on the screen to get through it if you have double.
- The enemy rush before the Moai level boss (the big round ships that form a column) seems bugged. I'll be damned if I can kill any of them. I burned through all my credits trying to pass this because they bum rush you if you don't kill them. There is no way around them unless you have max speed.
- Hit box seems a bit big. I kept dragging my ship's ass across collision points and imploding.
- Speed speed speed. Jack up the speed-up effect.

Fun, but frustrating (wow, they got that part of gradius right ;) ).

Great music. Rapid fire would be nice too.

No longer currently available for download. Apparently 100GB of downloads in 36hrs has pretty much closed them down.

If that doesn't illustrate the world's desire for good shmups and/or retro titles, I don't know what would.

Are the publishers and copyright holders out there listening?

One other gripe is that you can't re-map your gamepad functions, which is bad news if you're using a PS2 controller as shot and missile are set to the triangle and X buttons.

Hopefully they'll correct these things in their updates.

I gotta say it seems pretty accurate. it annoys the hell outta me just like the original Gradius did. (to be fair, I never made it past the first level of this or the original. :P )

I beat it... my arms are quite sore now from all of the tensed up button mashing.

Man, the Double sure is beastly! The only time I wanted the Laser was for the Moai stage - it's your best chance against the bonus enemies just before the core boss. Unfotunately, you can't switch back and forth between the Double and Laser... once you pick one, it remains blanked out until you die.

I spent all 3 credits, and came right down to the last ship. Making a comeback is definitely very hard... even though they give you a bunch of red ships, picking up the pods without dying is a difficult task.

There are a few cheap shots the game takes at you... for example, you can no longer hide above and below the laser cage in the last level... though hanging out in the front seems to work just fine. I wouldn't recommend hiding inside the cage anywhere since it scrolls so awkwardly... you'll probably end up dead.

You also should wait for the timeout on the brain if you don't have the Double shot or missile weapons. The latch points are located so close to the terrain, you can't really get the Viper close enough safely enough to shoot them.

There seems to be multiple loops, though the difficulty hardly changed at all when I beat it. That may be because I was on the default difficulty.

A little off-topic, but this site seems to have some awesome remakes. There's a remake of the MSX version of "The Goonies", there's a remake of Wings of Fury with some awesome graphics, and some other cool stuff.

Damn, sorry to keep off-topic, but if you, like me, are a fan of Wings of Fury, DOWNLOAD THE REMAKE FROM THAT PAGE. They remade the game using 3D graphics, and made the game a lot more playable (Not because of 3D, but because the controls are now better).

Great stuff.

Thanks for the link!

In this remake,"speed-up" hasn't a problem on your premise?

I find that the ship remains slow .

@Shatterhand

Thanks for pointing out the "Goonies" remake. It's incredible how well done it is. The film is one of my sweetest childhood memories and this game is brilliant. The Nemesis remake is a lil bit too difficult for me. I remember playing it in its nemesisform on a c64 ages ago and I think there was no extra button for missiles...still really cool though, I love what they've done to the intro music. Some of the 8bit remixes are so cool, anybody listening to Slayradio sometimes?
