I know there are many examples of this. The one on my mind lately is Toei's Gaiking series from the seventies. I used to watch the English version back in the day. The fish bosses in Darius HAD to have been inspired by the Zelans' (english version name) fish spaceships in Gaiking. Also, the red power-up in R-Type sure reminds me of the Gaiking robot's "electron beam" attack (english version name), complete with a red and blue beam twisting together. This video from YouTube shows them both.

I'm aware of Super Robot Wars and Mazinger Z, and they are indeed cool. You can even play as Mazinger Z in Game Paradise. I was actually referring to games that were inspired in some way by the super robot anime (in this case, Gaiking), rather than games that are liscensed and use the actual characters/robots.Blade wrote:First...you will LOVE this forum.
Second...you will LOVE Mazinger-Z the Shmup by Banpresto.

Oh...well there's a fairly decent list of those I think.
Arrowflash was obviously inspired by Macross.
UFO Robo Dangar might be a nod to Space Runaway Ideon
Robo Aleste wasn't too bad either, although I'm not sure precisely what that might be based on.
The semi-final boss in Radiant Silvergun might be a nod to Ultraman.
And although not really a shmup, Cyberbots is yet another arcade title worth looking at.
As for Gaiking...I don't recall precisely but I think I saw a Hori Shmup a long time ago that had both a robot and ship that worked independently of eachother.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.
