Slowdown in Gradius III arcade version??!.....

Post by dave4shmups »

I finally got a hold of that Gradius III Superplay, and I've noticed a good deal of slowdown in this game. I have actually played it on the PS2 III and IV pack, and I don't remember ANY slowdown!

The PS2 III and IV pack has an option to turn the slowdown off.

that's pretty tough talk....

i think a run through the first leg of the fire level (with its screens and screens of fast moving invincible fireballs) will probably cool those jets. it definitely did it for me.

as far as i'm concerned, using the slowdown toggle, maximum extra lives, the konami code, and easy settings on the PS2 gradius III isn't cheating--it's just making the game playable.

Actually, you can adjust the "Wait Level" when you pause the game in Gradius III. You can have either major slowdown, minor slowdown, or no slowdown at all.

Dave, where did you get that superplay? I'm really interested in seeing it because this game really kicks my arse.

Here's a mame replay from marp:

(copy & paste this link as off-site linking does not work)

http://marp.retrogames.com/inp/7/3/9/vt ... _win67.zip

It needs Win67 mame: http://www.arcadeathome.com/dl.phtml?ap ... 67b.zip%7C

You'll have to find the rom but it's easily accessible on the web.

Unzip the replay into mamedir\inp

Then "mame -playback grdius3a"

The guy gets to 3-3. He clears both secret stages (Gradius 1, Lifeforce 1). He dies on the last level of the 2nd loop AND recovers. Excellent replay.

I took a bunch of screenshots last night, if I have time I'll post them.

The other romset on MARP has a player that gets to 3-1. Now that in itself is impressive. However, what makes it better is he dies in the loop 2 fire stage AND recovers. Takes like 10 extra guys, but he does it which is down right friggin incredible.

There is also a safe spot on the wall-boss in the last area. You position your nose to the left of the last moving wall and position your ship vertically in the middle background layer. Then keep shooting and wait for the boss to self-destruct. All lasers miss you, and all walker-bullets miss you as do the walls and walkers themselves.
