STGT 2k6- Week #1 Poll (Horizontal Week)

Post by Edge »

Blazing Star

Image

Classic horizontal shmup with implemented chaining. You also have a wide rang of ships to select from. So Blazing Star combines elements typical for verticals with horizontals, without becoming a manic shmup. This one is pretty score centric and offers also secret score bonusses on it's stages. So if chaining enemies is your game, you can safely vote for this one.

Cotton

Image

Straight horizontal shmup, Survival is the main objective here. Though the game offers some pretty difficult to pull of score exploits, (Max Magic Crystal collecting / miliking of enemies). And you can't maximize your score by suicides, instant respawn. So if you like a unique, straight and challenging shmup experience this is your game.

Darius Gaiden

Image

Despite from offering various secrets in the stage and the rather unusual capture system. The Darius route system offers a lot of possibilities to find the best scoring route. There will always be other possible solutions to improve your score. So this one should be your choice if you like fast paced action paired with experimenting on different scoring routes.

Sexy Parodius

Image

This game gets you the great Gradius gameplay and tosses in some scoring elements. The Twinbee like bells, which you can chain to the most delicious 10'000 point bonusses. Also this Parodius has an interesting mission system, where every single level has a submission, like killing 200 mice or collecting 300 coins. For suceeding a mission you often trigger alternative stages. If you like Gradius / Parodius or are up to enjoy an unique and score oriented game of the series this one is a must.

Super Spacefortress Macross 2

Image

This horizontal shmup is all about score, you can't lose by dying. The only way to go Game Over is if you haven't earned enough points in one stage. You play stages in a time limit and have to exploit these in the given time frame as much as possible. It offers 3 available courses to choose from with 3 stages on each. This one is the game for all score hunters who like time pressure to enhance the experience.

I'm really hoping it's Blazing Star. That's a killer game. I don't really like any of those other games either.

I'm hoping for Darius Gaiden, seeing as that's the only game on the list I own

As long as it's not Darius Gaiden or Macross 2, I'll be happy.

Interesting selection. I think Pulstar would have been a better option than Blazing Star because it has a console release. Here's hoping for Sexy Parodius or Cotton.

Did that one ever make it anyplace besides the Neo-Geo?

In any event, I figure Blazing Star got the nod because it's better for score play.

@Professor Ganson & BulletMagnet: Pulstar was never released for any non-Neo geo system. Blazing star WAS released on a home console--the Neo Geo AES (Japan only release). It was not MVS-only. For whatever weird reason, it did not get a Neo Geo CD release, though Pulstar did.

Ok, regarding the rules I'd say:

Blazing Star: Auto Fire OK
Cotton: No Auto Fire
Darius Gaiden: Auto Fire OK
Sexy Parodius: Auto Fire OK
Super Spacefortress Macross 2: Autofire OK

Well I actually think that Auto Fire in Darius Gaiden and esspecially Macross 2 give an advantage. But seeing how some people are used to play with auto fire and it isn't totally breaking the game, I'd say it's ok.

Super Spacefortress Macross 2 would be pretty painful without Autofire, my arm started to hurt from rapidly button smashing after a few tries. :P

Another question regarding Super Spacefortress Macross 2: Should we have a fixed course. Or should it be for the player to decide which course he'd like to try?

Are there restrictions on versions? IE, can you play Sexy Parodius on either the Saturn, PS, or MAME?

Yes, you can do. Until anyone of you guys knows a certain version which is significantly different and therefore can't be compared at all with the others. Like Gradius on NES and Arcade.

If you know of any issues please post here.

I agree. Some players are years ahead in Blazing Star. I'd prefer it if games were chosen that are unknown to most players.

Very few people on these boards have really good scores in Blazing star.
And playing games that are unknown to most players wouldn't be much fun, because 99% of the 'unknown' games are unknown because they're garbage.

I did not vote Blazing Star because it would be handing week 1 results to teams with 'a lot' of Blazing Star experience. As Herr Schatten said;
I agree. Some players are years ahead in Blazing Star.
= absolutely.

I didn't vote Super Spacefortress Macross 2 either, due to the fact that I wouldn't be able to get hold of it.

What kind of reasoning is that? There are lots of perfectly good hidden gems available. Just have to dig around.

In any rate, prehaps we should shortlist games before the poll is put up next time. I'm fine with whats up now but would have preferred to see something a little rarer than the venerable Blazing Star.

There's an infinite milking score bug that affects the Peplos, isn't there?

That was one of my concerns, which is why I didn't vote for it. Macross actually sounds very interesting, but I have Sexy Paro for PS1 which I haven't played for a looong while and this would be a nice excuse...

Oh, and I stickied the thread for the duration of the poll.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Yeah, so what? Just about every decent shmup has at least a few really good scores by forum members here. That's not grounds to throw out Blazing Star. And btw, some of the best players (like BBH) are not even in this contest.
I'm not very good at this game btw, but I do think it is a very good game and that's why I'd like to play it.

If this is true then we really should remove BS from the list and replace it with another choice.

Alternatively, we could just stipulate a rule where you cannot use Peplos.

If there's an infinite score bug present for one ship, it might be present in some form with the other ships as well. I remember there being an indepth discussion on the old Gamespy forums where it was stated that there may be a bug that affects the Aryustailm as well.

true, but looking at the posts above i can see it's a controversial choice that a lot of people will be unhappy with if it wins. i think we should either reject this game and choose an alternative, or scrap the whole list and start again.

It's a simple power advantage. Her rapid shot is 3 times as powerful as Windina's (the next most powerful rapid shot), and can effortlessly kill off the increasing baby swarm waves in the final boss for milking.

Aryu's method is extremely risky -- the sword is nowhere near as powerful as a volley of Peplos rapid shots, time-damage wise.

There are always going to be people that are good at some of the games, it's inevitable so I'm not worried about it.

I like the idea of getting out Blazing Star and giving it a good hammering for a week or two, whether I win or lose it's the fun of giving it a go. Also I like the idea of Sexy Parodius because I've never played it. Some people will have played Sexy P before them and will automatically have an advantage over me, but it's not worth botherng about, I'm just going to have a lot of fun playing it for a week.

I think I'm going to vote for Sexy P so long as I can get it working in Mame. I've never played it before because I didn't realise it wa an arcade game, I thought it was Saturn only. In fact, thinking about it, I suppose I'd better get them all working because I don't know which one it's going to be!

Cheers

Everyone
