Through a series of scientific experiments I have discovered the ultimate symbol of fierce competition. Prepare to tremble with fear at the logo unveiling.

I guess I'll have to whip up a logo for our team. Shouldn't be too hard given our name ;)

Well, I tinkered with a few ideas, and here's what I came up with for my team's badge...

And yes, I know animated gifs aren't allowed, but I did this anyway. Seemed fitting...

Seeing as I'm in Hawaii, I guess I should join "Fake USA" if they'll have me. That's just fucking classic!

Warning though that PSU comes out at the beginning of week 2, which might take all of my gaming time.

So, I completely changed the first post. I hope it is now easier to access all the important information and also just went with the most important infos to not supersize the post.

And I changed the threadname once again. (I hope everyone finds it)

cigsthecat wrote:I think we need team logos too. I've got a good idea for one.
Awesome! I had that in mind, but I thought it would be to bothersome for everyone so I better stayed quiet. Well I actually had flags in mind, but offcourse some teams had required fun flags. But together with the idea of fun team names it sounds great. This will help to get a more relaxed atmosphere. ;)

Now the annoying, neverending discussion about the rules:
I went with 6 Playing Weeks now and was wondering which themes I should pick. I think I am not going to use all famous companies as a stand alone week. Maybe 2 or 3.

If I had to decide now, I'd maybe go with this selection:

#1- Horizontal Week
#2- Raizing Week
#3- Retro Week
#4- Psikyo / Takumi Week (one of these two or both mixed?)
#5- Hidden Gem Week (not random company, only very underrated and pretty unknown shmups)
#6- Cave Week

I just wanted to warn you in advance before the fans of certain theme are getting upset. Or in case I missed some important theme.

EDIT:
Oh, we should decide for a size of the team logo. I say let's go with Coop's version with 200x50 that it could be used as signature.

Of course you did! It makes sense, given that I had just two hours ago covered it briefly on my site as The SHMEET, to change it! Arghahgh...you kill me, Edge.

I propose eliminating retro and horizontal week and adding two Takumi weeks to make up for this error in judgment.

Team Rusevelt

Post by DEL »

I humbly request that 1 or 2 of the UK Team 2 Players promote themselves to being members of Team 1:-

DC906270 UK (North East)
-elbarto UK (London)
-freddiebamboo UK (Glasgow)
-Leeram UK (Middlesbrough)
-ill6 Uk (London)
-jpj UK (London)

For balance and the fact we need coverage when a Player is unable to compete on a particular week, as Edge suggested.

 - Two Toaplan weeks then!
No but seriously,
Of course we all have weak spots, but this Competition can't be held on your favourites alone, or mine.
An All Round General Skill Tournament should be the idea. (Definitely incl. Horis & Retros  ).

Cut Cave from the list. Nearly everyone plays Cave here, so a bit of unfamiliar territory will be more interesting in a competition.

No Takumi. There are only two games readily available to everyone - Gigawing and Mars Matrix - which isn't much of a choice at all. I think it will be best to aim for a wide choice of games each week.

Replace with Seibu, Toaplan, Neo-Geo and/or Taito. That should level the playing field a little bit.

Yeah, I must say that as much as I like Cave games, EVERYONE plays them to death. You know it's going to be Dodonpachi anyway... the one Cave game I've not really gotten into.

Everyone plays CAVE but that sure as hell doesn't mean everyone has a half decent score in them (exmaple : GUWANGE). Save the CAVE week, drop the retro week (these scoring systems suck and come down to who plays the longest run) along with horizontal week (I don't understand this, just put in BLAZING STAR anyway). Seperate Takumi / Psykio week.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

KEEP RETRO AND HORI WEEKS IN

Post by DEL »

I agree on the multilooping retros ...BUT... there are retro games that can be competed on. Starforce for instance, its not long, just 26 short stages to reach 'Infinity Stage' and its not easy either.
I'm sure there are some other short sharp retros that will fit the bill. I'm talking 1984-1992 retro though, not prehistoric!

Plus to be fair, Horizontals other than Blazing Star would be better, due to the amount of time some people here have already spent on it.
Again, there are more Horis around than you think...(to choose from that is).

Seconded! :)

Some of the more popular games are already played to death and
very familiar territory. It's already clear who are the top players and would unfair against people playing them for the first time.

And although I'd love to compete in Giga Wing at which I am improving at a (for me) spectacular rate, having more unfamiliar /unknown games would certainly add to the fun and fairness of the competition.

Therefore I'd propose someone like our very own Postman (not on any team and thus fairly impartial) to pick a nice doujin PC shmup for the compo.
He is THE one in the know of that scene and could surely pick out a mostly unknown gem requiring not too high specs. Most everyone has a pc here so accessibility would be good too. With mostly noone knowing the game it could make up for surprising results as everyone has to learn the game from scratch and has only one week for that!

(yay, that mail worked)

Hello, folks - I wish to join Team Sweden. The people already in that team know who I am. :P

Also, how about a week for freeware or doujin shmups?
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

I think the week selection is fine for me. Twin Cobra 2 isn't made by Takumi also? So we'd have 3 Takumi games. I suck at Mars Matrix, and not very good at Gigawing (But not as bad as in Mars Matrix), but I would play any of them anyway.

I hate Raizing score system, and I am not a big fan of Cave shmups, but yet I guess that would make a good compo, because it fits for everyone.

Shame about leaving Taito out though, they have lots of cool shmups... though many of them could fit in the "Hiddem Gem Week" :)

In the horizontal week, are we considering horizontal shmups other than Gradius? There are many good horizontal shmups out there: R-Type Leo, Last Resort, Pulstar, Prehistoric Isle 1 & 2, P-47 Aces, UN Squadron, Eco Fighters, Sengoku Blade, Cotton.... and the list just keeps going on.

And I agree with Super Laydock when he says "having more unfamiliar /unknown games would certainly add to the fun and fairness of the competition. ".

And KEEP the retroweek for god's sake... are you guys afraid of big hitboxes? :)

Thanks for taking the time to make the badges, The Coop!

As for the game discussion, I just hope it doesn't turn out like this:

Week One: Ibara
Week Two: Battle Garegga
Week Three: Mars Matrix
Week Four: More Mars Matrix
Week Five: You love the Mars Matrix, don't you?
Week Six: Mars Matrix is my daddy now

I can understand if Takumi doesn't make the cut, grudgingly. They're a one series wonder with one other highlight to their name.

Psikyo is perfect for this comp. because all of their games play close enough to the same. Skills pretty easily transferable, if you've played one, or basically any shooter ever. Very short, simple scoring systems that don't require a guide (er, Raizing).

Thats why I'm voting for no popular companies in the polls. The more surprises in the listings the better. With games such as Batrider, Dodonpachi and Mars Matrix, the top players have had months/years of practice ahead of the mid and low tier players and the gap in scoires is very apparent.

With games such as XEXEX, Metal Black, Last Resort, Rayforce, Gokujyou Parodius, Tatsujin Ou!, V-Five, Raiden DX, Darius Gaiden and so on, the playing field is more level to some extent, and the scores will be more reliant on playing skill rather than experience with the game (although in some cases, experience will also factor in, but not as much as with the more popular titles).

So I suggest it again. Cut Cave, Takumi and Raizing (even I have to make that sacrifice for a balanced competition ;_; ), keep retro and horzies, add Seibu Kaihatsu, Toaplan, Taito, some Neo-Geo stuff, and others as appropriate. If you absolutely, positively must have Cave and Raizing shortlists, keep out the most popular titles like Garegga, Batrider, Donpachi and Dodonpachi, and list the more obscure stuff like Mahou Daisakusen and Feveron.

And besides, not everyone owns stuff like Border Down, Ibara, Ketsui etc. There are about 60 participants on the list, it is better to shortlist games that all 60 can acquire and play. This is a competition to display a range of playing skills across a wide selection of old and new styles. If you think retro sucks just because you don't like it or care for it, all the better to put that prejudice aside and try and compete with it.

Damn, I'm not sure what I got into here. I was thinking it was so we could clobber everyone for a few weeks apiece with said 100+ hours of experience.

surely the greek alphabet has 24 letters? have you reached the Infinity stage? The game gets hard after 12 stages or so and i've never seen anyone get far past that. Then again being from the midlands i only know about 2 people who've ever played this game, including me.

I think we should have a Cave week as their games are so popular, but maybe instead of just going for score on one game somebody could produce a few mini-challenges to make a fair contest, like say a high score contest for the first level of Guwange or Progear (I'm sure somebody could think of a more entertaining idea than that, that was just off the top of my head.) Also i like Undamned's recent idea of playing Dragon Breed without shooting, that would make a nice little challenge, as long as everyone agreed not to cheat.

Might it be possible for us to have private team discussion areas for strategy discussion/dissing other teams?
