I was playing Giga Wing last night, and I've finally discovered where to grab that huge medal, which is considered a rare item in the game. As far as I know, this medal is only obtainable in one stage; the stage with the floating islands. I was pretty shocked when that thing popped up at me too. Actually, I think it was about 6 or 7 of them at the same time (I grabbed about 4).

Anyway, it's a very cool thing for a shmup to have a "rare" item. I was wondering if there are any other shmups out there that have hidden or rare items like in Giga Wing.

There's that 1up from the large midboss ship in Ketsui stage 3. Only if you destroy ALL the turrets before sinking the ship (and without bombing) will you see it. Same goes for the enemy Tiger Schwert and Panzer Jager in stage 5, which also must be destroyed without bombs.
This topic brought to mind the "Gemheads" in Gunbird 2.
..I don't know if that counts as rare, or simply hidden?
Anyway, they sure are a cool addition to the gameplay!
And in that regard; we all can't forget Randar from Zanac!

I've goten this to happen in GW as well but I don't know what I did to trigger it.Does anyone know how to make it happen?
In Vulgus I got the 10'000 point star 4 times in a single area one time. By grabbing the enemy enhancers very quickly
Another cool hidden item I found was in a non-shmup Rainbow Islands. One time in the secound island it just started raining 10'000 point money bags for no aparrent reason it did this for a good minute then stopped I even watched a Super Play of this game once and the person doing the Super Play didn't even do it, very odd.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

In the stage where you start flying over those floating islands, there is a red marble ball thing you have to shoot in order to release those giant medals. The ball appears after you get passed the floating islands, before you reach the boss. It's kinda hard to spot with all the crazy shit that's going on, so keep an eye out for it. It'll be on the right hand side of the screen. That's where it was when I shot it.

The Red Lamp
This causes at least 5 huge money bags to fall from the sky in Rainbow Islands, other than that I've never seen it rain more than 5 money bags.

Miclus.
Completely random in Raiden I and II.
In Raiden DX, pick up 3x Medals at maximum value and the next 'Medal' to be uncovered wil be a Miclus instead.
In Raiden Fighters series, hovering over particular spots in the stages, or triggering certain events will uncover Miclii that drop 10x Medals, and are also worth points in their own right.
I can't believe that nobody has mentioned the Yashichi yet. Capcom's staple hidden and rare point item in loads of their games. See also: barrels, the mech from Side Arms, cows, and SonSon.
Smraedis wrote:Also, I didn't know about the miclii being after evey 3 medals on Raiden DX, is the same true with the other medals being every 3 taken at 500 pts?
You have to destroy the boxes at certain "lines" in the screen to get the blue medals.

You have to destroy the boxes at certain "lines" in the screen to get the blue medals.
That is interesting, but they don't make such a big change with scoring..
I nominate not the 1UP and 2UP items in Shienryu, but the super P items that give you a shield. The sound when you get hit when you are wearing the shield is awesome. You will live offcourse

Naah, Miclii and boss speedkills are far more important to your score. The blue Medals do add to end of stage bonuses, but unless you know how to uncover a lot of them, they aren't really worth sniffing out.
