Shikigami no Shiro III
Double Post but...seems to have the max multiplier as the new strategic element, in the sense that suicides (and thus extra bombs/max multiplier stocks) are to be dosed properly...suicide to get extra stock/score more/suicide more. Uhm, Raizing anyone?

It would certainly seem that way. Guess we'll just have to see whether strategic suicides are a factor in high scoring runs, or if the Max Tension items are given out regularly enough to negate this kind of strategy.
The Max Tension system would certainly help players get back up to maximum value coins after death.

I can count 2 extends and 557m at the end of the stage...isn't it like the first chapter (150M and every 300M but with more scoring opportunities?)

The extends are at 200,000,000-->600,000,000-->every 400,000,000 thereafter. The best scores right now are at around 8 billion, so 20 extends at least w/o miss.
I have a feeling the suicide play in Shikigami III will distinguish itself from Garegga-Ibara, much like the difference in chaining between Dodonpachi and Ikaruga. I'm all for it. The port must be announced soon, damn it! :)

Uhm, i suppose that final runs in the competitions will be somewhere in the 10B range and feature some insane perfomances of squeezing everypoint--> getting more extends and max tension meters--> increase score and loop this cycle. Simple extra mechanic for big change of gameplay, bravo to Alfa System. Shame the port will have to wait a bit...

I couldn't get the video to work on my comp, so I couldn't see if this was the case or not...did anyone notice whether or not you could stock more than 3 lives in this game? IIRC, in the first 2 games you could never have more than 3 lives total, if you got an extend without having lost a life it pretty much went wasted...
No, the limit is still three lives and, if i get it right, five bombs.

Thanks. Hmm, if this's the case then suiciding for score will have to be a pretty regular occurrence, since you can't stockpile lives. I wonder if the game's rank makes it something of a requirement just to finish the game, a la Garegga, or if it's more like Bakraid, where you don't need to worry about it too much unless you're playing for score, as opposed to just survival.
I also wonder if the previous Shikis' coin value system is still here...IIRC as you collected more coins without dying you could gradually increase their value up to 10,000 points apiece...when you died it was reset. I wonder, if suiciding is required for high scores here, if this is still the case.

The games have no rank, but extra enemies (well, light rank in the first chapter). The more stuff you destroy, the more it appears on screen (Dangun, Mars Matrix, Ikaruga, etc). Also, the thing you point out about coins is rather interesting: if coins get resetted as well, suicides become even trickier to handle (i.e. the wrong suicide to restock won't give you a good occasion for the x8 max, you don't score enough to extend again, etc. etc. ). This game seems to imply much more awesomeness than it seems, i'd say.BulletMagnet wrote:Thanks. Hmm, to my ears this sounds good, since less-skilled players like myself should be able to just concentrate at first on figuring out how to survive, and then from there we can ease into sacrificing some bombs/lives for the sake of score, a la Bakraid. Here's hoping for a PS2 port!Randorama wrote:The games have no rank, but extra enemies (well, light rank in the first chapter). No need to hope, honestly, i can't see how this game can fail ( i think it's doing well already, should check the arcadia charts), as it is a pretty powerful franchise and seems to make a ductile system even more ductile... We will need to wait October, considering an average of 6 months per type-x port.
A "bravo" to NAOKI, though, a simple idea to renovate an engine!

Dang, NICE video!!oxtsu wrote:Another video, Stage 1-1 w/Batou.

In this one we can see clearly the new High Tension Max system. Press A+B (or D if the operator set it up) to engage and you will be in x8 for 10 seconds (see the red bar in upper left part of the screen), regardless where the player is in relation to the enemies. It's not that easy though, the High Tension is dosed like a bomb stock, not unlimited like suggested earlier. I believe the High Tension Max and Bombs share the same stock, but not 100% sure on that.

The character in that video looks pretty large compared to the first 2 Shiki games. He looks cell shaded, too. Also, what's that red-colored meter in for your character?
VERY nice scenery, and that boss explosion looks like it came right out of Psyvariar 2!

I think that's the point of the Max Tension Items System. In all Shiki's so far, when you die, your coin value gets reset, and I don't see them changing this just for the third game. And if that's the case, using Max Tension items at strategic locations after suiciding will be extremely important to quickly return your coin value back to maximum.Randorama wrote:Also, the thing you point out about coins is rather interesting: if coins get resetted as well, suicides become even trickier to handle (i.e. the wrong suicide to restock won't give you a good occasion for the x8 max, you don't score enough to extend again, etc. etc. ).
The abuse of the [Suicide -> Extend -> Max Tension] routine will be interesting to watch in a full run replay. Might almost be reaching Bakraid suicide lunacy ^_-

Okubo Station has posted directions on how to get the hidden charater, and how to unlock extreme mode.
I actually posted a translation here. Of course, everyone hangs out in my forums and knows that already... and probably of the link to the ALL CLEAR videos as well that I posted.

Awake from your grave!
A short note: The OST is excellent, with 3 or 4 songs being top-notch. The best is definitely "In the Heavens" (Stage 1), extremely elegant trance track with a strong flavour of Orb and some taste of Rai (spelling is wrong, i know) music as well. More detailed infos on request but, if you like elegant trance music, this is easily the best OST of the trilogy. It also comes with a lot of remixes (6), cocoebiz has it for a good price.

Yeah, I watched Greg play it when we were in Japan and I wasn't blown away. Hi rez sure looks nice, but as you stated, didn't look much better than II. I'm sure it takes some getting intimate with to truely appreciate. I got a photo of the promo poster outside of HEY that I'll have to post heretwe wrote:Played a couple credits at a few arcades in Tokyo, but it was an underwhelming experience. Felt (and looked) exactly like Shiki II. I didn't see anyone else play it the whole time I was in Japan.
