Galactic Gladiator level editor....make your own shmup!

Post by postman »

Image

After talking with the GG team, they have shared with me the Galactic Gladiator level editor, and its really cool. This is the closest thing we have to a shmup maker at the moment. You can't make new enemies, but you can place all existing enemies and set power ups and groups....

What I would like to know is, how many people would be interested in this? I tried to tell the team what a gem they are sitting on here, and would like to prove it by the amount of response in the shmups forum.

They have no problem with sharing it, but I would like for it to be from their site, so post interest here! I will probably do a write up with instructions on how to use it soon, but it's not very complicated........

Definitely, I'd be all over that. Can you do custom music?

No custom music the way it's currently set up, same as with backgrounds, you can only use the pre made ones, but maybe with a little hacking it would be possible.......if the source is released.

Yes, the resources must be somewhere together with the editor.

While I probably wouldn't use it too much (Maybe just for curiosity), I'd say that this would be great for the shmups community.

What about Shooter Maker or Daezemon?

Daezemon never got a US release (AFAIK), and I'm not familiar with Shooter Maker...........this level edit is current, understandable, and easy for people to pick up and get started with right away. I know Prelude is out there too, but I could never get it to work, and development on it has seemed to stop.

Can you....

-edit bullet patterns?
-change the speed of your ship?
-change the way enemies move?
-change the way you power up?
-control score mechanics?
-change the type of weapons your ship has?
-change hit boxes?

Star Trek the Shmup game editor!

a shmup editor. sounds interesting.
But I'm way too lazy to code a editor myself.

edit bullet patterns?
No. Enemies have defined behaviours.

-change the speed of your ship?
No. The ship also has a defined behaviour.

-change the way enemies move?
Yes. There are about 30 preset paths you can choose from, and you cannot make new paths.

-change the way you power up?
You can control what ships release which powerups, but not add new ones.

-control score mechanics?
No. You can set the minimum required score for a "challenge" type level though.

-change the type of weapons your ship has?
No. You have the standard 3 or 4 from the regular game, plus missiles.

-change hit boxes?
No.

Let me also say that the level editor was not designed with the purpose of being a "true" shmup maker. The team wasn't even thinking of releasing it, it was only after my requesting since I thought it would be really fun to play around with. The main purpose of the editor is to easily make add-on levels and scenarios to Galactic Gladiator.
