I've never really thought much about the rank system... I guess I should though as ORd was also saying its kinda vital. I've gotten to level 4 quite a few times, but the level 3 boss i cant quite master so i normallu lose a life or two there...
I find the best ship for scoring high is the blue one, no idea why though, maybe its because the sphere lockon
Do you always try to keep your rank as low as possible? or at 1 power up? or is it not just to do with your weapon power...

with rank control i have gotten as far as the level 5 boss. without i can only inconsistently get to the level 3 boss. when i play i don't collect Weapon Power Ups (or try not to), and go for the bomber items. since these are where the big score multipliers come in, at least as far as i understand.
as far as always keeping my rank low. i control it very rarely. normally when i play Souky (which isn't very often anymore to tell you the truth) i'm not very much into "mercy" so i let nothing pass. i most often play with the red ship, although i am not sure why.

Actually, I think that stuff you kill by bombing it is only worth 1/4 of its "regular" value, bosses included...also, when you only lock on to one or two enemies before destroying them, you only get half their "regular" value. The key to high scoring is to destroy as many targets at once as you can at once with the lock-on, their value is multiplied higher and higher as you're able to nail more and more at once. Missing powerups and getting more bombs will keep the rank down and help you get farther, but won't do much for your score.captain ahar wrote:when i play i don't collect Weapon Power Ups (or try not to), and go for the bomber items. since these are where the big score multipliers come in, at least as far as i understand.
Back on topic (sort of), I, a pretty sorry player in most respects, can usually get up to stage 4 or so on defaults...oddly enough, I tend to do better when I don't bother with rank, and grab the powerups et al...I find that I do need that blaster to get me out of a jam. I'm just weird though.

I want to add an easy game to 1CC.
Blast Wind.
I got the game yesterday, and I just 1cced it. The game is logging 1:05:36 hours of play time. The play count is at 10, but 2 of these were played with 2 players mode, and about 4 were restarted early.
It's a pretty easy game, still it's no walk in the park, so you won't feel like you didn't acomplish nothing when you finish it (cof cof HARMFUL PARK cof cof), and the last boss battle was very intense.
The game is very good. Not just "average" as I heard some people say, it's really very good.
Now I'll try to raise the difficulty

Maybe pick a different ship. Red homing shots makes a world of difference in the early stages, or those red bouncing shots towards the end. Have a bunch of those riccocheting around the tight corridors makes you practically invincible. I also like that yellow power shot and the charge shot for bosses.Frogacuda wrote:BHB is a bitch to 1cc...

Well, fire shark on the genny is pretty easy. Was just messing around with Steel Empire on the genesis today and got about half way through on one credit (and it is only the third or fourth time I've played it). You have a life bar and it gives out life-ups and extra lives (sorta hidden). Plus the genesis has a lot of slowdown, so you can walk through some of the patterns pretty easily (thank god since sometimes you have to kill the bosses at very close range). Oh, and the arwork is pretty cool too...

Thanks for the many replies.
I finally have my first 1cc!
Shienryu Explosion.
I'm pleased, of course, but the game was a bit too easy for me to think of this as much of an accomplishment. I managed to get the 1cc after only a couple hours of play with the game.
I think for my next 1cc effort I'll work on a game that requires a bit more memorization. Last night I read an interview on Shoot the Core with Kiken, Rob, and other champion Gradius V players. I didn't realize that they depend on memorization as much as they do. I assumed that they mostly relied on amazing twitch responses. This gives me some hope for the future. No doubt my main obstacle to decent success with shmups is that I don't have the space or energy for true dedication. Work and family zap most of my energy, so I'm left having to take a casual attitude toward my games. This sort of attitude does not lend itself to even moderate success (in my case) when the games are as hard as shmups tend to be.

I suggest ESP Galuda or the coming MushiHemi Same (in Orginal Mode).
They are not so dfficult and can really improve your skill in shumup.
Make use of the practice mode on later stages. You would improve fast.
Moverover Gradius/Darius series tends to have a longer play time per game. You would get more practice inprove faster by play more action intence Cave's shumup.

I cannot comment on the difficulty of Steel Empire. (I just noticed yesterday that it is no longer available for GBA at Play-Asia.)captain ahar wrote:can anyone comment on how difficult Steel Empire is. i just got the game and it (or Gate of Thunder, or Curse) will probably end up being my first 1CC(s). for my own ego, i would rather lose my cherry to a game that is not a total push-over.
I do want to comment on your other point. I think you're right to hold out for a tough game for your first 1cc. Beating Shienryu Explosion yesterday was not as fully satisfying as my first time should have been. On the other hand, to take up your metaphor, losing your cherry is hardly ever as satisfying as one might hope. Only with experience does one learn to get it right.

just to say for those that don't know Steel Empire was a cinch. between the multitude of 1-ups (hidden and bonus extends), and the actual gameplay itself, i came to my own solid conclusion. hard mode is okay though, bullets get pretty fast.
as far as my own accomplishments. gotten "this" close with Gradius Galaxies and Gradius III SNES. and maybe i'll complete Gate of Thunder if I ever turn my duo on again (not really a fact i am proud of...)

I enjoy shooters but have only 1cc'ed a very few games. One easy one I think would be Magical Chase for the Turbo. I have been able to 1cc this on the normal difficulty. The only other games I have 1cc'ed are Gradius(NES), Thunder Force III(gen), and Blast Wind(sat).
The Compile games usually seem easy for me until the very last level. I can get to stage 9 in blazing lazers, then all those bosses just seem to kick my arse. Same thing with MUSHA, 1 life til the last stage. I just makes me mad. And those games are looooooong.
So give Magical Chase a try. It really isn't to difficult and is not too long with only 6 levels. The main challanges will be the 5 level boss and the last level mini bosses. Final boss is quite easy once his patterns are learned and they are very easy to learn.

The challenge in Blast Wind comes from the 1LC or playing as the 2P ship (red ship). Though the higher difficulties are pretty rough too.
Great game though. Probably the only shmup I've logged in anywhere near as much time as I have with Radiant Silvergun. Playing it is just so damn relaxing.

Since the time I started this thread I have about four 1CCs, but they have all been very easy games like Zanac Neo, Harmful Park, and Shienryu Explosion. The games I have put most time into--- like Gunbird 2, Dragon Blaze, and Strikers 1945---are games I will never 1CC. Just too hard for me. I'm happy so far to have gotten to 1-5 and 1-6 in these.
