I see a problem... Pelican Arcade Stick. Dont use that. It is so bad.

Secondly I recommend DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

For a young whipper-snapper Harmful park (JP PSX) is probably your best bet among the modern-ish shmups. Easy difficulty with cute graphics kids will like. One of my first shmups was Stinger (NES), which was a lot of fun back in 1988, but that would be fun for a kid today too I think.

My 3 year old plays Gunbird2.... he hammers the bomb button whilst not moving, scratches his nose then dies. Skillz.

Star Parodier, obviously.

Also, Coryoon.

Both for PC-Engine.

Boot up DOJ, go to sim mode, max out the rank, select 2-5 and throw him to the wolves. He's at the key moment of developing hand-eye coordination, if he can aclimatize to Hibachi before he can speak there will be no stopping him.

I think it's more likely he'll require therapy for years to come after an experience like that at such a tender age. ;)

It could work :) Worth a try, obviously it may take a while to get results...

One thing you wanna watch out for though, is pushing em into it. They'll just end up resenting shmups in general if they know thats what you want them to do :P

Most Psikyo games (like Gunbird) are quite easy to pick up. Blast Wind might be a good start up as well.

When I was a kid I used to enjoy Raptor on the PC a lot. Haven't played that game in ages, so I don't really know anymore if it was that easy.

Start him off with some older title with less flashy lights...

Galaga
Gemini Wing
Moon Cresta

I wouldn't start him off with anything manic - i would suggest something like Raystorm. It's got easy to learn mechanics and the frequency of death isn't so... oppressive.

It also has some decent flashy graphics, nice music, and big robots. It's colorful enough for a kid to notice right away and the bullet patterns aren't very intimidating.

Also, the ending will teach him early about the honor in self sacrifice :( :)
