Here is a complete llist of DC shooters:
8-Way
======
Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaiou
Horizontal:
===========
Border Down
Vertical:
===========
Chaos Field
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2
Ikaruga
Mars Matrix
Psyvariar 2 - The Will To Fabricate
Shikigami No Shiro 2
Trizeal
Twinkle Star Sprites
Zero Gunner 2
Border Down is similar to Aero Blasters/Air Buster (Arcade/PCE/Genesis) in the Level design & layout department.
Well, there is also G-Rev's Senko no Ronde for the NAOMI that's coming for the X-Box 360 (Possible DC port), but its a combination of 8-way shooter (Aka Thunder Force II, judging by the pics) & Mecha high speed fighting like Zone of the Enders. So it’s not exactly your average shooter like Border Down.

^^^I saw a copy of sealed copy of Rainbow Cotton at a nearby shop for $25 yesterday, slight crack in case. If that's a real good deal, maybe I should get it. But I haven't heard anything good about the game.
Oh, and they had Armada sealed for $15-- another DC shooting-type game about which I've heard nothing good.

truth. clunky play control makes this game virtually unplayable.

Are you talking abut Rainbow Cotton or Armada?
I've got a nero image of Cotton which I haven't been bothered to burn & try yet... and an original copy of Armada whcih I got for 5Euros, but I haven't burned the JPN boot disc yet ro try it out?...
Should I spend the CDs & time on them?

I guess Rainbow Cotton, as that game was covered by retrocore.ST Dragon wrote:Are you talking abut Rainbow Cotton or Armada?

Armada I have as well, but I can't even remember what it was like. Cotton I wanted to try as I love Space Harrier (II). I was disappointed.
The character is too big and obscures the projectiles. Also it doesn't feel right.
Even so I would recommend trying them out yourself. I have on many occasions have heard only bad things about games I love dearly (and vice versa).
May we speak the beauty of thee, O Earth, that is in thy villages and forests and assemblies and war and battles.

Judging from the reviews posted in various threads, I would say they're pretty accurate & trustworthy....
But yes, you're right I should try them both.

The above complete list needs updating to include Under Defeat and Radilgy. Anything else?
Last night I played Shiki II on the DC for the first time and it was a significantly different experience from both PS2 and GC. The soundtrack was a bit different, it seems, and it seemed that there was absolutely no slowdown, which made the 2-2 boss' final form a whole new beast.

Also, the soundtracks in the PS2 and GC revs of Shiki 2 are remastered. The DC soundtrack is the same as the NAOMI original. And you ought to be able to turn WAIT on and off (you would want it set to ON).

You clearly want to be able to play imports, as the following lists makes clear:Gorecki wrote:Are there any DC shmups that were only released in Japan? I'm currently looking to pick one up (mostly for Ikaruga and the Gigawings), and I'm not sure whether I should go for a US model or a Japanese one.
US releases:
Bangai-O
Cannon Spike
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2
Mars Matrix
Only in Japan:
Ikaruga
Psyvariar 2 The Will To Fabricate
Radirgy
Shikigami No Shiro II
Trizeal
Twinkle Star Sprites
Under Defeat
Zero Gunner 2
Border Down
Chaos Field
With that said, it is very easy to play imports on a US console. E.g. with GameShark's CDX.

About half of the DC shmups were only released in Japan.Gorecki wrote:Are there any DC shmups that were only released in Japan? I'm currently looking to pick one up (mostly for Ikaruga and the Gigawings), and I'm not sure whether I should go for a US model or a Japanese one.
As for which region to get, it doesn't really matter. With a DC-X (disc swap converter), you can play games from both regions. Though it's really up to you, if you already have a US Dreamcast, I'd say just go with a DC-X and whatever Japanese shmup you want.
