Heh. This was one of my favorite records in high school. I wonder where my copy ended up. I haven't seen it in...fifteen years?

Goooood stuff. My pick for best hardcore/punk/crossover album ever.
Feedback will set you free.

Thinking Plague - A History of Madness : extremely different and competent odd contemporary classical/rock
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian : timeless classic. Probably my favourite record.
Immolation - Harnessing Ruin : Immolation went and got all different and better than they've been in years. Good death metal, not tired.

I've been reading back and it's quite surprizing how many different tastes, all of high quality populate this thread. Top stuff from different bases. Extra points for Rob for recognizing Epicus Doomicus Metallicus as superior to Nightfall or in fact of any of the Messiah records (maybe Tales of Creation comes close if it weren't for some filler) which shows a real understanding of the Epic Doom feel. I urge you to listen to Forsaken (Malta) - Dominaeon. It's pure bliss, in the same vein as early Candlemass.

Sorcerer (Sweden)- Sorcerer is quite mandatory too.

Doom-wise I forgot one on my list, recently revisited:

Esoteric - Subconscious Dissolution into the Continuum. Had bought it awhile back, thought it was not as good as Metamorphogenesis. More brooding is all, very nice.

Thanks, I'll definitely check those out.

Metamorphogenesis just beats you over the face with the first track, but as it rolls you realize that it's extremely painful in the mixing and mastering, not in a good way. Subconscious is quite better in both songwriting and mixing.

As I'm in a musical rush these days, there's a truckload of albums I like or love:

Gojira - whole deathcography but From Mars to Sirius gets my votes particularly.

Underoath - their latest album is just great.

Gorgoroth - wonderful latest album

Haste the Day - Burning Bridges

Ataraxie - Slow Transcending Agony Best French metal band IMO

Envy - Insomniac Dose is a FUCKING gem, one of my all-time favorite albums

And there are many many bands left that I simply love like Mourning Beloveth, My Dying Bride, the Nortt album etc.

I've only heard one of his early self-entitled albums, which I enjoyed. Got any recommendations?

Charlemagne Palestine - Strumming Music / Four Manifestations on Six Elements
Colleen - Everyone Alive Wants Answers -- Coincidence, was looking at Colleen's site and there's listed the same two CP albums above as favorites. I knew they fit together. No Exhumed, though!
Exhumed - Anatomy is Destiny -- Again, finally bought it like a good music fan. Makes Necroticism seem a little restrained, for better or worse (better).

Moondog 1 & 2 are classic orchestral albums (how did he get an orchestra? I have no idea.)

There's also a really nice overview of his non-orchestral stuff on this disc:

Viking of sixth avenue

Oh yeah, and to keep our list goin' here:
Early Dimmu Borgir (everyone says they are sell outs, but so what?)
And of course my usual Morricone consumption (my god, the soundtrack to The Great Silence and Orca are still so fucking great...)

So yeah. That last post of mine. Had to be done.

Thanks, Pa. Right back at you, man. Big props for Hank Williams, Django Reinhart, Xavier Cugat, Raekwon, and of course, Man...Or Astroman?
V/A - Dirtnap Across the Northwest
I want this comp so badly, but haven't found it at any of my usual local suspects. Also, I've been wanting to peep Teengenerate (the fact that they named themselves after an old Dictators song is reason enough for me), but nobody around here seems to have anything by 'em. Ah, well.

Today, it's been:

Slayer - Haunting the Chapel EP
Gluecifer - Ridin' the Tiger
Willie Nelson - Shotgun Willie
