This series is the most bizarre to ever come about. The first game had strange human/machine enemies and then the series went homoerotic after that. I would have to say the music makes the game even more weird. I find the series very amusing and would love to see another game come about for the PS3.

I used to have the one for PSone but it was horrible. The first one for PCE is really good though.

I wish I could like it, but they're not good shooters :x
The fighting game is even more unplayable, but as shooters they aren't up to par with the other cute (errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) 'em up. Except maybe with Cotton boomerang or Cotton 2 that is  (*ducks and flees*).
To sum it up, they play a bit stiff (erm), the shooting (ermm) strategies are a bit below average and it isn't much nauseating once you get used to the style, which is nicely drawn btw, but really poorly animated.
I haven't seen the PS2 Choaniki, so maybe that one could be the best one.

Now I'm going to fix my innuendometer.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

the 2 PCE ones are really good games on their merits, even if the second has a quite special maniability..
unfortunately i have to admit the SAT/PSX episode and the PS2 one are only worth it for their weirdness, they look like shit and are unplayable. i still bought them knowingly, in fact i even have the wonderswan cho aniki rpg and the sfc fighter (that one takes the cake, i like the cover though)

I think the PS2 version is quite playable.
I also like the music of the series.

How do the PCE games compare to other early NCS titles (Gleylancer, Gynoug etc)?

The PCE Choaniki's gameplay feels similar to Gynoug and Gleylancer, I mean in terms of pacing, style, etc, although the weapons system is a bit different of course.

Ai-Choaniki, the second one, is a bit weirder, that's where it started becoming all homoerotic, and you can do these special attacks by inputing Streetfighter commands. Still, a much better game than the later Choanikis.

I'd say the PS2 Cho Aniki is the most playable of them all. I think the game was developed by members of Psikyo and Masaya so having Psikyo behind them gives the game more experience in the shmup realm.

Yeah, the game has a large number of logos before the title screen, and Psikyo's one of 'em... Psikyo, NCS, X-Nauts, and Global A.

I have both PCE Choanikis, and I fully agree that the gameplay leaves a bit to be desired. My thought is that no one would really want to own either title now save for a conversation piece. And honestly, the over-the-top presentation of Ai-Choaniki is the only one that serves that purpose well.

i don't think so, it was probably the empty shell of Psikyo who bought the rights from the empty shell of Masaya.

Yeah, just look at Sengoku Cannon. You can't tell me that crapola still has the spirit of Psikyo in it.

Owning just the PS1 game I can underscribe this way of thinking about that one. Guess the PS2 version is to be mine, if only to "build up"my collection. ;)

Yeah, actually it was one of the games I always showed my FIFA/Halo/GTA-playing firends when they came over to my house - then I would secretly snap a picture of their shock and awe ridden faces and use them in my fake MySpace accounts*.

Once all my friends had seen it and it lost all its shock value I decided to sell it though.

The only reason I have to get choaniki for PS2 is to complete my PS2 shmup collection. Not a good enough reason, I'm afraid.

That collection is long gone, but now I have a different reason to pick up choaniki for PS2. As a Psikyo fan, I will have to play this some day.

It's an intentionally shitty game. I think the only reason anyone would play it is for laughs, or show it to friends for even more laughter.

Also the gameplay for the PS1 one was so shit, I ended up putting on cheat codes to see the rest of the game. First time I had done that in years ..

If anybody wants to see Samson and Adon, it'd be a lot more fun to play Langrisser II instead.

It came out yesterday, at least on the European VC :D . After looking up a couple of gameplay videos I decided to plonk down the 900 points for it. I was disappointed on my first couple of credits, but it quickly grew on me after that. I can see why it is such a divisive game though, as the arrangement of enemy waves feels slapdash at times and there are a few places where you can just camp in one spot and annihilate everything without moving or getting hit.

The similarities to Gynoug are obvious. Hopefully that will turn up on the VC at some point. I'm looking forward to Gley Lancer next.
