150 $$ Challenge

Post by Belmont »

My wife recently purchased a coppy of Radiant Silvergun for me off ebay and was just wondering if you think money could have been put to better use. (Im not gonna sell the game or anything this is just for fun) So if you were me and had 150 bones to blow on ebay what Shmups would you buy? Keep in mind that i dont own a pc engine or a import dreamcast (do you even need one?) I figure with that kind of cash i could have a few saturn shmups like battle gerega or something like that. Lemme hear your ideas (cuz i might actually buy em someday)

P.S. Im not really going to sell my copy of RSG back on ebay

Wow, that's cold. "Thanks for the nice gift, but I'm going to sell it and shoot higher on ebay"? ;-)

$150 is better used on toilet paper for wiping one's ass from the smell of Radiant Silvergun

...sorry I just think that's the most overrated game of all time, it drives me nuts.

If you're looking for Saturn shmups Batsugun and DoDonpachi are musts. Soukyugurentai is my fav though :)

2 purchases that seem obligatory on saturn (among many) for $150 shipped:

Battle Garegga $100
Soukyugurentai $50

Two totally different games, hours and hours of pleasure. Please note that you can switch Souky with Dodonpachi depending of your tastes, but BG's an timeless classic.
$150 and you get 2 of the top 3 shmups on saturn, nice deal.

For $150, you could get all of these:

Soukyugurenti Otokuyo - $35
Galactic Attack (RayForce) - $7
Darius Gaiden - $8
Batsugun - $60
Thunderforce V - $40

This gives you the original manic shooter, the two greatest Taito shooters (well, on Saturn - G-Darius on PSX completes the trinity), some Raizing insanity, and the awesome final game in the Thunderforce series.

Fixed to save confusion, and seconded. Although I might throw in Darius Gaiden or Soukyugurentai somewhere.

This is true.

Despite owning almost 50 of the Saturn shmups now, I have put more time into RS than all the other Saturn shmups combined (well, if we don't count Blast Wind and Hyper Duel).

Give or take a few bucks, those are pretty close to the going eBay rate for those games, I'd say...the US releases of Layer Section and Darius Gaiden go for pretty cheap, and the 3 imports generally don't go for much more than what was listed.

Agreed.

Although snagging Battle Garegga and either Hyper Duel or Batsugun would be decent too...

I find those prices a bit low counting the shipping, aren't they?

Not really. It depends on how complete you want your games, whether you're picky about versions, and how patient you are about getting good deals. Protip: you can usually find better prices in the Trading Station forum than on eBay.

For instance, you can find Thunderforce V for as low as $30 if you don't mind the Satakore re-release, used, missing a spine card. You can find Soukyugurentai Otokuyo for as low as $20 if you're patient. RayForce and Darius Gaiden can be had for as little as $5 if you're willing to put up with cracked cases (which is very common with those awful domestic Saturn/Sega CD cases).

Just be patient and keep tracking the sales forum for good deals. And don't convince yourself that a friggin' spinecard is worth the extra $10 that it generally adds to the price.

Battle Garegga
Batsugun
Souky
Game paradise
Layer Section

Apart from RSG I'd say they are the best saturn exclusives that i've played. I've not played the tecnosofts efforts except blast wind and Kingdom grandprix, both of which left a sour taste in my mouth.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Easy!
Indeed, Battle Garegga
Also a cheap secondhand ps1 and PS-Dodonpachi.
If a little change is left quickly bid on PS-Sonic Wings Special
(cheap, best bang for buck award)

RS has the best looking 3D visuals I have to admit and the music is nice too, but I still second the negative replies it got in this thread

Battle Gerega (85$) http://cgi.ebay.com/SS-BATTLE-GAREGGA-I ... dZViewItem

Soukyugurentai (35$) http://cgi.ebay.com/SOUKYUGURENTAI-for- ... dZViewItem

Batusgun (75$) http://cgi.ebay.com/SS-BATSUGUN-MINT-im ... dZViewItem

He said he's not really going to sell it back. And thats a good decision, because the game is damn good :)

I'm going to break away from the Saturn trend here and recommend

Border Down (DC)
ESPGaluda (PS2)
Dodonpachi Daioujou (PS2)

Also, in response to your question in the initial post, you do not need an import DC to play import games as long as you have a boot disc and a console produced before Oct 2000.

I know, but you know that "I have a friend who has this problem...." phenomenon? Maybe he just does not want to get yelled at by a bunch of us RSG non-haters. Though I think the risk of capital punishment from the girlfriend is probably enough deterrent for him not to actually sell

You really gotta apprecitate her dedication to go on the RSG-acquiring mission (and on Evilbay no less)--hold on to her Belmont!!
