R type Final Jpn & US different? and it's still a bitch
I have recently just started taking my copy of this serious and sit down with it. I'm wondering if they changed anything in US vers? I know some of the codes are different but what I'm curious about most if the jpn one lets u get unlimited credits? I heard the US one does....

The only thing I remember distinctly cool about the jpn deal is that inside the dvd sleeve there were some number code riddles.
I dunno which version you're playing, but if it's jpn, the more you play, take note when you get your game overs. If you find the credit max increasing over the long haul, it's a good bet Free Play will be the final stop.
Work on unlocking ships. You'll eventually start to see a few toys where using them will eliminate the need for credits.

no it's 101 in both, iirc. Only some requirements were changed in order to unlock some. There were a couple ships named differently in the Korean version of the game. More details at R's Museum.Super Laydock wrote:Wasn't the total number of ships larger in the Japanese version than in it's US counterpart!? I think I remember reading about the total being slightly trimmed down for whatever odd reason...![]()

This is taken from gamefaq cause I'm too lazy to explain how to get all the endings.
Stage 6.X Which version of Stage 6 you play depends on how you beat the
boss of Stage 5.0. The first time you encounter the boss it
there is only one thing you can do, and you will always go
to Stage 6.0. On your second trip through 5.0 the boss will
have blue prongs attached to it. Destroy them first to go to
Stage 6.1 after the boss is destroyed, or destroy the boss
and not the prongs to go back to Stage 6.1. On your third
trip through 5.0 the boss will have red prongs in addition
to blue ones. Destroying the red ones take you to Stage 6.2
and you can still access 6.0 and 6.1 normally.
Stage F-X There is no secret to getting to the different version of
Stage F. Beating 6.0 takes you to F-A, beating 6.1 takes you
to F-B, and beating 6.2 takes you to F-C.
If you choose the F-C route, you only have 1 life to beat this level. I havnt done this yet but will eventually cause its probably the best ending in the game. I havnt looked to see what this ending brings cause I want suprises.

I won't be "that guy" and tell you. I'll just say go look online about what the "ending" is. Take the advice now or be mad later. Your pick.sideshow wrote:If you choose the F-C route, you only have 1 life to beat this level. I havnt done this yet but will eventually cause its probably the best ending in the game. So that's where the unlock codes for password-protected ships come from? Anyone got scans of these riddles?DJ Incompetent wrote:The only thing I remember distinctly cool about the jpn deal is that inside the dvd sleeve there were some number code riddles.
Is 101 really the maximum number of ships? This might be total bs, but I *think* I once saw a memory card with 103/99 or 104/99 unlocked ships (?)
Edit: Then again, ship # 101 is called "Grand Finale"..

Irem does what the hell they want cause they made the game. I honestly was suprised playing through the game a couple times cause at first I had no idea that the Stage 5 boss was the determinate in how the next 2 stages come about. I still think the production value that was put into this game is very high for a shmup.

I don't think I'll ever see F-C, or F-A even, thanks to the second form of the level 4 boss. Took me about 3 hours clocked to get to him.... coming up on 40 hours total playtime and he still brings 99% of my runs to an end.
I'm playing it on Bydo, and those pustules/spikes/eyeball thingies bomb it round the screen at such a ridiculous speed that I end up dying, hurl my controller across the room, and then scream into a pillow.
I love the game but it fills me with an almost inhuman rage.

The level 5 boss is significantly worse, too. He uses lots of these reflective lasers, which would be easy enough to judge and dodge, except for the fact that there's this weird wobbly graphical effect in use, so the lasers can sometimes bend right into you when you've found a wee safe spot.
You do get used to it, but it takes a good few hours of practice...

I got to him, once. He drifted slowly onscreen, opened up his shell, some kind of wobbly pink craziness happened and suddenly I was looking at a game over screenBal-Sagoth wrote:The level 5 boss is significantly worse, too. The background warping in stage 5 is reliant on your current ship speed. The faster your ship speed, the greater the oscillation.

Some tips against the second form:Gorecki wrote:I don't think I'll ever see F-C, or F-A even, thanks to the second form of the level 4 boss. Took me about 3 hours clocked to get to him.... coming up on 40 hours total playtime and he still brings 99% of my runs to an end.

-Select a suitable ship. One with an intelligent and aggressive Force will be the best.
-Speed your ship up to max.
-When the second form approaches, detach the Force, fire the wave cannon, press down the autofire button and keep flying around the.. THING and let the Force do the dirty work. Concentrate on dodging.
-If your ship has a quick and efficient wave cannon (as opposed to say Sexy Dynamite II), use it to take out the loose thingies whenever you are suitably positioned.
Haven't tested on R-TYPER, but works on BYDO.
Stage 5 boss is one of my fave bosses of all time, a real challenge =)
Stage F-C is hell.. the first time round anyway. It takes a long time to get there, and you're all happy, "A secret mission! Yay!", thinking which ship in your roster will be the most trustworthy, preparing.... Then the first wave of enemies scorches you within 2 seconds and it's back to Stage 1.
P.S. Strider77, hey man, don't go changing the thread names! This was supposed to be about differences in the US/JP versions.

Theres one of the ships that looks like a pow armour. It has a (needle?)force that spreads dense bullets in all directions. Firing the force into enemies while firing so that it point blanks them kills very quickly, made 6-C not so bad. Its my favourite ship to use second only to LEO-II
Know thy enemy attack pattern.
