Thanks for setting me straight, I was under the impression that the first 5 levels from DX = the first 5 from 2, just with the new medal mechanic added.

As I said, RDX is a strange beast. "Training" is a single (but long) new level, "Novice" is the first five levels from RII, and "Expert" is eight (well, nine really) new stages with RII's bosses. Add in a new medal scoring system over top of all three modes, and the three choices you get for tunes to listen to as you play (the original Raiden DX tunes which sound like slightly remixed Raiden music, entirely new music, or Viper Phase 1 music), and what you have is a good game that's almost a hodgepodge of new and past elements in the Raiden series.

Now if we could just get someone to make a Raiden Anthology...

It's not so uncommon - DX has so much new material to be a full fledged sequel, but since it used after all a lot from RII, they didn't call it Raiden III. Just like Street Fighter Alpha 2 Dash, except DX adds much more depth.

P.S. the Viper Phase 1 music is exclusive to the PS port, of course.

Good grief all the time I owned this game and never once did I realize VP1 music was availible.
I tried extracting the tracks onto pc but it never seemed to work.
Anyone ever manage to grasp the soundtrack for this?

I appreciate both links.
I was considering to get VP1 INH set but I'm not crazy about the soundtrack, which is why I wondering as to the reason it not being able to extract off RDX disc.

Bringing an old thread here...

Can anybody confirm the Tate options in the Pal release? Do you have to lay with the controller on it's side if playing in tate?

Alternatively, how damaging is the impact of the forced checkpoints in the JPN version, and is tate mode in the JPN version?

Thanks.

Don't think so - no!. A real shame.

Any word yet on Tate in the PAL Raiden Project?

I can confirm that tate mode is in the JP version, though I've never played Raiden without checkpoints, so I can't say much about their "impact."

Cheers OmniGLH.

I had looked at that thread, but prompted by your link I re-read it and have learnt the PAL release has Tate.

Now I just need to see if the PAL version makes you turn your controller on it's side!

Raiden without checkpoints in single player mode means that when the plane is hit, one or two powerup items are ejected as the plane explodes and another plane immediately appears and has about a second of invicibility. (Two player mode always plays without checkpoints.)

So if one is very lucky, one of the powerups ejected will be a missile powerup and the other one will be a P powerup. Get them in the right order and full power missiles and firepower are obtained immediately. If the 10,000 point fairy was picked up, the fairy is ejected from the plane and immediately starts dropping additional powerups. In the worst possible case, only two shot powerups are ejected, and then getting a blue followed by a red (or vice versa) means switching weapons without powering up... especially during a boss battle, this can happen if one is trying to pick up powerups while also dodging enemy shots.

On the other hand, getting hit during a boss battle without checkpoints means that firepower will be very weak, more than likely forcing the use of bombs unless the boss pattern is well learned without using bombs, or unless one is fortunate to have ejected a P upon losing a plane. With checkpoints, there is at least a chance to powerup and maybe pick up an extra bomb before refighting the boss.
