Nice collection. I notice the PCB is a suicide one - you can get patched ROMs now allowing the use of a normal 68000, although it's similar to the CPS2 service, so you do have to pay.

Crazy!! ive never played any cotton game before which one has your highest recommendations to play?

So hard to recommend the best...most people don't agree with me but I think Panorama Cotton is the best of them...in fact, it's my favorite game ever made

If you're into 16bit 2D stuff at all I'd recommend the SFC (Cotton 100%) and Cotton Original. But if you like more flashy/newer 2D shooters, stick with the Saturn ones (which people like most).
If you have a NGPC you definitely have to get that one...it's a great little game and the only shmup on the NGPC!

I like the spelling error of the PS1 Cotton 100% cover. *lol*

On the cover and disc stands "Märhcen Adventure" while it should be called "Märchen Adventure".

Märchen = Fairy tale in German (BTW)

I like the original Cotton quite a lot, also the nice CD soundtrack and voice acting on PCE. But I haven't played the newer Cotton games.

Panorama Cotton is one of my very favorite games as well. I wrote a FAQ and a review for it over on gamefaqs, and I try to spread love about it whenever I can. When I get back from my exchange, I would like to overclock my genesis so that I can play it completely free of slowdown - one of the few minor problems the game occasionally has.

I also just recently bought a superplay of Cotton 2. The guy got a crazy 26 million points. Have you ever seen this video before? I keep hearing rumors that it exists on the internet, but I've never seen it. If it doesn't, I'll try to rip mine, but I'll need help to do it...

It's great to see another die-hard Cotton fan...and a Panorama Cotton lover too! I was really damn lucky to come across the cup alone...it set me back $75....for a cup...lol. The PCB I *just* got a couple weeks ago...dear lord it is rare, klov rates it as the second rarest arcade game there is. I believe it too, I've only seen one working of these in all my years of collecting. I dropped a cool $135 for it but I'm told it's worth a lot more.

Panorama Cotton is simply magnificent...it's such a shame that people are quick to toss it aside as some sort of Space Harrier clone. It's one of the most brilliant works of gaming I've ever seen. Assembler's review is the only one that I've read to do it justice. There's so much depth to it too, have you seen all the hidden endings? I think to see the full ending you have to beat it on hard with one life as both Cotton and Silk. That game has so much depth, it's just a masterpiece.

Sadly, I may be selling the collection. I have a buyer for $995 that I'll likely be selling it to. I sure am going to miss it all....

Yeah, I think MAME will satisfy my needs for the original Cotton. Too bad the PCB is so rare.

I have beaten Panorama Cotton under pretty much all settings and seen all the endings. You just get to see more of the ending depending on the difficulty setting you chose. At the end of a run with Silk, that strange picture you get to see is Silks belly button, which it presents to you as something of a good luck charm. Crazy.

I know I can't beat $995, but that sounds like a good deal for you. Maybe one day I will have my own collection to stand up next to it...I can only hope.

German is super popular in the Japanese gaming world for some reason. Also see Einhänder, Stahlfeder, Galaxy Fräulein Yuna, Wachenröder, Xenosaga: Der Wille zur Macht & Jenseits von Gut und Böse and a whole bunch of other games.

Probably they think German sounds badass or something.

Anyway, that's a fucking sweet collection you got there. How long did it take you to amass them?

Cool, another Cotton fan.

(for the record, Boomerang's my personal favorite.) Pretty impressive collection: what caught my eye the most was the trading card-looking thing sitting by your Saturn Cotton 2: I have the game and the calendar (as do you) but I've never seen that trading card before...did that come with the game originally, or is it something completely separate?

It's worth around $1100 seperately from my calculations, but I'd rather ship it all together than having to try and sell all these titles to different places. Plus, it just belongs together- it would be like splitting up a family or something

Wow, awesome site, thanks for the link! Looks like that person has been I die-hard Cotton fan since its release...and since he's stationed in Japan he must have mailed away/bought the cups for every Cotton game, wow. I wonder if he has all the games too...(probably not the PCB heheheh)

The big black Hitachi CPU block. It's a 68000 variant CPU but contains a security key used to decrypt the code roms. It also contains a battery. Battery goes flat, key is lost, game is dead. Very common on Sega games of this age, and since they've been around for so long now, it's not uncommon to find suicided ones. The batteries were never supposed to last as long as they have Smile

OH damn, that's crazy...I'm gonna poke around there and find the 3.6v lines so I can parallel a battery to make it last longer. I rather not send it to Razoola if I don't have to

I actually got this in a trade with a Japanese gamer when I bought one of my Cotton games. He threw it in for free and appearently it was part of some Japanese video game character trading card set. Looks completely official too (copyrights and all that).

You can't. You can replace it, but it's incredibly difficult, and risky to even expose the battery as they taped the wires to the metal cover. The battery is inside the CPU itself, under that cover with HITACHI stamped on it. Power loss for even a microsecond = death. It's not Razoola this time, but it's a similar deal.

Nice Cotton collection though, Cotton is a great series. And like Twiddle says, don't let go of Cotton Boomerang, which is the best of the lot.

I think that's a little too general to be definitive. Dedication to game skill comes from serious play. Dedication to collecting comes from great enthusiasm towards your collection.

The term "dedication" is far too broad (and subjective!) to be limited to simple playing terms.

But what do I know? I had no idea there were that many games in the Cotton series.

No, you can love a game/series just as much, even if you're not good at playing it.

Once you finish university you may find that you don't have time anymore to play a game to perfection. On the other hand you will most likely have more money to burn on your shmups collection.

Time and money are the only factors, not dedication.

cotton is really cool. a very pure and charming game experience with decently thought through scoring system.
i haven't played many myself, but have a real thing for cotton 2 on the saturn.

The series is somewhat varied...all (except Panorama Cotton and Rainbow Cotton, which are "Star Fox-esque") are side-scrollers, but "evolve" in an interesting manner...the first two (Cotton and Cotton 100%) are relatively basic, with a limited amount of special attacks and fairies which serve as options. Cotton 2 is a whole new ballgame, which introduces "Street Fighter" motions to activate a wide array of special attacks (though in the Saturn port you can put some of them to individual buttons), as well as a "sealing" system ("sealing" an enemy into a ball of magic with a special attack allows you to throw them at other enemies to create chains, etc.) as well as an "elemental" system (which affects your main shot and how "sealed" enemies behave), plus a handful of other things. Boomerang takes most of what Cotton 2 added and tosses in a "team" system (sort of like Batrider), with 8 characters to select from (okay, 6 of them are variations on 2 "main" characters, but have very different attacks), and bigger firepower (and better accessibility) all around, with some additional tweaks and whatnot.

None of the games are perfect, or have universal appeal, but I think everyone ought to at least try them and see what they think, as Boomerang in particular is a personal favorite of mine.
