No. They just loop forever.

I haven't passed the first Boss yet.
Admittedly, I didn't give the game more than maybe 20 minutes because other titles distracted me. And I think my inability to beat the boss is more due to me doing something fundementally wrong as far as strategy is concerned than to lack of skill. Still Aleste GG 2 seemed a lot harder than the first one to me. Hmm. I think I should get back to the game, but I hate playing on emus.
IMO Shanghai Alice shmups can get a little sticky even on their default difficulty, if you're a complete shmup newbie. I cut my teeth on Parsec47 and 19XX, personally.
More detailed recommendations:
19XX: Good intro shmup. Challenge scales quite nicely, although it is a little too prone to memorization/"trick" play. Hit boxes are kind of big. Also, if you have scruples, you will need to get the PCB of this, which will cost an arm and a leg. (Or play at an arcade like I did... though that also cost an arm and a leg...)
Parsec47: Excellent. Whenever you clear a level, the next level is at just the right challenge for you. Be sure to grab the new version with 2 secondary-fire modes.
Imperishable Night: Easy mode is great for a shmup beginner. Very pretty visuals; lots of different attack patterns to choose from; good balance of memorization and raw skill. It'll cost you, but it's still a lot cheaper than an arcade PCB.

Super Star Soldier

I find onthe default these are at just the right difficulty myself.

As with me and the ThunderForce Series*But I'm not that good at Hori Shooters*
totally agree! I've seen shooters mentioned here that people have intimated are well-easy but i've really struggled with and conversely, i've 1cc'ed games that others say they've found tough. It really is just what you find suits your own game. For the record, Vapor trail, Musha Aleste and Axelay i found all pretty easy and Musha got beat first go!
