Give this one a try....

Post by dial911 »

If you are looking for an amazingly addictive doujin game then check out Wrath:

http://page.freett.com/harduserki/wrath_dl.html

The gameplay is spot on, the bullet patterns are very nice, and the music is awesome (very similiar to the Mega Man X soundtracks). The music alone is worth the download :)

My only complaint is that the sprites are a tad to gi-hugen.
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

I tried this briefly a short time back, I ought to play it again...it has a variation on the "hyper" mechanic from DOJ, but despite the name I don't recall it being overly challenging...my favorite feature, of course, is the "rank-o-meter" in the lower right corner. ;)

I'm downloading for the music suggestion alone...

[edit]

Sorry if I sound like a party crasher, but no sound worked at all. The graphics were nice and bright (if too happy looking), and a tad blocky.

When I browsed the system files, the music is .mid files!! Argh, that's just too bad. I was hoping for something more less digital sounding to chew on.

The sound worked crystal clear for me; and while the sound files are midis they are quality and sound top notch (The boss music in particular is bomb).

Just played the first few levels, great game. Nice little DOJ homage and I love the music, reminds me of PC Engine CD tunes.

It even says "Hyper" in the upper part of the screen. :P

Well yeah, but in this version you can actually "turn on" and "turn off" the hyper effect rather than using the whole stock at once. ;) In that sense the "hyper" in Dan! Da! Dan! is truer to DOJ, ironically enough, heh heh.

IIRC when you hit the "hyper" button your shot will be powered up and bullets onscreen will vanish (like in DOJ), but if you hit the button again during the hyper it will "turn off." However, even if you only turn the hyper on for a second and then right back off to get rid of some bullets, you'll use up at least 100 points of hyper charge, to prevent you from abusing it for defensive purposes too much. It's been awhile since I played it, but I think that's how it works...

Interesting, thanks.

And now that you jogged my memory I downloaded Dan! Da! Dan! again. Had to wade through a bunch of Dan Brown links on google first though. :P

Cool game. Lots o' bullets to dodge. And the Stage 2 boss gets an honorary mention just for being a robot instead of a generic spacecraft/tank. Got to Stage 4's boss on my first run.

There's some kind of buzzing mechanic there, anybody know if it's just for a bit of added score or if there's a deeper purpose behind it?

I didn't hear any music either, sound worked fine though. Wonder what's up with that...
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

The game gets an A for a home brew shmup with fluid gameplay.

Didn't know there are people out there who like Mega Man music
Or Capcom music in general... never liked their stuff.

Well okay, Suleputer (I think that's the name of their sound team?) brought forth a handful of decent tunes. But most of it sounds so whiney, it blares, it almost never manages to evoke any interesting emotions in my case.

But I digress, and to stay on topic, yeah it's an alright game.
The quality of MIDI music largely depends on the soundbank it's being played back with, and that's usually dependant on your soundcard.

its actually:

Alph Lyla / Alph Lyra / Alfh Lyra

(different spellings but all the same thing)

I believe Suleputer was created by Capcom for the purpose of publishing/printing their merchandise.
