Sharp X68000 Exclusive Shmups?...

Post by dave4shmups »

Every time I hear about his PC in relation to shmups, it's always been shmups that have also been released on other platforms.

So, are there any shmup-exclusives for the X68000?

Wasn't Cho Ren Sha initially a X68K exclusive title? (Before it got 'ported' to Windows?)

Oh yes and there's Gradius '90, which is the MSX Nemesis 2 game but with Gradius III quality graphics. I played a couple of others too but I can't remember which ones.

(EDIT: http://www.excellentcontent.com/emuzone/ez137.htm)

Neat system though :) I like to think of it as the Amiga to the C64's MSX

I think it should've stayed that way. One of the characters even made to become a Street Fighter III character Urien

This one, by Toshiaki Fujino of Triangle Service, can be found on the INH DVD "The Shooting Love" (as a floopy disk image, playable in emulator):

In the booklet "Project Moon" is mentioned on page84.

Enix's Code Zero (published by Random House) is another good X68000 exclusive. The graphics are a bit of a cross between Raiden and one of the PCE Star Soldier games.

You can get the typical "wide shot", a narrow but stronger shot, and also a 2-option formation. Like Twin Cobra, you find hidden stars for bonus points- but some of the locations are not as obvious.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I hear good things about Mid-Garts, and that one appears to be exclusive. Emulation of it isn't great, though.

Now there's something I'd like to know - is X68000 emulation dead where it stands, or is someone making progress on it? I know the two half-way decent emulators for it are Japanese made, so it's hard to know about this kind of thing, but still, I want to know.

Hmm, according to the info I have, it was released by Denpa, but who knows, maybe it's not accurate.

Thanks, CIT! Wasn't A-Jax exculsive to the X68000?

Oh, BTW, Yakumo, the guy who does the Retro Core series, told me in an email that an X68000 Special is in the works! :D

You may be right. It's by Dempa. I just didn't figure out that Dempa was a commercial publisher.

Dempa may be most known nowadays as the company that owns Micomsoft, which is the company that makes the X-RGBs. I don't think they put out games anymore, probably since the X68k days.. :)

Thunder Force II on X68000 has a few exclusive levels and weapons not found in the Megadrive/Genesis version.

probably the most famous X68000 exclusive shmup is Nemesis '90

Alien Syndrome on X68000 while not exclusive to the X68000, is exclusively the only home port of the game that is arcade-quality. everything else was a hugely downgraded translation or a complete remake in the case of the modern PS2 Sega Ages version.

Mid-Garts and Star Trader aren't exclusive --- they were both on the PC-88/98, and Mid-Garts was on MSX.

By the way, Mid-Garts is really cool once you get past the first level.

Thanks for the info. I edited my list. That really doesn't leave the X68k with too many exclusives now. :?

Still, for some of these games the x68000 is by far the best way to go. A few are still PCB and x68000 only (A-Jax should be one), and many others just had home console releases. Also, the Dempa Micomsoft releases are awesome. For the time, it was x68000 or nothing for most of these. Good prices on most of these even today.

Except that the X68000 "Star Trader" is completely different than any of the other releases. It's a pure shooter - that is, it lacks the ADV backend (or frontend, depending on your perspective) of the PC-88/98 releases. I've always been a bit curious about the X68000 game. It appears to be only partially complete. The 1st 2 stages have power-ups but the other 5 don't. Also the game lacks scoring completely.

It even doesn't seem official for that matter. Copyright information is curiously lacking from the title screen, although I do recall seeing Nihon Falcom with another company, Brother I think, in the credits. I don't recall ever seeing the X68k Star Trader listed in any fan-compiled catalogs either. The game uses a non-specific sound driver (PMD) rather than a Falcom-specific one, so that makes me question Falcom's involvement as well. A very odd title if you ask me - one that I'd love to have more information on. Not a bad game for what's there either.

There's also a hentai game called Cosmic Psycho which has some shooting stages, don't know if that'd count. Not x68k exclusive.

I don't see Undeadline on there. Also, Dive On is doujinsoft (source: TOSEC, Google).

Interesting info you had there, Darkwolf. I looked around a bit, and it appears that Star Trader *was* an official release, published by Takeru (who published a bunch of stuff) and developed by Brother. Falcom wasn't actively involved, but then, they weren't actively involved with X68000 Ys, either. (To my knowledge, the only X68k game Falcom did themselves was Ys 3.)
