Cho Ren Sha 68K Impossible 2-ALL -_-"...

Image

So much to say! Most important: this run was on PX68k so it is accurate for FPS & hardware slowdown. The hardware slowdown is the important thing! Obviously, this game and mode was balanced with it. If you try this using Windows EXE it will be much, much harder because there is zero hardware slowdown when have 100+ revenge bullets on screen lol @_@!~

I first tried Impossible using Windows EXE (like my Normal 2-ALL) so have quite a lot of experience with it... but eventually put game away because got very frustrated with the crazy # of revenge bullet.

When I switched to emulate on PX68k instead... wow. Really very big difference!

After switch, take around 10 more hours to achieve 2-ALL clear!! Also: the 2-ALL clear was achieved on the first attempt of reaching second loop. The main struggle is really the first loop to build score.

For me, the most important thing was: hold first life as long as possible on first loop. My run actually was very messy... hell a lot of shield loss during first loop... but I was very lucky to recover each one, and so only my first actual loss of life was only at Stage 0 on the first loop! This was very lucky! Actually, my goal for Impossible... was just to do 1-ALL... and I would be very happy. But I started second loop with only one life lost... so I immediately took it seriously... but this was my first exposure to it on Impossible.

Immediately, I felt second loop of Impossible was easier than first loop. I think... will even say it is easier than Normal second loop. Main reason is the revenge bullets are VERY clean and easy to read, because the bullet pattern used for them, is very good. My main complaint with Normal 2-ALL was the revenge bullet used the most common bullet sprite in game, so hard to read. Not the case this time!

Also: second reason is: because the revenge bullets in second loop Impossible are big and flashing... they generate more hardware slowdown. This is most easy to notice when they spawn, because the revenge bullet spawn on enemy explosion, so... you get a brief sudden "lag" when they appear because there is a lot going on at once on screen. This allows you to quickly read them, then reposition ship. So... even though the damn revenge bullet direction is random... but because there is now brief lag when they spawn, it is much more realistic to read and dodge.

Another important thing to learn for Impossible: is when to intentionally lose shield instead of using bomba. So, example: if I am now stuck and about to die, but I know my bomba stock is 3... and I know that next item carrier it is safe to do 3x power-up pickup... then I will choose to lose shield instead of bomba. Because that way... when I do 3x collection... I will get shield back, then +1 bomba. But if I had used bomba instead... then I will minus 1 bomba, and then plus 1 from item carrier... and will still be same.

The biggest struggle in Impossible... especially first loop... is very often, doing 3x power-up pickup is damn difficult. So it is important to know when it is safe to do it, so you can try rebuild resources. This is how I only manage to take first loss of life very late in the first loop X_X!~

I will definitely say... if you can clear 1-ALL in Impossible... then you can definitely do 2-ALL. One big advantage with Impossible is... it seems that enemy give more score. So... because of that... it is less important to do 3x power-up pickup. You can play 100% survival and only occasionally do 3x power-up pickup when it is very safe... and you will still score well enough to reach 7-8 extends stock by end of first loop. Then... after that... when going into second loop... you will be building more and more extends as both score and extends stock keep building up.

Overall... very highly recommend this mode! Thank you everyone for encouragement to do this... and especially suggestion to emulate instead of playing Windows EXE lol!! Wouldn't do this otherwise!!~

And finally: the damn Stage 4 boss (the many blimp that spawn one after another) is 100x easier on PX68k than Windows EXE. That was always my run-ender when playing on Windows EXE... usually will always have to use 5 bomba because the blimp shoot out 100's of revenge bullet and without hardware slowdown it is very hard to dodge... then would usually lose at least one extend here, then because ship power-up all lost will start Stage 5 in very bad position... and then just keep chain death from there. This single fight being easier was one of the big advantages!

Having poor Stage 5 after that blimp boss is also bad news because the Stage 5 boss have a million destructible parts which means whole fight have a lot of revenge bullets, lol. Fking revenge bullets zzz.

Finally cracked 9 billion in RefRain Prism Memories! Was hard stuck in the 7 billion range for a while, and now I’m seeing how 10 billion+ is possible.

Also, noticed some funny messages coming from the options at the end—almost want to watch them for an entire playthrough to see what other interesting things they say.

Ah! My DoDonPachi DaiOuJou journey has finally concluded, hah! I must have opened up the ol' candy cab (gotta manually set that PGM cart to free play each and every time upon boot up) a hundred times by now :P But yep, finally got the 1CC. I didn't think I'd get it honestly (always happens this way, huh?) - I'd been dancing around it for months - was relatively consistent with 5-stock 1CCs, had a few 3-stock runs where I lost it at the final boss, and even had a 5-stock 1CC where I finished with enough lives where it would have been a 1CC on default settings.

But sat down today, had everything set to default - and I changed one thing in the strategy - I had never been able to get enough points for the second score extend, so I told myself this time to just go wild with hypers to see how it feels, using them liberally in hopes to build enough chain and score for once - and it worked! I got that second extend (just barely!), reached the final boss with enough resources, dodged smartly, and pulled off the 1CC - boom, that great dopamine hit when you finally achieve it!

I'm really glad to cap off DaiOuJou. It's a great game, and probably the toughest 1CC I've gotten so far. Honestly, it took a while to grow on me - I played it following Ketsui and was initially disappointed in its bullet patterns compared to those very dynamic ones of the former (Ketsui). But after really getting into it, it was just the comparison that was throwing me off - DaiOuJou is awesome in its patterns, bosses, aesthetic - everything - such an awesome game to dedicate the time to. I'm not sure what game I'll take on next, but whew, I'm ready for a well-deserved break I think :)

There's the IGS PGM cart of DoDonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou "Black Label" arcade stg to try your hand at if you've already 1CC'ed the PGM cart of DoDonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou "White Label."

Yeah, I played it via the IGS PGM cart, and on boot up it gives you the option of "version 1 or 2", White Label or Black Label - I chose to take on Black Label from the beginning. I hear White Label is more difficult - maybe someday, heheh.

Nice Nahar! I spent some time with Espgaluda with a 1CC in sight, but just kept getting whomped by the notorious last phase of the final boss - props on overcoming that!

Espgaluda is a good one. The last boss fight is notoriously nasty but the rest of the game up until stage 5-2 is pretty manageable. I think it was one of my fastest CAVE clears at three days of practice (In fact, it's the only CAVE game I've ever reached the last stage on full lives), but also, one of the most satisfying and stressful because of the huge difficulty spike with 20-ish minutes of gameplay on the line at the end.

It's certainly an interesting difficulty balance, and I wouldn't want every game to be like that, but as a one off, I think it's kind of neat. Makes the game very memorable.

I think just like you. I don't think every game would feel nice with this kind of progression, but Espgaluda manages it well.

Dodonpachi - 1-ALL Clear (A-L)

It’s a pretty terrible run, truth be told. I haven’t got much time to practise nowadays. It kinda sucks, but there isn’t much I could do unfortunately.

Sonic Wings / Aero Fighters 1 with Kohful
https://youtu.be/5Wwtgk0qhYo

What I like about this run is my pointlessly risky maneuvering at 00:45; my cheeky dodging at 7:47; the way I managed to quickly and safely take out both turrets at 10:16 (which is often a fine line to walk)—allowing me to clear the spread-shot phase using just a single bomb—and, above all, the bomb-less victory against the Monkey Boss! 😄 At 8:45, I lost control a bit due to the helicopter, which meant I "had" to use a bomb—and consequently couldn't execute my clean, two-bomb strategy against the boss.

Here is my 1LC run of Sonic Wings:
https://youtu.be/5Wwtgk0qhYo

What I liked: At 03:12, that shot from the battleship was dangerous. My dodge right after felt really satisfying! 😄
05:33 also felt somewhat excessively risky—looking back on it now—but I was afraid that a fighter jet might suddenly swoop in and pick me off at the edge of the screen.
The boss fight at 7:41 was also pretty close at times, considering how narrowly I dodged on a few occasions.
At 8:35—something that rarely happens—I failed to destroy the building quickly enough before it started to fire. However, that actually made it look a bit more exciting, and it didn't hinder me too much (well, it cost me two bombs in the end, since the helicopter made things a bit too hot for me right after. But my remaining stock was still sufficient for my 2-bomb strategy for the boss).
At 10:57, it was cool that I managed to successfully dodge that spread shot. It’s sometimes a bit uncertain whether the aiming will work out exactly as you hope—at least regarding the *second* shot, which the enemy didn't survive long enough ...
The 2nd Loop battle against the battleship, starting at 13:10, also went really well.
The assault on the castle in Germany, starting at 15:30, also went quite smoothly—even if I did end up taking a completely senseless hit right afterwards.

Got my Shienryu clear after a couple months of on and off playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY14iIVlp9w&t=519s

Being more used to Daioh, I was trying to play this just like that and was getting frustrated for a while. It felt like lightning was the main weapon to use for the majority of the game with the others being afterthoughts, although I finally came to realize that wasn't really the case and started to adjust to its own quirks (missiles still suck though). In the end, I think it's a phenomenal game and more than worthy follow up to Daioh. Hoping to get the 2-ALL for both later down the line but I don't think that will be anytime soon though!

1CC in Homura! Yay! I started a run that was pretty good score wise (for being me), I was closing in on 1,000,000,000 but then I died at the TLB... I thought "oh for heavens sake, oh well, let's just do a practice run to see if I can do it at all, forget about the score". Then I managed to do it. Well, barely. No lives or bombs left when TLB went down and a score just above 600,000,000 (I didn't care about any scoring what so ever, I just killed everything as fast as I could). But I'll take it. A bad 1CC and a run that was close to 1,000,000,000 is good enough for me, now I can go ahead and write the review.

Crimzon Clover Arcade Unlimited 1CC complete!!

Image

This game was my first introduction to the bullet hell genre over a decade ago so finally being able to knock this one out has been surreal. There's been times over the years where I wondered if I only enjoy Crimzon Clover so much because I had been attached to it when I was inexperienced with the genre but nah, every time I come back to it and continue working through the list of modes I keep appreciating it more and more. Unlimited mode was a blast to learn, there's a large number of resources but you really have to stay on top of your routing and improvisional skills--strikes a great balance between having leeway that's still paired with tough consequences for not knowing how to use your tools efficiently. This grind went much faster than I expected but it definitely helped to be able to use so many routes from the Faith No-Miss run as well as M's commentated run, this was my first attempt reaching the stage 5 boss on a full run and it came down to the wire so I could imagine it would've been just as easy for me to choke at the last moment and need to take longer before getting it.

Congrats! The power of "ah fuck it" must have buffed you. And with the extends being relatively fast to reach, there was no real need to score all that much just to get the clear indeed. 1bil on that other run is not bad either for "scorevival" purposes, my 1CC is around that too, even if there's obviously a lot more room for score improvements.
Looking forward to the review!

Thank you! :) Yes, I absolutely believe it did. It was a similar story with DOJ, I had been feeling I should be able to do it for days and then a late afternoon "last try"-run started off really bad and I decided to just play it through almost in an irritated state of mind and then I got the 1CC. I'm doomed to have my 1CCs look sloppy and badly practiced! ;)

Fun review! It feels kinda nostalgic in how to-the-point it is and how it is structured, with game mechanics explanations and your opinion on the game. I agree there's those input issues and stuff, no idea why the port didn't have a true bomb button rather than a macro. Lack of training mode is quite a bummer indeed given Skonec's Psy2 port on PS2 being so fleshed out in comparison. I also had to use save states to practice.

If you haven't played Shikigami games, I'd definitely recommend them because they are pretty fun and scratch a relatively similar itch. Your past self might have been onto something even if coming from a completely different angle

Thank you kindly! Yes, I was going after sort of a list - I wrote down the points I wanted to make ("what do I personally want to know about a shmup?") and took it from there. :)

The more I hear about the PS2 port of Psy2 the more I regret getting the DC version. :D I might have to try and get the PS2 version as well, but I suspect it hasn't got any cheaper over the years.

I have one of them, Castle Shikigami 2: War of the worlds, on PS2 but I want to remember there's something wrong with it (Removed content? Bad port? I can't remember!).

I'm just the same. I've not yet had a single good complete run of anything.
I always start succumbing to restartitis once I reach a critical level of familiarity with a game, which is probably a big part of the problem. Should keep playing it out every time.
