Gradius Generation BLACK LABEL out now!

Post by allanrps »

Hello friends! I'm new here, glad to be among good company. Someone over on r/shmups recommended that I share my new project release on this forum, so without further ado...

Image

Classic Gradius gameplay packed into a fully featured handheld shmupping experience. Complete with modern enhancements such as dynamic rank display, high visibility bullets, a practice mode with upgrade selection, and much much more.

Best of all, it is FREE. If you have an original GBA and cartridge of the Japanese release "Gradius Generation" that is. πŸ˜‰

The goals of this release were to give the GBA (and small emulation handhelds) one great shmup; one that's worth sinking your teeth into, practicing, going for runs, big scores, etc -- and one that can be experienced in it's totality on the go on original hardware, without resorting to save states or other malarky. Gradius Generation (or Gradius Galaxies in the west) was as close to this as we got for the GBA, being one of basically two shmups worth your time on the handheld. It had great art, tight level design, and ostensibly most of what you want in a Gradius release, with a few omissions really holding it from securing it's place in the Gradius pantheon. A lack of dynamic rank and score based extends was particularly lamentable, and this project was originally conceived to solve those two issues.

This project became a total re-haul of the original title; upgrades ranging from the cosmetic, to mechanical, to extra content, you can hardly find a corner of the game code that was untouched. New custom illustrated ship sprites, new weapons, a brand new enemy (the Option Hunter! An absolutely necessary addition), enhanced bosses, bugfixes, significantly improved performance, and most importantly dynamic rank and an engaging scoring system that encourages you to play at high rank and truly master the game. The list goes on and on--and there is a manual outlining how the mechanics work and all changes--but don't worry about that, just download the game and play it! (the patch! you have to own the game!)

I truly believe this game has now secured its spot as a Gradius classic that that can stand shoulder to shoulder with other entries in the series. I would be really happy to see fans of the series experiencing and appreciating another great Gradius game. I also truly believe that I achieved my goal; the gba now has a shmup that will reward investment with great gaming experiences, and a game that you can sink your teeth into. Now that development is finished I will be focusing on getting a 2-All clear on original hardware, and then there are higher loops, scoring runs, different loadouts... The GBA is so back!

Patch your rom with "flips" or other similar patching utility.

Oh, by the way, the real game is Loop 2. Loop 1 is just there for the purists that want to earn it.

You should reupload the image on the post to postimages or imgbb cause cloudflare at romhackingnet prevents it from hotlinking (and it's a bad habit anyway).

Do not use imgur as its blocked in UK or something.

Cool! I will try it this weekend. Would you say this an okay entry point to Gradius? I'm yet to play one.

I'd say so! I'm not exactly a Gradius vet (most of my play has been on gradius 1 and the various msx games) but I do think that the level design in this game is classic gradius, with set piece after set piece, methodical routing, etc. One really cool thing that I came to realize over time is pretty much everything in this game is a nod to previous games. Not terribly original perhaps, but everything has its own flair that I find really cool.

Awesome!

After playing this I will probably check the other games in the series to see what's up with them

So with the right patcher, this Gradius Generation Black Label d/l, and the JPN GBA Gradius Generation rom, it'll be playable on the KriKzz "Everdrive GBA X5" flashcart setup then?

It's awesome to play the USA GBA Gradius Galaxies variant stg on the GBA SP and the GBA Micro setup (the Gameboy Micro has a resolution of 240 x 160 at best).

It's like DoDonPachi Black Label came into the hardest shmups game ever creation than Steel Vampire, I remember that Gradius GBA before.

Should be playable on any flashcart that is capable of playing the original. Nothing crazy going on under the hood here, just good ol' fashioned machine code. Most of my testing eas done on an everdrive iv

I am disappointed at one thing in particular.

You did nothing to fix the godawful music. :(

First thing I thought yesterday - is there a music volume slider?

Heya allanrps, I watched your short preview gameplay and the game itself is very improvement and much better than the original works, But it's unofficial mod and Gradius GBA hack rom, It's pretty good hard time your programming work.

Starting with any Gradius game (apart from 3,4 or even 5 as they are super tough and unforgiving) is a good intro but I'd make sure you try the original arcade game either using emulation or one of the ports (PS1/Saturn or the new Gradius Origins version). It's still a brlliant game and you will see all of the ideas it introduced that all the sequels riff upon.

I feel like Gradius 2 might be the best starting point, though you'll definitely want to play the entire series to see the evolution-- including the Salamander sidestories.

Yeah this whole series is so quality, there's only a few games but it still feels like there's not enough time to give each game it's the attention it deserves. For me anyway, I'm not exactly churning out 1cc's lol.

I agree start with 1 though, it's crazy to think that this game was so groundbreaking at the time and has still is so relevent today.

Glad to hear you're having fun!

I released a small update refining/toning down the enemy fire rate. After getting feed back and sinking more time into playing (without being bit-drunk from long dev hours), I decided the difficulty was a bit too oppressive on loop 2, the intended difficulty.

someone on romhecking.net posted this in a review, and holy smokes is this cool.

Now this gets me inspired to do a music mod. Trying to see if I can get in contact with the artist.

Hot damn. This is awesome. How's the slowdown in some of the more intense sections? Curious if this is one of those games/hacks that benefits from an overclock or the removal of sprite limits. This looks rad.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Slowdown was notably improved over the base game, but it certainly still exists. The worst you will see is fully powered up falchion B twin lasers on stage 5 while firing all weapons, where slowdown is a bit extreme. With other shot types and stages slowdown is pretty minimal.

Sprite limit is not an issue here (gba actually does not have sprite limits, only a per scanline draw limit), and I do not know of a gba emator with an overclock feature which does not affect frame timing.
