The 'What Shooter are you playing now' Thread...

Post by Harlequin »

I am surprised there is not a thread like this here.
Its on every game forum i have come across :)

I am playing: (both PS2)

Raiden III

I love this game. Glad i got it. Never seen it in the arcade
and took a chance. Its Raiden and its COOL!

Ibara

Yikes! This game is hard, really hard for me. I will persist
with it as i have read other shooters are similiar in gameplay
and want to try them also.

Cheers

Shippu Mahou Daisakusen / Kingdom Grandprix - Well, I just beat this one. It was an interesting experience, but pretty frustrating (the other competitors who are constantly in the way). The route I picked was also far too easy, I think I managed to beat it within three hours or so, although I only did the first loop. Still, it's an incredibly good looking game with nice music and lots of fun ideas.

Border Down - On and off... There are so many ways to play this game, and no matter how you do it, it's incredibly hard. I love it to death, but I'm often discouraged by the insane difficulty.

Metal Black - I just got this for saturn. It's such a good game, I'll see if I can beat it anytime soon, it's pretty mean.

All Mame. All 1cc attempts - listed in order of progress.

Gunbird - I'm not having much trouble with this one. The patterns are fairly simple to memorize and the screen never gets too hectic. I'm pretty much randomly playing through it with each character depending on what i feel like at the moment. Valnus is obviously the easiest but i like Yuan Nang the best. She's so hot!!! I mean, cool... I can usually make it to about 1-5 before i even die once.

Strikers 1945 II - This game is killer. I'm really digging the graphical style and i've always enjoyed the 'futuristic WWII' theme. Of course i'm using the Shinden because i can't resist the urge to let my wingmen do the damage for me :) . Once i get a 1cc a that i'll start messing around with the other ships more. My only complaint is that the BGM is so low, yet so good! I just wish the sound effects didn't cover it up so much.

Battle Garegga - Another game with great sound. I'm not having very much trouble at all with those 'hard to see' gray bullets everyone complains about. The medalling is absolutley addicting and the graphics are blissful. Wild Snail is my weapon of choice simply because it's the coolest looking. This game is balls hard though - i cannot yet beat it in less than 6 continues. The end of stage 4 marks the first of many many deaths every time. I love the announcer's voice in this game...

Viper: Phase 1 - When i was 17 i could nail this game on a quarter in the arcade with 5 people looking over my shoulder while sipping a slush puppie. I'm not sure what happened but somewhere along the line my skills must have monkeyed around power lines. I've been re-attempting this feat in MAME, with every version, in the comfort of my own home nearly everyday for the last 4 months and have yet to make it past 1-5 without continuing. I think i have a bad case of the think-i-cants :(

I'm also messing around with Gradius Gaiden on PSP. Pretty soon i may give Ikaruga another go round since i can tate my tv with ease and i'm looking forward to Raiden III/IV. Gradius V has been calling my name a bit lately as well...

Ibara
Mushihimesama
Zero Gunner 2
Vulcan Venture
Recca

Someone recently commented that the strategy guides here are an underused resource. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ibara and Mushi threads, because they've really helped me get stuck into both of 'em. I'm now starting to play on Mushi's Maniac mode properly, after a few successful 1CCs in Normal, and I'm *this close* to an Ibara 1CC. Hails, and cheers!

Cant decide which to play, just received Garegga today but I've began making steady progress with Dragon Blaze. :?:

They're both fantastic.

I'm experiencing a renewed interest in Air Gallet (MAME). Such a high quality shmup, yet rarely mentioned.

Other than that, the usual Cave PS2 stuff, plus Trizeal.

Under Defeat

Still playing this. Its so much fun. I really enjoy it a lot. However, I do wish I could get around to picking up another PS2 (JP or Modded) so I can play some more ESPGaluda and try Ibara. Plenty of time for that later I suppose.

It's great, but very hard. I played it for a bit before, don't think I ever got past ST4.

Strikers 1945 - Just got the Korean Strikers+Gunbird package, and while the port of Strikers 1 and 2 are annoying as hell because you can't save anything (Even from switching from Strikers 1 to 2), it's so damned fun. Glad I found this game through this forum and mame.

Shadow of the Colossus - Oh boy, is this ever an amazing game. Camera issues aside, its graphics are quite stunning, even over half a year after its release. Cuts out a lot of the fat that's in most modern games, and leaves in some amazing action that never dulls because you aren't spoiled by thousands of idiotic enemies.

Gunbird 2 is my main course, and if I fire up MAME then I play the sweet, addicting, and evil Batrider.

Battle Garegga -- I'm trying to bombmilk 3, and do the medal rails on 4 correctly. I might be able to break 8m before hitting stage 6 doing this.

Raiden Fighters Jet -- Hopefully I can break 70M, which is only possible if I learn stage 30.

Omega Fighter -- This game has charm by the boatload. I can't get past stage 3 as of current, but whatever!

Warrock -- A cheap free clone of Battlefield 2. The physics engine is so broken and hilarious and everyone else sucks.
so long and tanks for all the spacefish

Finally been able to play again (having been out wih contused crossbone for some weeks) I am really enjoying my Giga Wing on the DC once again!
Even managed to more than double my previous high scores this week and improving everyday it seems. Won't post my score till it's well in the double digit trillions though. ;)

For a bit of change I'll fire up the PS2 for a bit of Salamander 2 once in while. :)

Taking a break from Under Defeat at the moment.

I just finished Run=Dim on Wonderswan (thanks again @ Super Laydock!), a very easy game.

Other than that I'm mainly playing Espgaluda now.

Ibara keeps kicking my arse, and I keep coming back for more. ESPgaluda is a lot of fun, but I'm a long way from that 1cc. Just starting with Dragon Blaze, but I suck so far. Just picked up Castle Shikigami II and I'm trying to get over the disappointment of the lack of 60Hz support and the fact that all the story scenes have been chopped out of the UK version  I thought publishers stopped pulling that crap ten years ago.

Not exactly. We have 8.5's thread here in Off Topic, though it's not specifically shooters.

I have been super busy so I haven't played much. I'll be working on Shienryu ST-V/PS2 and Metal Slug MVS whenever I have time.

DDP for Mame...

I was playing R-Type Delta from my PS2... but the disk is too waxed with scratches to play smoothly: music cuts, the game freezes inbetween menus. I'm totally P.O.ed!!

I'm shopping for Gradius V...
