Bassa-Bassa wrote: Fri May 29, 2026 7:59 am They're using once again their Takeoff team, which was on the good side. The concerns should be placed more on how good the original ports in that regard were. Hardly they'll be improving over that.
Yeah, I look to their Deathsmiles I&II and Akai Katana releases, which were both pretty well done as far as accuracy to the 360 ports. Does seem very unlikely that they will improve over the 360 source material though.

For home ports, I'm still inclined to keep playing the 360 just because I can do that over RGB on a nice CRT. Still gonna be better, or at least no worse, from a latency perspective.

The arrange soundtrack is a pretty cool feature though! Daisuke Matsumoto and Yosuke Yasui? Yeah I'll definitely want to check that out. Soundtrack CD alone is enough to convince me to get the physical box here. Pretty reasonably priced too, $48 USD for a physical release with full CD.
Emerl wrote: Fri May 29, 2026 4:54 pmTo my eyes, it looks like they've gotten rid of the ugly scaling/filter that the 360 version had.
You can already turn off the smoothing filter in the 360 release, it's an option in both games.
I don't own the 360 versions but a few knowledgeable and enthusiastic people like the Cave forums admin have commented that the modern ports improved on the slow down accuracy and are sometimes closer to the PCBs compared to the 360 versions.

It's also funny how he keeps dissing the Switch versions due to lag and in the end buys them and is ok with them, a happy end I guess.

So assuming this is true, it seems they use the 360 versions and then do some changes. Personally I enjoyed the Switch versions of Deathsmiles, Akai Katana Shin, DDP SDOJ (different publisher), Under Defeat HD, R Type Delta HD (no 360) and Mamorukun Curse, so I'm looking forward to this release.

Kind of wish they did Ibara/Muchi instead, but I'll take it.

I don’t really remember the ports being laggy? Might have to give it a go when I get home
Yes, very bad >.<"... Faith play both MMP/PS in both Xenia and FBNeo. In Xenia anyway, MMP/PS lag is worse than SDOJ... and SDOJ lag there is quite horrible x_x"...

Managed find more info about this here for you to see:

1. https://web.archive.org/web/20200119185 ... est-setup/

2. https://web.archive.org/web/20200119185 ... -examples/

3. https://web.archive.org/web/20200119185 ... -database/

Can see for PS it is 5 frames! And SDOJ 4 frames. Definitely notice this, because very recently started to play PS and tried it on Xenia first and it is really very bad!!!

Really hope they fix the lag otherwise it is really pointless, because game also look so much better on FBNeo.

Even if turn blur filter off in 360 port, it still look blur!!

That is another thing... I assume that MMP/PS not have any HD graphics assets like DFK, SDOJ and Futari? So really important they at least make sure it is not blurry!

Your wish has been granted. The UK/EU editions have what looks like 4 different covers from their promo image including the full PS artwork. They're available from VGP if you're stateside.

I have found a physical edition (Amazon UK) but it seems to be the special edition, hopefully they'll release a standard version too as it will go nicely with my other physical cave shmups on switch.
This is what Clear River Games did with Operation Night Strikers, special edition only at retail. So standard release is likely to be digital only for Europe, or import a standard edition from Japan/Asia (probably costing the same as the Europe retail edition anyway)

Wait so the non-Japanese release does have reversible covers in the special edition? But for some reason, this time there is no Japanese special edition except a bunch of retailer exclusive items that come with a regular physical edition. Kind of a weird release from a Japan perspective then.

Yes but there is no standard edition in Europe. Just the one edition for each region at the moment.

jeez, I took a look at that list in the 3rd hyperlink and it looks like akai katana, deathsmiles II, dodonpachi saidaioujou, guwange, and muchi muchi pork are all the same, with pink sweets being +1 frame more. I'm gonna go back to not really worrying about it and enjoying the releases for what they are
Spoiler

I usually avoid that source since it's a pretty negative vibe and I rarely walk away from it feeling happier - head in the sand for me please

Yosuke Yasui is a huge plus, I love this guy's perfect shmup soundtracks.
Also as a PC only player I love the fact that City Connection brings this to Steam as well.
Futari next please!

So I wasted my money on the Xbox 360 port for my birthday for nothing, then. Oh well, Yosuke Yasui does a lot of banger soundtracks anyway.

I was really surprised to hear about xbox MMP's substantial lag - while I have tried again and again to get into SDOJ but couldn't due to the constant feeling of "drat, I thought I dodged that!", I never noticed any lag in Muchi.

Probably because of two thing! First: bullet speed in SDOJ is evil >.<"... many times in SDOJ have some fk lonely snipe bullet coming at light speed to kill you... so input lag matter a lot more in SDOJ. Second: bullet size and visibility @_@"... SDOJ have a lot of tiny bullets that sometimes, with all bright colors, can take more time for eyes to lock onto... with MMP I find bullet size on average much larger, and also they pop up more compared to background... so you spot them faster too!~

I didn't at the time, but since playing in MAME it's my preference now and I sold my doublepack.

I'll try the MAME-version again, but the reason I play most shooters on Xbox is that my bartop arcade uses one as its brain.

It's not, don't bother playing it.

Was also coming here to champion Arrange mode. I actually feel very similarly about Espgaluda II, in that I don't love the Vanilla game but the two Arrange modes on the home ports are pure joy.

Akai Katana Shin/Slash is another great one. I don't play the base game.

What's that about Pink Sweets not being beatable without glitches? And not to bother playing it? Can you guys elaborate a bit on that?

It’s beatable, though difficult and mechanically unusual. It still enjoys a vibrant reputation among the small community of people who still play it religiously.

The chorus of “unbeatable” claims seem to stem from people who were initially filtered by the game and its unusual style, and who are frustrated that it doesn’t play as intuitively as they’d like. That’s all fine - it’s an acquired taste - but its supposed impossibility is more a collective expression of frustration than incontrovertible fact.

There’s a lives glitch that these same people like to fancy is necessary to beat the game. But it isn't.

Go in with beginners’ mind, learn to tango with the game’s mechanics, and then decide what you think. After all this, I’ll say: not really my cup of tea.

I've never triggered it, so I'm not exactly sure if this is the case, but didn't the port remove the infinite lives glitch?

Yes, only on the PCB original.

There's a setting in the options to patch the lives bug so you can play with or without it.

I still have the double pack. I play it with a 360 and RGB SCART cable with a rotated CRT as I do with all my 360/Saturn/PS1,2/GC verticals with a TATE option. I"m not good enough to notice the lag and at my age am unlikey to. It's a shame the games didn't get an HD mode but I've enjoyed the pack.

Do I recall correctly that there were several revisions of the arcade version that fixed/adjusted a bunch of things but never took out that particular glitch, or one version removed it and the next one brought it back, something along those lines? I seem to remember some such weirdness or other being discussed Back In The Day.

Sounds like I was wrong and there's a setting to enable it as DavyK pointed out. I haven't booted PS in a while, so I was unaware. Not sure of the PCB revision history (calls PCEngineFanX).
