The Shienryu PS1 port (aka the USA PSX port of "Gekioh: Shooting King" released as a budget PSX stg title with an MSRP of $9.99 usd back in the day) doesn't have tate and only yoko + a cool FMV opening intro worth checking out whereas with the SS port, it does have both yoko & tate just like with the Sega ST-V cart version of the same name (which plays in tate only).

So frustrating we're getting the Playstation versions of these games. PSX Sonic Wings Special was already a slight downgrade from the Saturn version, but getting THIS version of Shienryu is just a crime; it was correctly priced for its era due to it's shit lack of features and awful screen options.

I guess that means a future ACA port won't be total shite like the other Neo Geo ACA releases in terms of features, so that's a silver lining.
Viewpoint never belonged to Aicom even if they developed it (much like Pulstar didn't, either). It's entirely Sega's nowadays, and doesn't seem like they want their old games published by any other than themselves.

The “Arcade Archives” (ACA) series faithfully reproduces classic arcade game masterpieces, staying true to its original.
And then colloquially, it's often referred to as "AkeAke" from the Japanese side. A sort of portmanteau of the first sound of the Japanese characters in アーケードアーカイブス. Why do both "a ke" and "a ka i" turn into Ake? Beats me, just the way it is!

Right? I was already side eying the Sonic Wings Special PS1 release versus the Saturn one I already own, but Shienryu is a really significantly worse port.

I'm one of Arcade Archives' biggest fans. Like, objectively - I've bought every single release on Switch (and a handful on PS4 too!). And I've almost completely written Console Archives off already - tried out Ninja Gaiden II and Cool Boarders at launch just out of curiosity about the NES and PS1 emulation, but maybe I'm done. I already have all the NES through PS1 shooters I want, I don't care as much when it's a re-release of a PS1 game I already have, or a text-heavy Japanese-language only simulation game. Arcade is different, we get so many releases that are the first ever home port, or the first one that's as arcade accurate as today's emulation.
AGermanArtist wrote: Wed May 27, 2026 10:28 am The first update https://www.famitsu.com/article/202605/76097 I've bought a few of the recent games in their ACA2 format, but if PS6 is PS4 compatible, I don't think I'll continue.
So, ACA2 supposedly has VRR support that might actually make a difference. On Switch 2, that's only available in handheld/portable mode (the system does not support VRR on docked on-TV play).

Particularly for older games that ran at an odd 50-something frame refresh rate (Raiden Fighters, Xexex, etc.), VRR can allow for more accurate emulation and reduced screen tearing. Now, as a PRACTICAL matter... uh, does anyone have any good examples of ACA2 games that actually take decent advantage of that?

The only ones I've played in both ACA and ACA2 versions are Namco 3D stuff like Ridge/Rage Racer, and Namco was pretty good about having a really consistent 60fps frame rate so it's probably harder to notice anyway (and I was initially unaware of the VRR only on handheld mode thing for Switch 2). I guess the ACA2 time attack leaderboards have some value, but not much of my thing personally. And for all of the new releases that come alongside the ACA1 equivalent, the features I *do* care about that got introduced alongside ACA2, like extra save slots, quick rewind, better screen orientation options... those get included in both the ACA1 and ACA2 version.

Never ever found Akeake myself. In fact, it'd make no sense. Akeaka is actually something more official than colloquial - it's used in the official name of the Neo Geo series in order to make it shorter than it'd be with the whole phrase:

https://www.arcadearchives.com/title/ang-009/

The ACA thing is only for the Western version, I guess it was used instead of Akeaka, which makes little sense for a westerner, hence it only appears as such on the Neo Geo releases?

VRR matters a lot with some of these games. It's not a shmup, but one of my favorite examples is the Mortal Kombat games which run at 54Hz. Forcing that to 60 results in either the game running too fast or some visual artifacts. These are definitely games where the experience will be noticeably worse with ACA1 versions running on a PS5.

The difference is night and day.

At a conceptual level, agreed. But specifically for Arcade Archives:

1) Are there any existing Arcade Archives 2 releases where VRR is particularly noticeable to the point of justifying the slightly higher price over just buying the cheaper Arcade Archives 1 version (in the Sony and Nintendo ecosystems where that's an option, at least)?
2) Any existing Arcade Archives 1 releases people can think of that don't currently have an Arcade Archives 2 release, but would most stand to benefit from getting one due to VRR?

I've seen Xexex/Orius mentioned as another notable 54Hz(?) game, and remembering that it got one of Hamster's prime Christmas week Arcade Archives release slots one year I booted it up and in the "Preference Settings" (buried in the Game Settings menu where they often put little enhancements) there is an "Adjust Game Speed" option that "Replicates the game speed as it was in the original version of the game". What did they do there?

Once you remove the experience of being sat at an actual wheel, taking on 7 other randoms, it's a bit shallow with only one track. I recall the AI rubber banding was awful, a couple of cars would usually get ridiculously fast on the final lap - it was always one of the green cars that was much faster, like they modelled it on Michael Schumacher's Benetton. The only way I ever won vs. the CPU was when someone left a coin in the other green cab, so ol' Schumi didn't get to join the race

It's always nice to see a previously unreleased game, but one track vs. unfair AI is a hard sell for solo play. Shame they couldn't work online multiplayer in, but 4 player local makes for a nice retro party game
Cheers, confirm my thoughts - one for a sale, I feel.

First release all the inferior ports/versions. Then later you can provide the fans with the actual arcade/saturn experience and say to the fans: "hey, you wanted this, well, we listened! Here ya go, buddy!".

Shienryu's explosions on Saturn are so thunderously loud and clear. Your sub woofer will love it. Great music as well, the Saturn is really showing what sound it can generate!

FWIW, I could write an essay why I appreciate Star Force (arcade version) so much. It has very some very specific game mechanics that hasnt been done anywhere else since, like progression that is based strictly on your performance, and levels that are reskinned based on your progress. The whole thing is very subtle and cant be seen on videos, you have to really play the game to notice it. And its one of the VERY few shmups were enemy bullet Do NOT fly in uniform speeds, so everything is set for skill-based gameplay, keeping you on your toes constantly.

80’s Tehkan has my uttermost respect. They trailblazed genres in early 80’s when such things did not yet exist in video games, and since they had no one to copy from, they made some interesting creative design choices not often seen since. Bomb Jack, Star Force and Rygar are absolute game design masterpieces, and of course many home conversions lost some of the details in conversion.

For me this version of Shienryu is better than no Shienryu at all on modern consoles so I'm happy about the release. PS1 and Saturn (Gen 5) is my fav. original console era. With Console Archives in addition to Arcade Archives the next decade should be fine even if AAA gets more AI slop. I'll keep buying the older games because I don't own the consoles anymore (sometimes I use Saturn emulation on PC). I didn't buy Rohga because I have the Saturn Tribute version.

I think it has to do more with how PSX emulation is more widespread than Saturn emulation. Not to mention that the Shienryu is on Saturn based hardware. At least Daioh is already on ACA.

The ACA1 port of the Switch 1 based Ace Driver is listed with an MSRP of $14.99 usd and is a 192mb digital d/l at best. It requires a minimum of 2 coins to credit it up. The Switch's built-in gyroscope can be utilized to substitute in lieu of an analog steering wheel setup if so desired. Online ranking leaderboard support is available. Two different viewpoints are at your disposal: Driver's View and Behind the Wheel viewpoints.

Unfortunately, no online multi-player capability is offered nor implemented, thus making Ace Driver a single-player affair at best.

----------
Ace Driver has a silky-smooth 60fps framerate which is impressive and is presented in it's original 4:3 screen aspect ratio format. For maximum visual punch, playing on an 4:3 aspect ratio LCD-based projector will Ace Driver truly shine with a docked Switch setup -- it doesn't get any better than that, folks.
----------

Considering that Ace Driver has only just one track to race on, it's the classic Suzuka race course at it's best (as shown on the classic Namco's Pole Position II arcade game).

This is the very first time that Namco's Ace Driver has been released for home gaming consoles indeed and was regulated to being playable through Mame emulation.

You can pull into the pit lane but it won't affect your car and still drive through it at full speed without being penalized (it's an arcade F1 racer after all). How cool is that? If you drive into a sandy area, sand will stick on the tires and will eventually rub off as well.

You can change from "kph" to "mph" if so desired within the "Preference Settings."

----------
If scanlines are enabled, a smoothing filter is automatically applied also -- increase the Switch's screen overall brightness to compensate for lowered brightness if a scanline filter is applied.
----------

If you have an "eagle eye," you might spot the names of other famous Namco arcade games including Ridge Racer, Driver's Eyes, Starblade, MetalHawk and even Rally X amongst other titles shown in the background scenery. Yes, Ace Driver is running on Namco's System 22 arcade motherboard setup (which is the same for both Ridge Racer and Rave Racer indeed).

Yes, +1. It's pretty hilarious to think they're kicking off their new Console Archives line by baiting the Sega Saturn community with PSX versions to build future demand.

Ace Driver seems cool but the lack of tracks, multiplayer, and music really diminishes the appeal. Wishlist with hope for a sale, because I’m not getting 30 plays out of it (what I would have paid in the arcade).

For D,

Thanks for the tip of hooking up a 2.1 surround sound speaker setup with a Sega Saturn setup -- I'll have to give it a spin and really hear what it can do, audio-wise.

----------
I've got a Logitech Z313 2.1 surround sound speaker setup with included subwoofer that can output at 50 watts maximum -- would that type of setup be adequate enough with a Sega Saturn console setup?

Or would a SS --> audio amp receiver --> Logitech Z313 2.1 speaker setup be better?

I know that with the Sega Titan ST-V arcade motherboard setup, it can output in true stereo if you use an RCA phono audio harness setup hooked up to the ST-V pcb itself.

Even with the Taito G-Net arcade motherboard setup, it too, can output in true stereo sound with the appropriate RCA phono audio harness -- I've hooked up a pair of Sony passive powered bookshelf speakers rated at 100 watts @ 8 ohms directly to it and the Taito G-Net pcb didn't even break a sweat whatsoever + the on-board MOSFET audio heatsink remained "cool to the touch" as well. How cool is that?

Of course, arcade jamma pcbs are already amplified to begin with, hence being able to hook up some serious wattage passive powered bookshelf-based speakers to it is doable/possible nowadays.

I'm running this through
https://fosiaudio.com/products/fosi-aud ... -amplifier which I can highly recommend everyone to get. Cheap small and clarity you will not believe.
My speakers are Big old nasty Dali 107 speakers I got 28 years ago. Speakers are not that great at all, but somehow works with the extremely sharp crisp amp
The sub is the most expensive in the chain.
https://rel.net/products/t-9x I got it for a grand, demo model in the store.
While it is very good. cheaper brands/models might be adequate as well.

Gave it a shot - felt better than SWS at the very least. Trying SWS in DuckStation it didn’t feel much better, so guess the Console Archives release just picked up the awful input delay of the original release.

I thought one of you said Ace Driver had Suzuka as the one and only course? I've not played this one in 30 years so didn't question that statement, but it's immediately obvious once I started rolling that this definitely isn't Suzuka or really anything like it. I like the circuit a lot though and the nice blend that it has between a street course and one laid out in the countryside or permanent road course.

To anyone else buying Ace Driver, definitely make steering adjustments in the settings if you're on a gamepad. It's way too twitchy at the defaults. It starts out at 180 degrees and I put on another 80 or 90 degrees in the settings which has smoothed things out nicely on the PS4 with a gamepad. Alas I don't have a wheel/pedal setup for PS4 at the moment, but I bet that this one shines with the correct tools to control the game.

Be prepared to mirror drive on that last lap though. It's not hard to get into first, but once you do the AI in second place suddenly has a rocket strapped to it. Some of the most extreme rubber banding that I've seen in a long time. You'll probably only win if you can successfully block their attempts to pass.

Yes, I've noticed that the AI racers in Namco's Ace Driver are quite notorious for bumping into you from behind if you're slowing down whilst turning on a curved section of the track. The actual Ace Driver cabs featured motion-feedback based steering wheels + the 2-way shifter & gas 'n' brake pedals to complete the entire F1-inspired racing experience indeed.

At the very least with the ACA1 Switch 1 port of Ace Driver supports the Switch's built-in gyroscope functionality used for the analog steering or if you have a dedicated Switch steering wheel + gas & brake pedal setup, that'd be the ideal and better way to play it as originally intended like how it was in the arcades back in 1994. Great game with a properly-tuned spinner. Are there any other games from the canonical volumes of Egret II Mini releases that aren't yet available in ACA?

Lots. The majority, in fact - from my count below (please feel free to correct if I missed any), looks like 35/90 games of the full Egret II Mini library are also currently in ACA (bold/italic titles below). Counting Cameltry. Grabbed the full lists from https://curmi.com/egret-ii-mini-arcade- ... ion-part-1

At the current usual pace of one Taito ACA title per month, that would be a minimum of nearly 4 more years for ACA to get all of the 80 current Taito Egret II mini titles. Plus whatever other Taito and non-Taito games they release in further Egret II mini add-on packs, like the 10 Technos and DECO games in last year's add-on card (only 2 of which are on ACA now). Feels safe to expect another 10 game Egret II mini card release annually for a while more, which is what they've been doing and they just mentioned at last weekend's Shmup Fes that another one will be coming this year.
