No one, not Laos, not Nai, not H.S, not even the legendary Ex_Mosquito has cleared 2-4 on their first life in Donpachi.

Good Luck!
Eh, I just meant the first loop... I've actually 1CCed both loops of DonPachi before while not playing for score, but I have always died somewhere in loop #1. I'm going to try to remedy that.

YEAH!

Personally, I like the Miyamoto best due to its speed. I'd rather just outrun bullet spam than try to be a hero and dodge it all. The Miyamoto affords you that luxury with pure speed. Similarly, I also prefer the Blade Owl in Battle Bakraid (even though the Buster Lizard is slightly quicker).

I managed one of my four targets from last year (Sexy Paro clear).

This year:
Gradius II - clear first round
R-Type Final - clear (shouldn't be too much trouble)
V-5 - clear first round
Oshaberi Parodius - 1-life

1CC R-Type.

Then I will try R-Type II, or maybe Strikers 1945 II.

That's probably why you love it. Playing Radi like that means that the game is absolutely a piece of cake with no absolute diversion. If you want something like that, try UD - at least it's not easy.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

I second the motion that you need to get your hands on Under Defeat. Also, the reason I love Kenta Cho games is because they are simple, straightforward, dodge-bullets-and-shoot-baddies type shmups, so maybe check those out if you haven't.

I know how you feel though. Ikaruga confounds me. I can chain through the first level pretty well, but after that it just starts to blow my mind. So then I go play Under Defeat and I feel better.

And to stay on topic, I am keeping my goal low: I just want to break one million on UD, after that I can work on 1CC'ing the first loop.

I'm actually now really torn between buckling down on Garegga or Raiden Fighters 2. I'm tempted to change my mind and go for something like 11x,xxx,xxx on RF2. I've already 1-lifed this one and gotten to 90 mill. so that might be a bit more achievable since I still can't clear Garegga due to the final spamfest that is the last boss rush.

Try Strikers 1945. To me, this is as barebones as a shmup can get while being quite intense. And its somehow way better than 1945 II.

Hey guys yall are really nice blokes!
I have Under defeat and its great!
i also have 1945 for the saturn and enjoy that allot too.

I just dont want to miss out on being able to play and understand the more complex shmups.

Its a personal thing i guess..
I must also be a part of it!

Im figuring out radirgy quite well now which is a blessing!

So my aim this year is to learn the curve for all the complex shmups!

Don't start off with anything too complex. There are a LOT of forum favourites that fall under this category of very deep, complex, and very involving gameplay - Border Down, anything by Cave, anything by Raizing, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, among others - that would scare off anyone new to or returning to the genre. Go for something simple, fun and manageable, and work your way up, once your skill and confidence builds.

Some good suggestions already, such as Rajirugi (Radilgy), Under Defeat, most stuff from Psikyo (Strikers, Gunbird, Sengoku Ace/Blade), the Raiden series, anything from Toaplan.

If you're playing to compete, find something you enjoy and stick with it, until you reach a target. Best way to learn.

If you are dead set on understanding the more complex stuff, feel free to ask some questions in the Strategy Forum, most of the competitive players hang out in there. ^_-

As for me, just need to find the time to start playing again. Maybe pick up where I left off with Espgaluda and the Tateha 50mil+ trail, and a Garegga refresher course somewhere down the line.

Quite a lot of them. The absolute best version is Raiden Project on PSX, and for that you get Raiden 1 and 2 on one disc. If you're import savvy, you can also get Raiden DX on the PSX as well (which to me is the definitive Raiden around).

The Raiden games are also emulated via MAME. Not sure how accurate the emulation is at present.

I'm really hoping that I can 1CC Dodonpachi before the end of the year. Progress has been slow, but now that I know about the level 3 1up, nothing can stop me. Except perhaps Hibachi, but I'm trying not to think about having to do that bit.

1CC Psyvariar Revision. It's quite easy, but I haven't played it for a while. Actually I haven't shmupped at all for a while.

I probably should have really expanded my list with more shooter goals instead of just a paltry amount of goals. This year I want to achieve:

Gunbird (1-ALL or something) [Done]
Gunbird 2 (See above)
Imperishable Night (2+ Billion clear for easy and normal mode)
Armed Police Batrider (Improve my score for the Normal mode, and ALL the Advanced Course mode. I'll be happy if I settle for 4.5m in Normal mode...) [4.5m Normal mode - Done]
ESP Ra.De (Improve my score. I'd like to break 20m score if possible.)
Battle Garegga (Because I need to.)
Batsugun (I'd like to ALL the Normal and Special version. Also, Counter Stopping it would be awesome, but I would need to be really, really damn good at this.)

After messing around with a huge variety of shmups, I finally settled with Batrider; my short-term goal is to 1cc normal mode without the extra bosses, then with them - after that comes the dreaded advance course. Or maybe I finally will start using teams instead of single ships; or try clearing the boss mode - you see, I have both hands full with that title for months to come :D
