Best handheld for tate shmups?
Hello. Wich do you think is the best handheld for emulating tate shmups?
I was thinking in getting the TACO controller for my phone but im not sure if it will be great for that.
What are the options? Maybe a chinese handheld? I have the analogue pocket but the screen is too small for tate games.

Maybe the Abernic RG Cube XX or Magicx Zero 40.
I haven't used either, and both still have pretty small screens.
I wish there was an actual decent dedicated TATE option.

Somebody will let you know about it.

I've given this a lot of thought, and I decided to get the Retroid Pocket Classic, after trying the Anbernic Cube XX which is a very nicely built device but lacking in performance.
The Pocket Classic has an excellent, tall 1240x1080 (squarish) AMOLED screen and a Snapdragon-family octacore CPU which can play PS2 and Gamecube and Wii. (and Dreamcast of course). Also it can play Cave CV1000, which the Cube XX had no chance with. Honestly the screen is amazing and seeing Ikaruga, late Cave games, Gradius V and Gradius ReBirth running sweet on this thing is amazing. I'm probably going to do a youtube video. The screen is 6.5cm (2.56 inches) tall - 7.5cm wide

For Restart_Point,
Please do make a Youtube video of your Retroid Pocket Classic handheld with the Cave CV-1000 game of DoDonpachi Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou up and running on it -- that'd I like to see.
----------
And how is the Cave CV-1000 emulation, "performance-wise" and gameplay-wise," on the Retroid Pocket Classic might I ask?
----------
I know that Livewire did release a Switch port of Cave's DoDonpachi Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou running on the Switch 1 LCD & Oled variant handhelds but it's the Xbox 360 port of DDP-SDOJ running on the Switch indeed. Awesome to see it running at the arcade-spec 60fps framerate nevertheless.

I just tried DoDonpachi Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou (file: ddpsdoj.zip) in RetroArch FBNeo core and it reports a solid 60.26 fps for the whole time (played first three stages) and feels great in terms of input lag.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2026 4:25 pm Please do make a Youtube video of your Retroid Pocket Classic handheld with the Cave CV-1000 game of DoDonpachi Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou up and running on it -- that'd I like to see.
I don't have any MAME cores installed that will play it (understanding that SDOJ support was removed from MAME), they are not available in RetroArch's core downloads. But I may try to get it working with MAME if I can without too much fucking around, just for a comparison. Is it even worth trying with MAME or do most people just use FBNeo anyway? (not experienced in the realm of CV1000 emulation)
I will do a video soon and make a thread about the Retroid Pocket Classic, something I have been intending to do since I got it recently. It must be done!

I'm not a youtuber (you don't say!) but here's a bit of Retroid Pocket Classic usage..
Unfortunately this video is not showing how good the screen is. It's perfect. Zero blur, bold and bright colors etc (It's AMOLED). My phone camera is horribly over-exposing it and washing out the colors, sorry about that....

Thanks a lot for this video! The device is looking great. Maybe im asking for much but it will be great for me it you could tell me the active screen size while playing SDOJ on tate just to compare it with other option. Its looking very promising!Restart_Point wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2026 2:11 am .

Yeah the active area of screen for SDOJ (thus any tate shmups of same dimensions) using full available height is 6.5cm tall and 4.9cm wide
The RG Cube / RG Cube XX has a slightly taller active area at 7cm, but I think the superior resolution and general quality of the Retroid screen makes up for it

Re: Best handheld for tate shmups?
Finally got it and im really amazed, great little device. Took me a while to set up everything but now it is working good. Being able to use runahead and savestates with retroarch is super nice. The screen is great, i would have like that it will be sliiiightly bigger for tate, but i guess you cannot have everything.Restart_Point wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2026 11:54 am

Btw you know how to set up a X68000 emulator here? Because it will be great to play Cho Ren Sha in this squarish screen. The core from retroarch is not loading for some reason.

x68000 is working OK for me. Make sure you have placed the required 'keropi' folder for x68000 in the retroarch/system folder (the default BIOS files location)
